Yes, you can get scammed with a money order, and the scam works because of a timing gap most people don’t know exists. Your bank is required to make deposited funds available within a day or two, but it can take weeks to actually verify whether the money order is genuine. Scammers live inside that window. By the time the bank discovers the instrument is counterfeit and pulls the money back out of your account, you’ve already wired your own cash to someone you’ll never find.
How the Overpayment Trick Works
The most common version follows a script. Someone sends you a money order for noticeably more than the agreed price, then contacts you about the “mistake” and asks you to deposit it and send the difference back by wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or gift cards. You deposit it, watch the funds appear, and send the overage. Two or three weeks later the bank discovers the money order was fake and reverses the full amount. The scammer has real money. You owe the bank for a counterfeit.
Funds availability is not verification. Federal rules require your bank to release funds from a USPS money order by the next business day if you deposit in person, or by the second business day otherwise.1eCFR. 12 CFR 229.10 – Next-Day Availability That clock runs regardless of whether the instrument is real, and scammers plan around it.
Where These Scams Show Up
The overpayment setup takes different shapes depending on how the scammer finds you. On online marketplaces, a buyer “accidentally” overpays for an item and asks for a refund of the difference before arranging pickup. In fake job offers, you’re hired as a mystery shopper or remote assistant, sent a money order, and told to forward part of it as a work assignment. Lottery and sweepstakes pitches claim you’ve won a prize but owe a processing fee first.
Rental fraud is another version: a supposed landlord demands a security deposit by money order before you’ve toured the property, then disappears. Romance scams add their own layer, where after weeks of conversation the other person claims to be stranded abroad or facing a medical crisis and asks for money.2Federal Trade Commission. What To Know About Romance Scams The common thread is urgency. You’re pushed to move money before you have time to think.
How to Spot a Counterfeit
The fastest red flag is the dollar amount. USPS domestic money orders cap at $1,000, and international ones cap at $700.3USPS. Money Orders – The Basics MoneyGram money orders also top out at around $1,000 at most locations. If someone sends you a postal money order for $1,500 or $2,000, it’s fake. Full stop.
Genuine USPS money orders carry security features that are hard to counterfeit. A watermark of Benjamin Franklin repeats top to bottom along the left side, visible only when you hold the paper to a light. An embedded security thread runs vertically through the document, showing the letters “USPS” alternating right-side up and upside down when backlit.4USPIS.gov. How to Spot a Fake The ink shifts color when you tilt the money order. Flat color, blurry “Post Office” or serial number fields, or paper that feels unusually thick or thin are all warnings.
Verify With the Issuer Before You Deposit
If anything looks off, call before depositing. The USPS money order verification line is 1-866-459-7822, and you’ll need the serial number from the money order.3USPS. Money Orders – The Basics For Western Union money orders, the automated line at (800) 999-9660 checks status using the 11-digit serial number on the receipt stub. You can also walk a postal money order into a post office and ask a clerk to examine it. If the issuer can’t confirm the instrument is valid, don’t deposit it.
What It Costs You If You Deposit a Fake
When a counterfeit comes back through the banking system, your bank reverses the deposit and pulls the full amount from your account. Regulation CC preserves the bank’s right to charge back your account when a deposited item is returned unpaid.5eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) It doesn’t matter that you were the victim or that the teller accepted it. You are responsible for the face value.
If the balance can’t cover the reversal, overdraft fees stack on top. They run around $35 at many banks, with an average closer to $27 across all institutions after some major banks reduced or dropped the charge.6FDIC.gov. Overdraft and Account Fees The fees are the smaller problem. Banks often freeze accounts during fraud investigations, cutting off access to your legitimate money for weeks. In serious cases the bank closes the account and reports the incident to ChexSystems, where negative records stay for five years and can block you from opening an account anywhere else.7HelpWithMyBank.gov. If You’ve Already Deposited One
Contact your bank right away. Tell them you believe the deposit may be fraudulent and ask them to place a hold on it. Do not spend any of the funds, and do not send money to anyone, no matter how urgent the sender claims the situation is.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Someone Sent Me a Check or Money Order for More Than the Price – Should I Be Worried Acting fast won’t always stop the chargeback, but it keeps you from compounding the loss by wiring the “excess” funds.
Hold onto the original money order, the envelope, and every message you exchanged with the sender. That’s evidence.
