Yes, you can send a package with stamps. USPS accepts any U.S. stamp issued since 1860 as valid postage on any class of mail, packages included, as long as the total face value of the stamps meets or exceeds what the shipment costs.1Postal Explorer. Domestic Mail Manual 604 Postage Payment Methods and Refunds The catch is practical rather than legal: a $15 package needs roughly 20 Forever stamps stuck to it, and any stamped package over a certain size has to be handed to a clerk at the counter rather than dropped in a mailbox.
Which Stamps Count and Which Don’t
Mix and match freely. Forever stamps, older commemoratives sitting in a drawer, and high-denomination stamps all count toward postage, and you can combine them however you like as long as the total covers the price.1Postal Explorer. Domestic Mail Manual 604 Postage Payment Methods and Refunds
A few things won’t work: postage-due stamps, special delivery stamps, old Certified Mail stamps, stamps issued by other countries, and United Nations stamps (unless the piece is being mailed from the UN in New York).1Postal Explorer. Domestic Mail Manual 604 Postage Payment Methods and Refunds
The Size Rule That Sends You to the Counter
If a stamped package weighs more than 10 ounces or is thicker than half an inch, you cannot leave it in a blue collection box and you cannot hand it to your mail carrier. It has to go to a Post Office counter and be given to an employee.2USPS. How to Send a Letter or Postcard: Domestic
Almost every package clears one of those thresholds. Plan on a trip to the Post Office for anything but the smallest, thinnest parcel.
Figuring Out How Much Postage the Package Needs
The price depends on weight, dimensions, the destination ZIP code, and which mail class you pick. Weigh and measure before you start applying stamps. Underpaying means the package either comes back to you or arrives with postage due for the recipient.
The USPS retail price calculator gives you an exact number once you enter origin ZIP, destination ZIP, weight, and dimensions.3USPS. Retail Postage Price Calculator Two details worth knowing before you calculate:
- Some services round weight up to the next ounce, others to the next pound. Priority Mail rounds to the pound, so a 5-pound, 2-ounce package is charged at the 6-pound rate.4USPS. How to Prepare and Send a Package
- Domestic packages max out at 70 pounds and 108 inches of combined length and girth. USPS Ground Advantage stretches the dimension limit to 130 inches, though anything over 108 inches gets an oversized surcharge.5USPS. Parcel Size, Weight and Fee Standards
How Many Forever Stamps You Actually Need
A Forever stamp is worth $0.78 as of January 2026.6Postal Explorer. Notice 123 Price List Effective January 18, 2026 USPS Ground Advantage starts at $7.30 at the counter, so the cheapest package takes at least 10 Forever stamps.7USPS. USPS Ground Advantage A heavier or longer-distance shipment running $15 to $25 could need 20 to 33 stamps. That is a lot of surface area on a box.
USPS also sells single high-denomination stamps designed for packages. A Priority Mail stamp is $47.80 and a Priority Mail Express stamp is $133.00.8USPS. The Postal Store – Stamps These pair well with flat-rate shipments and keep the box from being covered in dozens of small stamps.
Where the Stamps Go
Stamps belong in the upper-right corner of the package, the same position they’d occupy on a letter.4USPS. The address itself should run parallel to the longest side of the box.9Postal Explorer. Preparing Packages
Which Services Stamps Work For
Stamps are valid on any domestic mail class. For packages, three services matter most:
- USPS Ground Advantage handles packages up to 70 pounds, starts at $7.30 at retail, delivers in two to five business days, and includes free tracking.7USPS. USPS Ground Advantage
- Priority Mail delivers in one to three business days with tracking and up to $100 of insurance included. The flat-rate envelope is $11.95.6Postal Explorer. Notice 123 Price List Effective January 18, 2026
- Priority Mail Express is the fastest, offering overnight to two-day delivery. Its flat-rate envelope is $33.25.6Postal Explorer. Notice 123 Price List Effective January 18, 2026
All three include USPS Tracking at no extra charge.10USPS. Mail and Shipping Services
The Tracking Problem With Stamped Packages
Tracking is a real limitation worth understanding before you commit to stamps. Ground Advantage and Priority Mail both include tracking in theory, but a tracking number is generated when a shipping label is created, either online or by a clerk at the counter. A box with only stamps on it has no barcode and no tracking number attached to it.
The way to get tracking on a stamped package is to bring it to the counter. The clerk weighs it, confirms the stamps cover the correct service, and generates a tracking receipt. If you skip the counter and drop a stamped package in a collection box (assuming it fits under the 10-ounce, half-inch rules), you have no way to confirm delivery.
For anything valuable or time-sensitive, this is the strongest argument for printing a shipping label online instead. A printed label includes the tracking barcode automatically.
Where to Drop It Off
Options depend on size:
- Blue collection boxes and handoff to your carrier: only for stamped packages weighing 10 ounces or less and no thicker than half an inch. Very few packages qualify.2USPS. How to Send a Letter or Postcard: Domestic
- Post Office counter: required for anything heavier or thicker, and the right choice if you want a receipt, tracking, or a clerk to verify your postage.
- Free package pickup: USPS will pick up packages from your home or office during regular mail delivery at no charge. Schedule online at least a day in advance, and check eligibility when you do.11USPS. Package Pickup and Pickup on Demand12USPS. Schedule a Pickup
When It’s Better to Print Postage Online
Stamps work, but for most packages, printing a label through USPS Click-N-Ship is cheaper and easier. You get commercial pricing (lower than counter retail), a tracking number built into the label, and no arithmetic about how many stamps to combine.13USPS. Online Shipping with Click-N-Ship Labels are available for Ground Advantage, Priority Mail, and Priority Mail Express.
You need a free USPS.com account and a printer. Tape the printed label to the box and either drop it at the Post Office or schedule a free pickup. If you don’t have a printer, the Label Broker service lets you buy a label online and print it at a Post Office kiosk using an ID code, and Label Delivery mails a physical label to you for $1.65.13USPS. Stamps still make sense in a few situations: you have a stash you want to use up, the package is small and light, or you don’t have internet access. Otherwise, online postage is usually the better call.
Using Stamps on International Packages
Stamps are valid on international packages, but there is extra paperwork. Nearly every international package needs a customs form declaring contents, value, and weight, and all customs forms have to be computer-generated. Handwritten forms are not accepted.14USPS. How to Send a Package: International
Since paying with stamps means paying at the counter, you have two ways to handle the customs form. Print it in advance through the USPS Customs Form Online tool and bring it to the Post Office, or fill out Form PS 2976-R at the counter and let the clerk generate the printed version.14USPS.
