Can You Rent a Car After Age 75? Discounts, Insurance, and Limits

Renting a car after 75 is legal, available, and usually straightforward in the United States. No major U.S. rental company sets an upper age limit, and no federal or state law prevents an older driver from picking up a rental. If you hold a valid driver’s license and a credit card in your name, you can walk up to the counter at any age and drive away. The complications, when they come, are smaller and more specific: keeping your license current, understanding how your insurance actually applies, and knowing that the rules shift once you cross an international border.

No Upper Age Limit at U.S. Rental Counters

U.S. rental law regulates the minimum age to rent, not the maximum. Most companies set their floor at 20 or 21, and some charge young-driver surcharges to renters under 25. There is no mirror rule for older drivers. No federal statute and no state statute bars a rental company from handing keys to someone over 75, 85, or 95.

The major brands confirm this in their own policies. SIXT states that drivers who meet the minimum age and standard rental requirements can reserve any available vehicle category with no upper age restriction and no additional fees for drivers over 70.1SIXT rent a car. Vehicle class matters no more than counter age. A 78-year-old can rent a luxury sedan or a full-size SUV under the same terms as any other adult renter, as long as the standard requirements are met.1SIXT rent a car. Senior Discounts Worth Asking About

Older renters are more likely to see a discount than a surcharge. Several major companies run senior-specific programs.

  • The Avis AARP partnership offers up to 30% off base rates, a free one-class upgrade when available, a waived additional-driver fee, and damage liability capped at $5,000 even without buying a Loss Damage Waiver.5Avis Rent a Car. Up to 35% Off Base Rates for AARP Members
  • Budget, Dollar, Thrifty, and Fox advertise senior discount programs that typically start at age 50.

The Avis AARP arrangement is worth a close look. Keep Your License Current Before You Book

The most common practical barrier to renting after 75 has nothing to do with the rental company. It is your driver’s license. Every counter checks that your license is valid and unexpired, and many states make renewal harder as you age. If your license has lapsed or you missed a required vision test, no argument at the counter will fix it.

More than 20 states impose tighter renewal requirements once a driver reaches a certain age. Common patterns include shorter renewal cycles, mandatory vision testing, and a prohibition on renewing online or by mail.6IIHS. Older Drivers – License Renewal Procedures A few examples that hit around age 75:

  • Indiana shortens the renewal cycle to three years at 75 and two years at 85, with a vision test at every renewal.
  • Massachusetts requires a vision test at every renewal starting at 75 and removes the online renewal option.
  • New Mexico drops the renewal cycle to one year at 79 and requires a vision test starting at 75.
  • Illinois, starting July 2026, requires drivers 79 and older to take a vision test at each renewal and blocks online renewal. At 87, a driver must demonstrate the ability to operate a vehicle safely.

The fees themselves are modest, generally $10 to $80 depending on the state. The inconvenience is the bigger issue. If your state requires an in-person visit with a vision test, plan the renewal well before any trip. An expired license is not a problem the airport counter can solve.

How Insurance Actually Works for Older Renters

Insurance is where renting after 75 gets genuinely complicated. Three layers of coverage potentially apply, and each has its own age-related fine print.

Your personal auto insurance often extends to rental cars, but terms vary by insurer. Some policies reduce coverage or exclude certain benefits for drivers over a specific age. Before you rent, call your auto insurer and ask directly whether your policy covers rental car damage and liability for a driver your age.

Credit cards with rental car collision damage waivers are another common safety net, and they also carry age-related or geographic restrictions in the benefit guide. Read your specific card’s terms before relying on it. If the card excludes drivers over a certain age or limits coverage to certain countries, you need that information before declining the counter insurance.

The rental company’s own products, including the Loss Damage Waiver, Supplemental Liability Insurance, and Personal Accident Insurance, have no age restrictions at U.S. locations. They cost more than leaning on your own coverage. They also provide a clean fallback if the other two layers have gaps. For a renter over 75 whose personal policy or card benefit has age-related exclusions, the Loss Damage Waiver at $15 to $35 per day may be the safer choice.

Medicare fits into this picture only for medical costs. Medicare covers your own medical expenses after a car accident and can act as a secondary payer when auto insurance is the primary payer, filling gaps your car insurance does not cover. It does not cover damage to the rental vehicle or liability for injuries you cause to others.

International Rentals Are Where Age Actually Matters

Outside the United States, age becomes a real barrier. Many countries, or the rental companies operating within them, impose firm upper age limits that often land right around 75.

Countries With Upper Age Caps

Ireland is the trouble spot Americans hit most often. Alamo caps rental eligibility there at 70. Avis and Europcar cut off at 74. Budget, Hertz, and SIXT cap at 75. Documents You May Need Abroad

Beyond your license and credit card, an international rental may require extra paperwork. Many countries require or strongly recommend an International Driving Permit, which is a standardized translation of your U.S. license. Only two organizations are authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue them: the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA).10USAGov. International Driver’s License for U.S. Citizens Some countries or companies also require a doctor’s letter confirming you are fit to drive, most often when the company is allowing a rental above its standard age limit as an exception.

The single most useful step before any international rental after 75 is calling the company’s international reservation line before booking. Online booking systems often do not flag age limits until you arrive at the counter, and finding out you cannot rent after a transatlantic flight is a bad way to start a trip. Ask specifically about the age limit at your exact pickup location, the documentation you need, and whether insurance coverage changes based on your age. A short phone call eliminates the worst surprises.
