Can You Rescind an Offer on eBay: Bids, Best Offers, and Deadlines

You can rescind an offer on eBay in some situations, but the platform treats bids and offers as binding commitments by default, and the openings to take one back are narrow and time-limited. What you can do depends on whether you placed an auction bid, submitted a Best Offer, or already won the item.

Retracting an Auction Bid

In most categories, placing a bid creates a contract to buy if you win, and eBay will only accept a retraction for one of two reasons.1eBay. All About Bidding The first is a typo on the amount. If you meant to bid $9.95 and entered $99.50, you can pull the bid back, but you have to immediately place a corrected bid on the same listing.2eBay. Invalid Bid Retraction Policy The second is a material change to the item description after you bid, such as the seller disclosing damage, missing parts, or a change in condition.

Anything else is an invalid reason. Changing your mind, finding the item cheaper elsewhere, or being unable to reach the seller do not qualify.

Timing matters as much as the reason. With more than 12 hours left in the auction, you can retract any of your bids as long as you have a valid reason.3eBay. Retracting a Bid Inside the final 12 hours, the rules tighten sharply: you can only retract your most recent bid, and only if you placed it within the last hour. Earlier bids are locked. This is where most buyers get caught, because by the time an auction turns competitive, the window has usually already shut.

How to Submit the Retraction

eBay handles retractions through a Bid Retraction form in the Help & Contact section of the website. You find the listing, pick a recognized reason, and submit. The process runs on the site rather than the mobile app.3eBay. Retracting a Bid

Retractions stay on your record. Frequent or unjustified ones can lead to buying restrictions, and using retractions to manipulate auction prices is treated as a serious policy violation that can end in suspension.

Withdrawing a Best Offer

Best Offers on fixed-price listings run on separate rules. You can pull an offer back only if all three of these are true: the listing has more than 12 hours remaining, you submitted the offer less than one hour ago, and the seller has not yet accepted, declined, or countered.4eBay. Making a Best Offer

The counteroffer condition is the one people miss. The moment a seller sends a counteroffer, your original offer is locked. You can decline the counter, but you cannot retract what you submitted. If the seller does nothing, the offer expires on its own after 24 hours.

Canceling After You Win

If the auction has already ended or you clicked Buy It Now, eBay gives you a one-hour cancellation window. On the US site, buyers have one hour from the moment they commit to submit a cancellation request from their Purchase History page. After that, you cannot cancel yourself and have to ask the seller.

Even inside that hour, the seller still has to approve the request. It is a request, not an automatic exit. Most sellers will agree if the item has not shipped, since pushing an unwilling buyer through checkout tends to end in a return or a dispute anyway.

If You Cannot Get Out of the Purchase

If you cannot retract, cancel, or persuade the seller, eBay expects payment within four calendar days.5eBay. Unpaid Item Policy Miss that window and the seller can cancel the order, which logs an unpaid cancellation on your account. Enough of those and eBay will impose buying limits or suspend the account.

A single missed payment is unlikely to end your buying privileges, but the platform treats a pattern of non-payment as abuse. The cleaner move, before it gets to that point, is to message the seller, explain the situation, and ask them to cancel from their side.

Real Estate and Vehicle Bids Are Different

One boundary worth knowing: bids in the Real Estate category and on vehicles in eBay Motors are non-binding.6eBay. Non-Binding Bid Policy A winning bid in those categories signals serious interest but does not create a purchase contract, so the retraction rules above do not govern your ability to walk away. Everything else on the platform is treated as a binding commitment from the moment you bid.
