Before 2016, you could pay to have a 24-page insert sewn into your existing book. That option is gone. Even if your current passport hasn’t expired, a full or nearly full book means a new application.
Ask for the 52-Page Book
This is the single most useful thing to know before you apply. If you travel internationally more than a couple of times a year, the larger book is the obvious pick. Some countries use a full page for a visa sticker, and entry and exit stamps from a single trip can burn through two or three pages on their own.
How Many Blank Pages Do You Actually Need
Don’t wait until the book is completely full. Most countries require at least one blank page for entry and exit stamps, and many destinations across Africa, Asia, and Europe require two or more. Airlines have been known to refuse boarding when a passport doesn’t meet the destination’s blank-page rule. Before any trip, count your remaining blank pages and check the entry requirements for every country on the itinerary.

To qualify, you must be 25 or older, holding a 10-year passport that is either expiring within a year or expired less than five years ago, not changing your name or other personal information, physically located in a U.S. state or territory, and not traveling internationally for at least six weeks. Renewal by Mail With Form DS-82
Mail renewal is available if your most recent passport is undamaged, was issued when you were 16 or older, was issued within the last 15 years, has not been reported lost or stolen, and was issued in your current name (or you can document a legal name change). If you don’t meet the mail or online criteria, you’ll apply in person at a passport acceptance facility, typically a post office, public library, or county clerk’s office. Routine processing runs four to six weeks. Expedited runs two to three weeks. What Happens to Valid Visas in the Old Book
A valid visa in your old passport doesn’t disappear when you get a new book. Many countries let you travel with both passports at the border, using the visa in the old one alongside the new one. The United States follows this practice for foreign visitors: a valid U.S. visa in an expired passport remains usable if the traveler presents both books together. When a Second Passport Book Makes Sense
Frequent travelers can also hold two valid U.S. passport books at the same time.
