You cannot file I-485 online. USCIS does not list Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, among the forms available for electronic submission, so the application has to be printed and mailed to a USCIS lockbox. You can, however, set up a free USCIS online account to track your case, receive notices, and update your information after the paper application is filed.
Why I-485 Has to Go by Mail
USCIS publishes a list of forms eligible for online filing, and I-485 is not on it. Related forms like the I-90 (green card renewal), I-130 (family petition), and I-140 (employment-based petition) can be submitted electronically, but the adjustment of status application itself still requires paper.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Forms Available to File Online
This matters even when the underlying petition could have been filed online. USCIS states that if you submit Form I-140 together with Form I-485, the entire package must go by mail.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Forms Available to File Online In other words, the moment I-485 enters the picture, the whole filing becomes a paper filing.
Where to Mail Your I-485
USCIS operates several lockbox facilities, and the correct mailing address depends on your eligibility category and, in many cases, the state where you live. Family-based applicants, employment-based applicants, asylum-based applicants, and investors each have different designated addresses.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Direct Filing Addresses for Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status Sending your application to the wrong lockbox can delay processing or lead to rejection.
Check the USCIS filing-address page for I-485 right before you mail. If you ship the package with FedEx, UPS, or DHL rather than USPS, you need the courier street address rather than the P.O. Box listed for regular mail.
Once USCIS receives and accepts your package, it will mail back Form I-797C, a Notice of Action confirming receipt and providing a receipt number.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. What You Can Do Online After Filing
Even though the application itself is paper, a USCIS online account is worth setting up. A free account gives you one place to check case status using your receipt number, receive electronic copies of notices, respond to requests for evidence, and update your address.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Address changes are the most common post-filing task, and they can be done entirely online. All noncitizens (with narrow exceptions for certain diplomats and visa waiver visitors) must report an address change to USCIS within 10 days of moving. The Enterprise Change of Address tool on the USCIS website satisfies that legal requirement and updates your pending case at the same time.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. How to Change Your Address If USCIS does not have your current address, you can miss biometrics appointments, interview notices, and approval letters, and the agency will not resend them because you moved.
Building the Mailed Package So It Is Not Rejected
Because everything goes in on paper, a missing item can send your entire package back. A few pieces of the filing catch applicants off guard.
Fees
The I-485 filing fee is $1,440 for applicants age 14 and older.6U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Fee Schedule That amount includes biometric services; USCIS folded the old separate biometrics fee into the main application fee starting April 1, 2024.7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Frequently Asked Questions on the USCIS Fee Rule
Forms I-765 (work permit) and I-131 (travel document) are no longer bundled with I-485. Before April 2024, paying the I-485 fee covered those companion applications. Now each requires a separate fee: $260 for a work permit filed alongside a pending I-485, and $630 for a travel document.7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Frequently Asked Questions on the USCIS Fee Rule
Travel while your I-485 is pending is a trap worth flagging. If you leave the United States without an approved advance parole document, USCIS will generally treat your application as abandoned. Get the travel document approved before booking any international trip.
Medical Exam (Form I-693)
Every I-485 applicant needs a completed Form I-693, the Report of Immigration Medical Examination and Vaccination Record. As of December 2, 2024, USCIS requires you to submit Form I-693 with your I-485 application. Leaving it out can cause USCIS to reject the entire package.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Report of Immigration Medical Examination and Vaccination Record
The exam must be performed by a USCIS-designated civil surgeon; your regular doctor cannot complete it unless they hold that designation. You can search for civil surgeons on the USCIS website. After the exam, the civil surgeon gives you the completed I-693 in a sealed envelope. Do not open it. Submit it sealed with your I-485 package, because USCIS will return any form that arrives in an opened or altered envelope.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Report of Immigration Medical Examination and Vaccination Record
The exam is not free, and insurance rarely covers it. Costs typically range from $250 to $650 depending on your location and how many vaccinations you need, and can run higher if extensive lab work or catch-up vaccinations are required.
Identity, Immigration History, and Category Evidence
Include your passport biographical page and any U.S. visa stamps. If you do not have a valid passport, a government-issued national ID card or birth certificate can substitute. Any document not in English must include a certified translation, with the translator stating in writing that the translation is accurate and that they are competent to translate from the original language.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Chapter 4 – Documentation
Gather copies of any prior U.S. visas, your Form I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record), and any previously filed immigration applications or petitions. Include asylum or refugee approval documents if they apply to you.
The relationship or employment evidence depends on the basis for your green card. Family-based applicants should include marriage certificates, birth certificates, or adoption records proving the qualifying relationship. Employment-based applicants need the job offer letter, labor certification (if applicable), and evidence of qualifications such as degrees or professional certifications. Applicants in special categories such as VAWA self-petitioners should include the specific documentation their category requires.
Affidavit of Support
Most family-based applicants and some employment-based applicants must include Form I-864, Affidavit of Support, from their financial sponsor. Form I-864 is a legally binding contract in which the sponsor promises to financially support the immigrant and reimburse any government agency that provides means-tested public benefits to the sponsored person.10U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Affidavit of Support Under Section 213A of the INA The sponsor completes the form and gives it to you to include in your I-485 package. If the primary sponsor’s income falls short of the required threshold, a joint sponsor may be needed.
The Short Version
Filing I-485 online is not an option today. Print the form, assemble the fee, the sealed medical, and the supporting documents for your category, and mail the package to the lockbox address that matches your eligibility basis and state. Then create a USCIS online account so that everything after the mailroom — status checks, notices, RFE responses, and address changes — can happen electronically.
