Canadian Passport Renewal From the USA: Forms, Fees, and Mailing

To handle a Canadian passport renewal from the USA, you mail a paper application to the Passport Program office in Gatineau, Quebec. Online renewal isn’t available to you because it requires a Canadian home and mailing address.1Government of Canada. Renew a Passport Online in Canada As of March 31, 2026, the fee from outside Canada is $266.25 CAD for a 10-year adult passport and $194.25 CAD for a 5-year passport.2Canada.ca. Passport and Travel Document Fee Changes Processing takes about 20 business days from the day the Passport Program receives your package, not counting international mail time in either direction, so plan for roughly six to eight weeks overall.

Which Form You Need

There are two routes: the simplified renewal (Form PPTC 054) and the general adult application. The simplified route is much lighter on paperwork, so check whether you qualify before doing anything else.

You can use the simplified renewal if all of these are true:

  • Your most recent passport was issued when you were at least 16 years old.
  • It was issued within the last 15 years.
  • It was valid for either five or ten years.
  • The name, date of birth, place of birth, and gender identifier on your new application match your previous passport exactly.

Since 2022, the simplified process also covers passports that were lost, stolen, or damaged, provided you still meet the criteria above.3Government of Canada. Canada Expands Simplified Renewal Process for Passports

If any of the criteria fail, or if your personal information has changed since your last passport, you have to use the general adult application. That path also applies to first-time adult applicants and requires proof of Canadian citizenship, a supporting identity document, and a guarantor.

What Goes in the Package

Simplified Renewal

The simplified package is short: the completed PPTC 054, your previous passport, two passport photos, your fee payment, and two references.4Government of Canada. Get the Form and Apply to Renew a Passport From the US You don’t need a guarantor, proof of citizenship, or supporting identity documents.3Government of Canada. Your two references must each be 18 or older, unrelated to you, and known to you for at least two years. They don’t sign anything. They just agree to be contacted by the Passport Program if identity verification is needed. Their contact information goes on the form.

General Application

The general application asks for more. Along with the form, photos, and payment, you’ll need:

Photos

Both forms require two identical, unaltered photos taken by a commercial photographer within the last six months.8Government of Canada. Passport Photo Requirements The Canadian specifications are 50 mm by 70 mm, with the face measuring 31 to 36 mm from chin to crown. Those dimensions differ from U.S. passport photos, so tell the photographer you need Canadian sizing.

On the back of one photo, the photographer must write or stamp the studio name, full address, and the date the photo was taken. Stick-on labels aren’t accepted.9Government of Canada. Passport Photo Specifications On the general application, your guarantor also signs the back of that same photo.

Finding a Guarantor While Living in the U.S.

This is the step that catches people. Your guarantor has to be a Canadian citizen, and years abroad can leave you without an obvious candidate. The guarantor doesn’t need to live in the U.S. or in Canada specifically — they can be anywhere — but they must physically sign your form and photo before you mail them.

If you genuinely can’t find a qualified guarantor, contact the Passport Program to request a Statutory Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor form. It isn’t available online. You obtain it through a Canadian embassy or consulate, or directly from the program.7Canada.ca. References and Guarantors for Canadian Passport and Other Travel Document Applications You then sign the declaration in front of someone qualified to administer an oath, such as a Canadian or British diplomatic or consular representative, or a local notary public.

Fees and How to Pay From the U.S.

Fees from outside Canada are higher than domestic rates because they include a consular services component. As of March 31, 2026:

  • 10-year adult passport: $266.25 CAD
  • 5-year adult passport: $194.25 CAD
  • Child passport (5-year only): $102.50 CAD

These are the total amounts, with nothing else to add unless you’re replacing a lost or stolen passport.2Canada.ca. Passport and Travel Document Fee Changes

Payment goes on the application form itself in the credit card section (Visa, MasterCard, or American Express), or by certified cheque or money order in Canadian funds made payable to the Receiver General for Canada.4Government of Canada. Get the Form and Apply to Renew a Passport From the US Personal cheques and cash aren’t accepted. From the U.S., credit card is the easiest option by far. Getting a certified cheque or money order in Canadian dollars from a U.S. bank is difficult, and USPS no longer sells international money orders.10USPS. Sending Money Internationally

Where to Mail the Package

Once the package is complete, mail everything to the Passport Program in Gatineau. The address depends on how you send it:11Government of Canada. Contact the Passport Program

  • Regular mail: Passport Program, Gatineau QC K1A 0G3, Canada
  • Courier: Passport Program, 22 de Varennes Street, Gatineau QC J8T 8R1, Canada

Use a trackable method. You’re sending originals — your previous passport, potentially a birth certificate — through international mail, and registered mail or a courier with tracking gives you a record of arrival. The new passport and all originals come back to you by mail when processing is done.

Processing Time and Status Checks

The service standard for applications mailed from the United States is 20 business days from the day the Passport Program receives your package. That figure excludes mailing time in both directions.12Government of Canada. Check Our Service Standards – Canadian Passports and Other Travel Documents Plan on six to eight weeks total once international postage is factored in.

You can track a mailed application through the Passport Program’s online status tool. Wait at least 10 business days after mailing before checking, so the package has time to arrive and get entered into the system.13Government of Canada. How to Check the Status of Your Passport Application Any problem with your file — missing documents, payment issues, photo rejection — will surface through this tool or by phone, and each correction adds another round of international mail.

If Your Passport Was Lost, Stolen, or Damaged

Report a lost or stolen valid passport immediately by calling 1-800-567-6868. The Passport Program cancels it right away, and that cancellation is permanent even if the passport later turns up.14Government of Canada. Lost, Stolen, Inaccessible, Damaged or Found Passports and Other Travel Documents

After reporting, check whether you still qualify for the simplified renewal. If you do, you can use PPTC 054. Whichever form you use, you must include Form PPTC 203, the Declaration Concerning a Lost, Stolen, Inaccessible, Damaged or Found Canadian Travel Document.

Replacing a lost or stolen valid passport costs the regular fee plus an additional $45 CAD.15Government of Canada. Pay Your Passport Fee – Canadians Outside Canada and the United States A damaged passport also requires the PPTC 203 but not the extra $45. If the lost, stolen, or damaged passport was already expired, skip the PPTC 203 and apply as a normal renewal or new application.14Government of Canada. Renewing a Child’s Passport

Children’s passports are only issued for five years and cost $102.50 CAD from outside Canada as of March 31, 2026.2Canada.ca. Passport and Travel Document Fee Changes A parent or legal guardian submits the application. Children can’t apply on their own.

Documentation is heavier than for an adult renewal:16Government of Canada. How to Apply for a Child Passport From the United States

  • Proof of Canadian citizenship: a long-form birth certificate from the province or territory where the child was born, or a citizenship certificate.
  • Proof of parentage or legal guardianship, with every application.
  • Consent of all parents or legal guardians. If one parent can’t sign, contact the Passport Program for instructions; they may reach out to the other parent directly.
  • Any court orders or agreements about custody, decision-making responsibilities, or mobility, including any clause about the child’s passport.
  • Two passport photos of the child, using the same specifications as adult photos.
  • Any existing travel document in the child’s name.

If a parent or legal guardian has died, include the original death certificate or an official copy from a provincial or territorial vital statistics office. A funeral home statement of death is not accepted. Any document in a language other than English or French needs an official translation.

When You Need It Faster Than 20 Business Days

The standard timeline doesn’t work if you have to travel within days. For urgent situations, contact the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate in the United States. Consular staff decide whether you qualify, and you’ll need to show proof of the need to travel: a plane ticket, an itinerary showing payment, evidence of a family illness or death, or a written explanation of why the passport is needed immediately.17Government of Canada. Get Urgent, Express or Emergency Weekend Passport Services

Two options are available through consulates:

  • Temporary passport ($110 CAD): for a proven urgent need in less than 20 business days when you’ve already applied and paid for a regular passport but haven’t received it. It bridges the gap until the permanent one arrives.
  • Emergency travel document ($75 CAD adult, $30 CAD child): a single-use, one-page document valid for a direct return to Canada, a return to your country of residence, or travel to a place with full passport services.18Government of Canada. Contact the consulate before paying either fee. These documents are issued only when the consulate agrees the situation warrants it.
