You can pay off an Affirm loan early at any time, and Affirm charges no prepayment penalty and no fees for doing so.1Affirm Help Center. How Affirm Works If your plan carries interest, paying early lowers what you owe, because Affirm calculates simple interest daily on the outstanding principal.2Affirm Help Center. How Interest Works You can settle the full balance in one payment or just pay more than the scheduled amount whenever you want.
No Penalties, No Fees, Any Plan
Affirm does not charge late fees, prepayment fees, annual fees, or fees to open or close an account.1Affirm Help Center. How Affirm Works Every extra dollar you send above the scheduled payment goes straight to your remaining plan balance. Depending on how much you pay, you’ll see fewer remaining payments, a smaller final payment, or both.3Affirm Help Center. Payments Overview
This applies across every plan type Affirm offers, from biweekly Pay-in-4 through longer-term plans of up to 48 months on larger purchases.4Affirm Help Center. Term Lengths
How Paying Early Saves You Money
Affirm uses simple interest, so interest accrues only on the outstanding principal and never on previously accrued interest.2Affirm Help Center. How Interest Works When you shrink the principal ahead of schedule, less interest builds on that portion for the rest of the term. Pay the loan off entirely and interest stops accruing that day.
That’s different from a credit card, where interest compounds on interest and balances grow faster the longer they sit. With Affirm, every dollar above the minimum lowers the total cost of the loan directly.
What About 0% APR Plans?
Many Affirm plans, especially shorter ones offered by specific merchants, carry 0% APR. There is no interest to save on those, so paying early won’t reduce your total cost. What it does is close the obligation sooner and cut the number of remaining payments, or shrink the last one.3Affirm Help Center. Payments Overview
How to Make the Early Payment
You can pay through the Affirm app or at affirm.com any time. The path is the same either way:3Affirm Help Center. Payments Overview
- Sign in to your account.
- Open the Manage section.
- Select the loan you want to pay off or pay down.
- Choose Make a payment.
- Pick an amount: the scheduled payment, the full remaining plan balance, or a custom amount above the minimum.
- Choose your payment method and date, then confirm.
If your goal is to close the loan, choose the option to pay off the full plan balance rather than typing in a number yourself. That covers the exact payoff figure including any interest accrued through that date, so you don’t leave a few cents behind.
Which Payment Methods Work
Affirm accepts debit cards and linked checking accounts for repayments. Credit cards can be used for down payments, one-time payments, and autopay on eligible plans, but they cannot be used on interest-bearing plans, and some credit card issuers block their cards from Affirm repayments entirely.5Affirm Help Center. Payment Methods Confirm your linked account has enough available before you submit a large payoff.
What Happens to Autopay
You don’t need to turn autopay off before paying early. If your manual payment covers the full amount due for that cycle, Affirm won’t run the autopay debit. If it only covers part of it, autopay pulls the remainder on the due date.6Affirm Help Center. Managing AutoPay Once the loan balance hits zero, there’s nothing left for autopay to draw.
When the Payment Actually Clears
Payments can take 3 to 5 business days to finish processing, depending on your bank and payment method.3Affirm Help Center. Payments Overview The payment may show as pending in the meantime. If you submitted on or before the due date, Affirm treats it as on time even if processing wraps up later. To confirm a full payoff, check back in the app after that window.
One Catch on Refunds After an Early Payoff
If you pay off a loan and the merchant later issues a refund, Affirm returns the principal portion you paid to your original payment method within 3 to 10 business days. Interest you already paid is not refundable.7Affirm Help Center. How Refunds Work So on an interest-bearing plan, paying off in full and then returning the item means you’ll get the principal back but not the finance charges. It’s worth weighing that timing if a return is a real possibility.
