You cannot get free car tax on Attendance Allowance. Vehicle tax exemptions in the UK are attached to mobility benefits, and Attendance Allowance is a personal care benefit with no mobility component at all.1GOV.UK. Attendance Allowance The same rule shuts the door on the Motability scheme.
Why Attendance Allowance Is Not a Qualifying Benefit
Attendance Allowance pays £76.70 or £114.60 a week toward the extra costs of needing someone to look after you because of a disability or illness. You have to be State Pension age or older to claim it, and it only looks at personal care and supervision needs.2GOV.UK. Benefit and Pension Rates 2026 to 20271GOV.UK. Attendance Allowance
Free vehicle tax works differently. The DVLA needs to see that you have been assessed for mobility problems and awarded a mobility component at the qualifying level. Attendance Allowance never involves a mobility assessment, so there is nothing on your award for the DVLA to accept.
The Age Gap That Traps People
This is the part that catches most people out. Personal Independence Payment includes a mobility component that can unlock free car tax, but you generally cannot start a new PIP claim once you are past State Pension age.3GOV.UK. Personal Independence Payment (PIP) – Eligibility The system pushes older claimants toward Attendance Allowance instead, and Attendance Allowance has no mobility side. If your mobility problems only develop in later life, you fall into that gap.
Two situations protect you from the gap. If you were already receiving PIP before you reached State Pension age, that award continues and your vehicle tax exemption continues with it. And if you had PIP or Adult Disability Payment within the previous 12 months, you can still make a fresh PIP claim after State Pension age.3GOV.UK. Personal Independence Payment (PIP) – Eligibility

Transport Help You Can Still Get on Attendance Allowance
Free car tax is out of reach, but Attendance Allowance does open some other routes.
You qualify for a Disabled Persons Railcard, which takes a third off adult rail fares for you and a companion travelling with you. It costs £20 for one year or £54 for three, and your Attendance Allowance award letter is your proof of eligibility.5Disabled Persons Railcard. Are You Eligible6Disabled Persons Railcard. Benefits
A Blue Badge is worth applying for as well. Councils assess Blue Badge applications on walking ability rather than which benefit you receive, so Attendance Allowance neither guarantees nor prevents a badge. Your local council handles the application.
If you also receive Pension Credit Guarantee Credit, the combination can bring in help with travel costs to NHS hospital appointments through the Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme. Attendance Allowance on its own does not qualify you, but paired with certain means-tested benefits it does.7NHS. Healthcare Travel Costs Scheme (HTCS)
