Yes, you can still tax a car at the Post Office. Participating branches across the UK continue to process Vehicle Excise Duty, and for a couple of transactions, like switching a vehicle’s tax class to or from “disabled,” the Post Office is the only route.1GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle If you turn up with the right paperwork, it takes a few minutes.
What to Bring
The counter clerk needs a document that ties you to the vehicle and carries a reference number. Bring one of these:1GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle
- Your V5C registration certificate (the logbook), in your name.
- The V5C/2 new keeper slip, the green section from the logbook, if you’ve just bought the car and the full V5C hasn’t come through yet.
- The V11 reminder letter DVLA posts before your tax expires.
No paperwork at all? You can fill in a V62 at the branch to apply for a replacement logbook and tax the car in the same visit. The replacement costs £25.2Post Office. Buy or Renew Your Vehicle Tax
You may also be asked about MOT. The clerk can usually check it electronically, but GOV.UK suggests bringing the certificate or a screenshot of the MOT history as a backup. A fresh pass can take up to two days to show in the system, so don’t go straight from the test centre to the Post Office.1GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle

Finding a Branch That Does Vehicle Tax
Not every branch offers the service. Smaller sub-offices handling mail and retail may not have the systems for it. Before you set off, use the branch finder at postoffice.co.uk and confirm “Vehicle Tax” appears in the list of services for that location.4Post Office. At the Counter
Hand over your documents. The clerk scans or types the reference from your V11, V5C, or new keeper slip and pulls up the vehicle on the DVLA system. You choose six or twelve months, confirm the details, and pay. You walk out with a printed receipt. There’s no tax disc anymore; DVLA updates the vehicle’s status digitally, almost immediately.
One thing that trips up new buyers: the previous owner’s tax does not transfer. DVLA refunds them for the full months remaining, and the car is untaxed the moment you take ownership.5GOV.UK. Cancel Your Vehicle Tax and Get a Refund You need to tax it before you drive it away.
What It Costs
For most petrol, diesel, and electric cars registered on or after 1 April 2017, the standard annual rate is £200. Six months costs £110, so you pay a £10 premium for splitting the year. A Direct Debit set up at the branch brings the six-month figure down to £105, and monthly instalments come to £210 across the year.6GOV.UK. V149 Rates of Vehicle Tax April 2026
Cars registered before 1 April 2017 sit under the older engine-size bands: £230 a year up to 1,549cc, £375 above that.6GOV.UK. V149 Rates of Vehicle Tax April 2026 The six-month and Direct Debit options apply the same way.
Electric cars are no longer free to tax. Since 1 April 2025, zero-emission cars registered on or after that date pay the same £200 standard rate as petrol and diesel.7GOV.UK. Vehicles Exempt From Vehicle Tax
The figures above are the standard flat rate that kicks in after a car’s first year on the road. First-year rates depend on CO2 emissions and can be considerably higher on high-emission vehicles. Cash and debit cards are both accepted for one-off payments at the counter.
Vehicles That Tax at £0
Some vehicles are exempt but still have to go through the taxing process. Historic vehicles (anything manufactured before 1 January 1986) and cars taxed in the “disabled” class are the two most common exemptions a Post Office visit will involve.7GOV.UK. Vehicles Exempt From Vehicle Tax Changing your tax class to or from “disabled” has to be done at a Post Office; you can’t do it online.
Northern Ireland: Two Extra Documents
Taxing a vehicle at a Post Office in Northern Ireland requires two things you don’t need elsewhere in the UK: a paper insurance certificate or cover note, and an original MOT test certificate or evidence of a Temporary Exemption Certificate.1GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle The branch needs the physical originals; digital copies will be turned away. England, Scotland, and Wales check insurance through separate enforcement systems, so the paper isn’t required there.
Post Office or Online?
The Post Office isn’t the only option. You can tax a vehicle at gov.uk/vehicle-tax using the reference number from your V11, V5C, or new keeper slip, any hour of the day, and it processes instantly.1GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle For a straightforward renewal, that’s usually faster.
The Post Office still makes sense in specific cases: when you need a replacement V5C at the same time, when you’re changing the tax class to “disabled,” when you’d rather pay in cash, or when you want a person to check your paperwork before it’s submitted. And in Northern Ireland, where the physical insurance and MOT documents are required, it’s the only in-person route.
