Can You Get Your Tax Refund Early? Advances and Free Options

The fastest free way of getting your tax refund early is to file electronically and choose direct deposit; most people who do that see the money within 21 days of the IRS accepting the return.1Internal Revenue Service. Why It May Take Longer Than 21 Days for Some Taxpayers to Receive Their Federal Refund If you need cash sooner, tax preparation companies partner with banks to offer refund advance loans that can pay out within a day or two of filing, sometimes at 0% APR and sometimes at rates north of 35%. The Free Route: E-File With Direct Deposit

The 21-day clock starts when the IRS accepts your return, not when you hit submit in your tax software. Paper returns are much slower; the IRS won’t even begin researching a paper return’s status until at least six weeks after you mail it.3Internal Revenue Service. Processing Status for Tax Forms Direct deposit removes the mail time on the back end, and you can split your refund across up to three accounts if you want.

Filing in late January or early February, before the March and April volume, gives you the best shot at landing inside that three-week window. If your only reason for considering an advance is a bill due in a few weeks, direct deposit alone will often solve the problem without a loan.

One Boundary: EITC and ACTC Filers Wait Until Mid-February

If your return claims the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, federal law blocks the IRS from releasing your refund before February 15, regardless of how early you file. Under 26 U.S.C. § 6402(m), added by the PATH Act of 2015, no refund on a return claiming these credits can be issued before the 15th day of the second month after the tax year closes.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6402 – Authority to Make Credits or Refunds The hold applies to the whole refund, not just the credit portion.5Internal Revenue Service. What a Refund Advance Actually Is

A refund advance is a short-term loan from a private lender, not from the IRS. Tax preparation companies partner with banks to let you borrow against the refund you’re projected to receive, and approved funds usually land on a prepaid debit card or in a temporary bank account within a day or two of filing. Advance amounts typically range from $250 to $4,000 depending on the provider and the size of your expected refund.

Repayment happens automatically. When the IRS processes your return, it sends the actual refund to the lender’s bank, which deducts the loan balance and any fees before forwarding the rest to you.7Internal Revenue Service. How Approval Works

Approval turns on your expected refund amount more than on your credit score. Most refund advance providers run only a soft credit inquiry, which does not affect your credit. The lender checks that your return has been filed, that your projected refund clears their minimum threshold, and that the return looks internally consistent. If your income figures or dependent claims don’t match what employers and financial institutions reported to the IRS, the advance will be denied.

What It Costs

The sticker rates vary wildly. Some providers offer refund advances at 0% APR with no loan fees, which makes them effectively free if everything goes as planned. Others charge interest. At least one major preparation chain charges 35.99% APR on its advances, which works out to roughly $12 to $83 in finance charges depending on the loan size. Read the loan agreement carefully; the cost gap between providers is unusually large for a consumer credit product.

The bigger cost is often indirect. To qualify for a 0% advance, you usually have to file your return through a specific preparer or software platform, and that platform may charge $150 to $300 for preparation. If you would otherwise qualify for free filing, the “free” advance quietly cost you the preparation fee. Some providers also add a refund transfer fee, sometimes called a Refund Anticipation Check or RAC fee, of $30 to $50 if you use the refund itself to pay for preparation.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Happens If Your Refund Comes In Smaller

The biggest risk is a shrunken refund. The IRS might reduce yours because of a math error, a disallowed credit, or an offset for past-due debts like child support or student loans. If that leaves less than the advance amount, you still owe the lender the full loan plus any fees. The IRS cannot pull funds back once they’ve been deposited, so any dispute between you and the lender becomes a civil matter you have to work out yourself.7Internal Revenue Service. How to Apply

The application is built into the filing process rather than being a separate step. When you prepare your return through a participating tax software program, or walk into a preparation office that offers advances, the option appears after your return is complete. You’ll need the standard filing documents:

  • W-2 forms from every employer you worked for during the year
  • 1099 forms reporting other income such as freelance pay, interest, dividends, retirement distributions, or government payments10Internal Revenue Service. Gather Your Documents
  • Government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport
  • Social Security numbers for yourself, your spouse if filing jointly, and every dependent on the return11Internal Revenue Service. Dependents 9

Once the software calculates your estimated refund, that figure sets how much you can borrow. You’ll sign a loan agreement, digitally or on paper, authorizing the lender to receive your IRS refund and take the loan balance out before sending you the rest. Most applicants receive a decision within 24 hours.
