Can You Go to Any Social Security Office to Change Your Name?

Yes. You can go to any Social Security office in the country to change your name, not only the one closest to where you live. The instructions on Form SS-5 say you can take or mail your signed application and documents to any Social Security office.¹ In-person visits now require an appointment, and depending on your state you may be able to handle the whole thing online without visiting an office at all.² The change is free, and your Social Security number stays the same.

Check the Online Option Before You Pick an Office

Some applicants can complete a Social Security name change entirely through a my Social Security account. Others can start online and then bring their documents to a local office or Card Center within 45 calendar days to finish.² Which path you get depends on your state and situation. Answer the screening questions on the SSA’s card request page to find out where you land before you plan an office trip.³

If the tool tells you the online route isn’t available, you’ll need to visit an office or mail your application.

Going to Any Office in Person

Because you’re not tied to a home office, the practical question is which office is easiest for you. The SSA’s office locator on ssa.gov searches by zip code and will show any location, so a less busy office one town over is fair game if your local one has long waits, and a location near work or where you’re traveling is fine too.

Call ahead or self-schedule online. The SSA now expects an appointment for in-person service, and walking in without one risks being turned away or waiting far longer than necessary.⁴ Some offices let you book the appointment yourself online.³

At the appointment, a representative reviews your Form SS-5 and documents on the spot. Originals are typically handed back to you once verification is done.⁵

Mailing to Any Office Instead

If you’d rather not go in person, you can mail the completed Form SS-5 with your original or certified documents to any Social Security office, and the SSA will return your documents by mail after processing.¹

The tradeoff is time and comfort. Mailed applications can take two to four weeks to process, longer than in-person or online submissions.⁶ Many people are reluctant to put an original birth certificate or passport in the mail. Certified mail with return receipt at least gives you proof of delivery.

What to Bring or Send

Wherever you apply, the SSA needs proof of identity, proof of the legal name change, and, in some cases, proof of citizenship. Everything must be an original or a certified copy from the issuing agency. Photocopies and notarized copies won’t be accepted.⁵

Proof of Identity

A current, unexpired U.S. driver’s license, state-issued non-driver ID card, or U.S. passport. It should show your name, date of birth, and ideally a recent photograph.⁵

Proof of the Legal Name Change

You need a document that shows both your old and new names:

A marriage certificate, obtained from the vital records office in the state where you were married.⁷
A divorce decree from the clerk of the county or city where you were divorced.⁸
A certified court order, if you changed your name by petition, from the court clerk who issued it.⁹

The name you put on Form SS-5 has to match this document exactly. A discrepancy will slow things down.¹

Proof of Citizenship, If Not Already on File

If the SSA doesn’t already have your U.S. citizenship on record, include a U.S. birth certificate or U.S. passport. Most people who received a Social Security number at birth in the U.S. already have this on file, so it usually applies only where records are incomplete.⁵

Non-citizens have to show current U.S. immigration documents instead, such as a Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551), Employment Authorization Document (Form I-766), or Arrival/Departure Record (Form I-94) with an unexpired foreign passport. F-1 and M-1 students also provide Form I-20; J-1 and J-2 exchange visitors provide the DS-2019.⁵

Cost, Timing, and Your SSN

There is no fee for a Social Security name change or the new card.¹⁰ After the SSA processes your application, the new card arrives by mail in 5 to 10 business days.¹¹ If you mailed the application, add the SSA’s intake and review time on top, bringing the total to roughly two to four weeks.⁶

Your Social Security number does not change. Only the name attached to it is updated. And a name-change card doesn’t count against the SSA’s replacement limits of three per year and ten per lifetime, so there’s no reason to hold off on the update.¹²

Update the SSA Before Filing Taxes

The IRS matches the name and Social Security number on your return against SSA records. File under a new name the SSA doesn’t yet have on file and the mismatch can delay a refund or cause an e-filed return to be rejected. If tax season arrives before your SSA update is done, file using whatever name the SSA currently has on file for you, and use the new name on next year’s return once the change is complete.¹³
