For most people, the Canada tax return deadline for the 2025 tax year is April 30, 2026, and any balance owing is due the same day.1Canada Revenue Agency. Filing Due Dates for the 2025 Tax Return Self-employed individuals and their spouses have until June 15, 2026, to file, but the payment itself is still due April 30. April 30, 2026, falls on a Thursday, so there is no automatic extension for the calendar this year.
April 30, 2026: The Standard Deadline
April 30 of the year after the tax year is the default deadline for employees, retirees, students, and anyone without self-employment income.1Canada Revenue Agency. Filing Due Dates for the 2025 Tax Return Both the return and any tax you owe are due that day.
When April 30 lands on a weekend or a federal public holiday, the CRA treats a return as on time if it is received or postmarked by the next business day. That relief does not apply to the 2025 return.
June 15, 2026: The Self-Employed Filing Deadline
If you or your spouse or common-law partner carried on a business in 2025, and the business expenditures were not mainly related to a tax shelter, your filing deadline is extended to June 15, 2026.1Canada Revenue Agency. Filing Due Dates for the 2025 Tax Return
Here is the part that catches people. The payment deadline does not move with the filing deadline. Any tax you owe is still due April 30, 2026. If your return is not finished by April 30, estimate your balance and pay it anyway. The CRA will not penalize you for filing on June 15, but interest starts running on any unpaid tax on May 1.
The same split applies to annual GST/HST returns for registrants with a December 31 fiscal year-end and business income: the return is due June 15, but net tax owing is due April 30.2Canada Revenue Agency. Reporting Requirements and Deadlines – File Your GST/HST Return If your fiscal year-end is not December 31, both the GST/HST return and the payment are due three months after your year-end.
Deadline for a Deceased Person’s Final Return
If you are the legal representative for someone who died in 2025, the deadline depends on when the death occurred. For a death between January 1 and October 31, the final return is due April 30, 2026. For a death between November 1 and December 31, you have six months from the date of death to file and pay.3Canada Revenue Agency. If the estate keeps earning income after death, a separate T3 Trust return may be required. That return is due 90 days after the trust’s tax year-end, which is March 31 for a December 31 year-end.4Canada Revenue Agency. Penalties for Filing Late
If you owe tax and miss your filing deadline, the CRA charges 5% of your unpaid balance right away, plus 1% for each full month the return stays outstanding, up to 12 months.5Department of Justice Canada. Income Tax Act – Section 162 On a $10,000 balance, that is $500 on day one, another $100 for every full month you do not file, and a maximum of $1,700 after a year.
Repeat late filers face a much steeper structure. If the CRA sent you a formal demand to file and you were already hit with a late-filing penalty in any of the three preceding years, the initial penalty doubles to 10% of your unpaid tax, plus 2% per complete month, up to 20 months.5Department of Justice Canada. Income Tax Act – Section 162 That works out to a possible 50% penalty on top of the tax itself.
These penalties only apply when you owe money. If the CRA owes you a refund, filing late carries no penalty, though it does delay your refund and any benefit payments that depend on the return.
Interest on Unpaid Tax
Interest is separate from the late-filing penalty and begins the day after the balance-due date. For most people, that is May 1. The interest compounds daily at a prescribed rate that the CRA sets each quarter.6Department of Justice Canada. Income Tax Act – Section 161 For the second quarter of 2026, the arrears rate is 7%.7Canada Revenue Agency. Interest Rates for the Second Calendar Quarter
Because interest runs on top of the late-filing penalty, the combined cost of ignoring a balance owing grows quickly. If you cannot pay in full by April 30, file on time anyway. Filing on time eliminates the 5% penalty and leaves you exposed only to interest.
If You Cannot Pay by the Deadline
The CRA lets you set up a payment arrangement to spread payments over time. You can schedule pre-authorized debits through My Account, or call the CRA to negotiate terms with an agent.8Government of Canada. Arrange to Pay Your Debt Over Time – Payments to the CRA Interest keeps accruing while you pay, but a formal arrangement keeps the CRA from starting collection action. You have to keep future returns filed on time while the arrangement is active, or the CRA can cancel it.
If you missed a deadline because of a serious illness, a natural disaster, or a CRA processing error, you can ask the CRA to cancel penalties and interest under the taxpayer relief provisions.9Canada Revenue Agency. Cancel or Waive Penalties and Interest at the CRA A request has to be made within 10 calendar years of the end of the tax year in question.10Canada Revenue Agency. Taxpayer Relief Provisions Processing currently takes up to 12 months for most cases, so this is not a quick fix.
Quarterly Installment Deadlines
Some people pay tax through the year rather than in one lump sum. If your net tax owing exceeded $3,000 in 2026 and in either 2025 or 2024, the CRA expects you to pay in quarterly installments.11Canada Revenue Agency. Required Tax Instalments for Individuals In Quebec, the threshold is $1,800. This commonly affects freelancers, landlords, and retirees with significant investment income.
The four installment dates are March 15, June 15, September 15, and December 15.12Canada Revenue Agency. They get far less attention than April 30, but they carry their own interest cost when skipped.
