Can You Get a PO Box in Another State? Costs, Sizes, and Renewal

You can rent a PO Box in another state. USPS allows it in any state regardless of where you live, with one condition worth planning around: you have to show up in person at the post office where the box is located to verify your identity and pick up your keys.1USPS. PO Boxes Everything else about the process is straightforward once you build that single trip into your plan.

Your Home Address Doesn’t Have to Match

USPS asks for two forms of current, valid U.S. identification when you apply: one photo ID and one non-photo ID that confirms your physical address.2USPS. PO Box Help – Valid Identification That address does not have to be in the same state as the PO Box. This is what makes an out-of-state box possible in the first place. USPS wants to confirm who you are and where you actually live, not that you live near the box.

Acceptable photo IDs include a U.S. driver’s license or state ID card from any state, a military, government, university, or corporate employee ID, a passport, passport card, alien registration card, or certificate of naturalization, and a NEXUS or Matricula Consular card.

For the second, non-photo ID, USPS accepts a current lease, mortgage, or deed of trust, a voter or vehicle registration card, or a home or vehicle insurance policy. Social Security cards, credit cards, and birth certificates are not accepted.3USPS. PS Form 1093 – Application for Post Office Box Service

How to Reserve the Box From Out of State

You have two ways in: start online before your trip, or handle everything at the counter once you arrive.

Reserving Online First

Use the USPS PO Box search tool, pick a post office in the state you want, choose a size, and select a payment term of 3, 6, or 12 months. Once you pay, you have 30 days to appear at that post office with your printed PS Form 1093 and both IDs. A postal worker verifies your identity and hands over two keys or a lock combination.1USPS. PO Boxes

That 30-day window is the trap for out-of-state applicants. If you can’t get to the post office within 30 days, you can lose the reservation. Book the trip before you pay.

Doing It All at the Counter

For a lot of out-of-state renters this is actually the simpler path. Fill out PS Form 1093 at the post office, hand over your two IDs and payment, and walk out with keys the same day. One visit, done.

Sizes and Costs

USPS offers five box sizes, from extra-small (roughly 3″ × 5½” × 14¾”, enough for 10–15 letters) up to extra-large (22½” × 12″ × 14¾”, big enough for Flat Rate Boxes and small parcels).4USPS. PO Box Sizes

Rental prices vary dramatically by location. A small box in a rural post office might cost under $50 for six months; the same size in a major city can run several times that. When you search a specific location online, USPS shows the available sizes and exact pricing for that post office. Payment terms are 3, 6, or 12 months.1USPS. PO Boxes

Packages From UPS, FedEx, and Amazon

A standard PO Box only accepts mail delivered by USPS. Private carriers cannot deliver to a “PO Box” address, which catches a lot of people renting a box for online shopping.

The workaround is USPS Street Addressing, offered at participating post offices. Street Addressing lets you use the post office’s physical street address followed by “#” and your box number. Private carriers deliver to that street address, and the post office puts the item in your box or holds it at the counter.5USPS. Customer Agreement for Premium PO Box Service Enhancements

A few rules matter. You have to use “#” and your box number. Writing “Suite” or “Apt.” instead will get mail returned to sender. You cannot receive alcohol, items over 70 pounds, or anything prohibited by postal regulations through Street Addressing. And you cannot use the street-style address as a physical residence or business address on legal documents; doing so can violate civil and criminal laws and lead USPS to close your box.5USPS. Not every post office offers Street Addressing. USPS keeps a list of participating locations through its PostalPro site, and you can check before you rent.6USPS PostalPro. Premium PO Box Service Street Addressing

Handling Mail When You’re Not Nearby

The practical problem with a box in another state is that you aren’t driving to it every week. A few USPS services help.

Informed Delivery

Informed Delivery is a free service that emails you grayscale images of letter-sized mail heading to your address each morning. PO Box customers in eligible ZIP codes can sign up, though you’ll need a USPS.com business account rather than a personal one. Not every PO Box ZIP code is covered yet, but most are.7USPS. Informed Delivery – Mail and Package Notifications For a box you rarely see in person, this lets you check each morning whether anything important arrived and decide whether it’s worth a trip or a forwarding request.

Premium Forwarding Service

Premium Forwarding Service Residential bundles all your mail and ships it to another address weekly via Priority Mail. It’s built for snowbirds, remote workers, and anyone splitting time between two states. As of 2026, enrollment costs $26.40 online or $28.70 at the counter, plus a weekly fee of $29.70 whether or not there’s anything to ship that week.8USPS. 2026 Postage Price Change Those weekly charges add up quickly, so the service makes the most sense for a defined stretch of time rather than as a permanent arrangement.

Standard Mail Forwarding

If you’re actually moving and want mail from your old address redirected to the new PO Box, standard forwarding does it for 12 months at no charge. First-Class Mail, periodicals, and packages sent through Priority Mail or USPS Ground Advantage are forwarded free. After the first year, you can buy extended forwarding for an additional 6, 12, or 18 months.9USPS. Standard Forward Mail

Don’t Miss the Renewal

USPS gives you a 10-day grace period after your rental term expires. If you don’t pay within those 10 days, the box is automatically closed.10USPS. Policies, Procedures, and Forms Updates Once it’s closed, new mail gets stamped “Box Closed — No Order” and returned to the sender. Mail that arrived before closure but was never picked up is marked “Unclaimed.”11Postal Explorer. 508 Recipient Services

This is easy to overlook when the box is in another state. Set a calendar reminder at least two weeks before your term ends. Renewals can be done online, so keeping the box active doesn’t require another trip.

What an Out-of-State PO Box Won’t Do

Two things a PO Box in another state cannot accomplish, because people ask.

It doesn’t establish residency. Renting a box in another state gives you a mailing address there. No government agency treats it as proof of residency. Voter registration, driver’s license applications, and state tax filings all require a physical home address. State tax agencies look at where you sleep, work, and spend your time, not where your mail goes.

It doesn’t work for business formation or as a registered agent address. Most states require a physical street address on LLC or corporation formation documents, and every state requires a registered agent with a physical address in the state of formation who is available in person during business hours to accept service of process. A PO Box cannot fill that role. Filings that list a PO Box as the registered agent address are usually rejected, and using an invalid address later can lead to missed legal deadlines or administrative dissolution.

When a CMRA Makes More Sense

A commercial mail receiving agency, such as a UPS Store or a local mailbox shop, rents boxes and gives you a real street address rather than a “PO Box” number. You apply using PS Form 1583 instead of PS Form 1093, and you still need two forms of ID with one photo.12USPS. Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA)

CMRAs can accept packages from any carrier because there’s a staffed street address behind the box. Many offer mail scanning, forwarding, and virtual mailbox services that let you manage everything remotely, which is genuinely useful when your box is in another state. The tradeoff is a higher price. And like a PO Box, a CMRA address still cannot establish legal residency or serve as a registered agent address.
