You cannot get Barbados citizenship through grandparents. Barbadian citizenship by descent runs only one generation outside the country: it passes from a parent who was born in Barbados to a child born abroad, and it does not continue on to that child’s children.1Consulate General of Barbados at Toronto. Why the Chain Stops at Your Parent
The rule under the Constitution and the Barbados Citizenship Act (Cap. 186) is narrow. You can register for citizenship by descent only if you were born outside Barbados and one of your parents was born in Barbados and is a Barbadian citizen.2Barbados Immigration Department. Barbadian Citizenship The operative words are “born in.” Holding Barbadian citizenship through some other route, including through descent, is not enough to pass citizenship to the next generation.
That is what breaks the grandparent link. The intuitive logic runs: grandparent born in Barbados, parent registers as a citizen by descent, grandchild inherits descent from that parent. The Constitution does not treat those two parents the same. Only actual birth on Barbadian soil creates the anchor the next generation can use, and a parent who acquired citizenship by descent is not a new anchor. The Toronto Consulate General has stated directly that grandchildren and great-grandchildren are not eligible.1Consulate General of Barbados at Toronto. If Your Parent Was Born Abroad to a Barbadian Grandparent
Your parent may still be able to register as a Barbadian citizen by descent, since they are the first generation born outside Barbados to a Barbadian-born parent. That is worth checking, and it may matter to your family. It will not, however, produce a citizenship claim for you. Once your parent obtains citizenship by descent, the status does not extend downward, because descent from a descent-based citizen is not recognized. You would remain a foreign national even after your parent’s certificate is issued.
Other Ways to Become Barbadian
The descent door being closed does not mean every door is. The remaining routes are slower and demand a real commitment to living in or connecting with Barbados, but they exist.
Naturalization After Residency
Foreign nationals can apply for citizenship by naturalization after living in Barbados for at least seven years, with a minimum of five of those years spent physically in the country.3Barbados Law Courts. Barbados Citizenship Act CAP 186 Naturalization requires an oath of allegiance. The fees are BDS $300 to apply and BDS $1,500 if approved.2Barbados Immigration Department. Barbadian Citizenship
Marriage to a Barbadian Citizen
Spouses of Barbadian citizens can apply for registration as a citizen using Form R1, submitting marriage certificates and proof of the spouse’s Barbadian citizenship.2Barbados Immigration Department. Barbadian Citizenship Marriage does not confer citizenship automatically; the application still has to be filed and approved.
The Welcome Stamp as a Bridge
The Barbados Welcome Stamp is a 12-month permit for remote workers who earn their income outside Barbados. It is not itself a route to citizenship, but it lets you live on the island legally and could contribute toward the residency time naturalization requires. The program has drawn strong interest from applicants in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
Dual Citizenship If You Go the Long Way
If you do eventually naturalize or register through marriage, Barbados recognizes dual citizenship, so you will not have to give up your current nationality to hold a Barbadian one. Tax residency is a separate question from citizenship: Barbados taxes residents on worldwide income, but you are only a tax resident if you spend more than 182 days there in the income year or maintain a permanent home on the island and notify the Revenue Commissioner of your intent to reside. A Barbadian citizen living full-time elsewhere is generally not taxed by Barbados on foreign income, and a Double Taxation Agreement with the United States helps prevent the same income from being taxed twice for U.S.-based citizens.4Barbados Revenue Authority.
