You can submit the FAFSA late and still qualify for federal student aid, as long as your application reaches the Department of Education by 11:59 p.m. Central time on June 30, 2027, for the 2026–27 award year.1Federal Student Aid. FAFSA Application Deadlines The catch is that “eligible” and “funded” are not the same thing. Federal programs like the Pell Grant and Direct Loans stay open the whole window, but state grants and campus-based aid usually run out months earlier, and once that money is committed, filing late means going without it.
The Federal Window Is Long. Everything Else Is Short.
The 2026–27 FAFSA opened in late September 2025 and stays open until June 30, 2027, giving applicants roughly a 21-month filing window.1Federal Student Aid. FAFSA Application Deadlines Any submission the Department of Education receives before that cutoff keeps you eligible for federal programs including the Pell Grant and Direct Loans.2Federal Student Aid. 3 FAFSA Deadlines You Need To Know Now
State and school deadlines are a different story. Most state grant programs set priority filing dates in late winter or early spring, with many falling around March 1, and a large number of states operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Once the allocation is gone, late applicants get nothing from that program regardless of financial need. Colleges follow a similar pattern. Each school receives a fixed slice of campus-based federal aid every year and starts packaging awards shortly after its priority date. A student who files in January will typically see a very different offer than one who files in May, even when both qualify for the same programs on paper.
Your state’s deadline is listed on the FAFSA website, and your school’s financial aid office publishes its own priority date. Check both. They’re set independently.
What You Still Get If You File Late
The Pell Grant
The Pell Grant is an entitlement, meaning Congress funds every eligible applicant and the pool does not run dry. For 2026–27, the maximum award is $7,395.3Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 Federal Pell Grant Maximum and Minimum Award Amounts Your actual award depends on your Student Aid Index, enrollment intensity, and cost of attendance, not on your filing date. Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans
Direct Loans also stay available. These are not campus-based, so they don’t depend on your school’s limited allocation. First-year dependent undergraduates can borrow up to $5,500 per year, with no more than $3,500 in subsidized loans. Independent first-year students can borrow up to $9,500, with the same $3,500 subsidized cap.4Federal Student Aid. Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans Second-year limits rise to $6,500 for dependent students. Parents of dependent undergraduates can apply for Direct PLUS Loans once the FAFSA is processed.5Federal Student Aid. Federal Student Loans
What You Lose by Filing Late
Federal Work-Study and FSEOG
The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) and Federal Work-Study run on fixed congressional appropriations. For 2025–26, Congress set aside $910 million for FSEOG and $1.23 billion for Work-Study nationwide.6Federal Student Aid. 2025-26 Final Funding Authorizations for the Campus-Based Programs Each school gets a portion and awards it to early applicants first. Once a school commits its share, late filers are shut out of these programs even while the federal FAFSA window remains open.
State Grants
State-funded grant programs generally tie eligibility to early FAFSA filing. States with the largest need-based tuition assistance programs routinely exhaust their budgets within weeks of their priority dates, and filing after that usually means losing access to the most substantial non-federal grant money on the table. Some states and schools continue making awards to latecomers, but the odds get much slimmer and the amounts tend to be lower.2Federal Student Aid. 3 FAFSA Deadlines You Need To Know Now
Pell and Direct Loans are protected. State grants and campus-based aid are not. For a student who otherwise would have qualified, that gap can easily mean several thousand dollars less in the final aid package.
How to File Late
The process is the same whether you’re early or late. Complete the application at studentaid.gov, where every contributor — you and, if you’re a dependent student, your parent — provides information and signs electronically using an FSA ID.7FSA Partners. Chapter 1 The Application Process – FAFSA to ISIR The Federal Processing System calculates your Student Aid Index and sends it to every school you listed. Electronic submissions are usually processed within one to three days.
After you submit, call your school’s financial aid office. Don’t wait for them to reach out. A short conversation lets them flag your application and tells you what funding is still available. Aid officers work with late filers every cycle, and a direct question about remaining funds is more useful than hoping for the best.
Asking for an Exception
If you missed a state or school priority deadline because of a family emergency, sudden income loss, or a health crisis, you may not be locked out. Financial aid administrators have authority under Section 479A of the Higher Education Act to exercise “professional judgment,” which lets them adjust your financial data or cost of attendance case by case.8Federal Student Aid. Update on the Use of Professional Judgment by Financial Aid Administrators
Professional judgment won’t move a federal deadline, but it can matter in real ways. An aid officer might adjust your Student Aid Index to reflect a recent income drop, increase your cost of attendance for disability-related or childcare expenses, or reconsider you for institutional aid that was nominally closed. Send the request in writing with supporting documentation such as pay stubs, termination letters, or medical records. Processing takes several weeks, and approval is never guaranteed.
A separate process, called a dependency override, exists for dependent students who can’t obtain parental information because of abuse, abandonment, or severe estrangement. It has its own documentation requirements and school-specific deadlines, with reviews often taking four to five weeks. Start that conversation early. Waiting until the last month of the semester leaves almost no room for the request to be processed before aid deadlines pass.
Fixing Errors After You File
If you filed on time but need to correct or update information, you have extra time. For the 2026–27 cycle, corrections and updates must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. Central time on September 12, 2027.1Federal Student Aid. FAFSA Application Deadlines A job loss, divorce, or medical emergency after your original submission may require an update. Corrections submitted before that deadline are reprocessed, and your school can adjust your aid package based on the new Student Aid Index. Don’t assume mistakes will sort themselves out. Incorrect data can reduce your aid or trigger verification delays that hold up the entire package.
