You usually cannot deposit a money order through a mobile app. Most large U.S. banks list money orders as ineligible for mobile deposit, and U.S. Postal Service money orders are almost always excluded even by banks that accept other types. A few institutions do allow it under strict conditions, so the first step is to check your own bank’s current eligible-items list in the app or on its website before you try.
Which Banks Allow It
Bank of America lists money orders among items that are “currently not accepted via mobile deposit” and tells customers to visit a branch.1Bank of America. How to Deposit Checks Online Using the Mobile Banking App Navy Federal Credit Union excludes money orders from its mobile deposit service entirely.2Navy Federal Credit Union. Mobile Check Deposits Chase describes money orders as items that “may not be” eligible, meaning the app can reject them case by case.3Chase. What You Need to Know About Mobile Deposits
Wells Fargo draws a line based on issuer. It specifically bars U.S. Postal Service money orders from mobile deposit but does not treat every money order as ineligible, which suggests certain non-USPS money orders from issuers such as Western Union or MoneyGram may go through.4Wells Fargo. Mobile Deposit FAQs Some smaller banks and credit unions accept certain money orders in-app, but policies change often. The eligible-items list in your bank’s help section is the only reliable source for your account.
Why USPS Money Orders Are Almost Always Excluded
Postal money orders carry security features designed for in-person verification, including watermarks and color-shifting ink, that do not scan reliably through a phone camera. Wells Fargo names them explicitly on its ineligible list.4Wells Fargo. Mobile Deposit FAQs
The timing math also favors the teller window. Under Regulation CC, a USPS money order deposited in person qualifies for next-business-day availability, the same fast access Treasury checks and cashier’s checks receive.5Federal Reserve. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance A deposit not made in person does not have to be available until the second business day, so the speed advantage mobile deposit normally offers disappears for this one item type. If you are holding a USPS money order, a branch visit is both more reliable and faster.
How to Prepare and Submit It
If your bank does accept the money order, preparation decides whether the app takes it. Fill in the payee line with your name exactly as it appears on your account. Sign the back in the endorsement area, then write “For Mobile Deposit Only” and your account number beneath your signature.
That restrictive endorsement is not just paperwork. Under Regulation CC, a bank that accepts an original check bearing a restrictive endorsement inconsistent with how it was deposited cannot make an indemnity claim against the first bank.6eCFR. 12 CFR 229.34 – Warranties and Indemnities For you, that means the endorsement signals to any other institution that the item has already been deposited, which deters fraud and protects you from accidental duplicate processing.7Cornell Law Institute. 12 CFR Appendix E to Part 229 – Commentary
Check your deposit limits before you submit. These vary widely. Regions Bank, for example, sets a $6,000 daily and $10,000 monthly cap for standard accounts, with higher ceilings for premium customers.8Regions Bank. Mobile Deposit Newer accounts often have lower caps. Go over the limit and the app rejects the submission outright.
Open the app’s mobile deposit feature, pick the destination account, enter the exact dollar amount on the money order, and photograph the front and back. Image quality is the most common failure point. Place the money order on a dark, flat surface in good light, keep your hand and phone from casting a shadow, and make sure all four edges, the dollar amount, and the serial number are sharp. The review screen shows the scanned data so you can confirm the amount before tapping submit.
When the Funds Become Available
Hold times are set by Regulation CC. For deposits not made in person, which covers every mobile deposit, the first $275 of a day’s non-next-day deposits generally must be available by the second business day after the banking day of deposit.9eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) The $275 figure took effect July 1, 2025, replacing the earlier $225 threshold.5Federal Reserve. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance The remaining balance can be held an additional business day, or longer if the bank invokes an exception hold for a new account or a deposit over $5,525. In practice, many banks release money order funds within two to three business days.
If the App Rejects Your Deposit
Common reasons for rejection include an ineligible money order type, a missing or illegible endorsement, poor image quality, hitting a deposit limit, or a duplicate submission.2Navy Federal Credit Union. Mobile Check Deposits You still have several ways to deposit or cash it:
- A bank branch is the most reliable option, and USPS money orders deposited in person qualify for next-business-day availability under Regulation CC.5Federal Reserve. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance
- Many bank ATMs accept money orders the same way they accept checks. Deposits at your own bank’s ATM typically clear faster than at a third-party machine.
- You can cash a USPS money order at any post office, a Western Union money order at participating retailers, or a MoneyGram money order at locations that sell them. A small fee may apply.
- Check-cashing stores will cash money orders for a percentage fee, typically 1% to 5% of the face value.
Fraud Risks to Know Before You Deposit
If a money order you deposit turns out to be counterfeit, your bank will reverse the credit and hold you responsible for the full face value. A Department of Justice advisory warns that if you have already withdrawn or wired any of those funds, you owe the bank what you removed even though you were the victim of the fraud.10U.S. Department of Justice. Public Advisory – Counterfeit Checks Banks have also referred suspected counterfeit deposits to law enforcement, putting the depositor under criminal investigation. Wait for the funds to clear before you spend any of them, especially on a money order from someone you do not know well.
Depositing the same money order twice, once through the app and once at a branch or ATM, is fraud. Under Regulation CC, each bank that presents an electronic check image warrants that no person will be charged twice for the same item.6eCFR. 12 CFR 229.34 – Warranties and Indemnities If the duplicate is caught, the bank reverses one credit and may close your account. Intentional duplicate deposits can be prosecuted as federal bank fraud, which carries penalties of up to $1,000,000 in fines, up to 30 years in prison, or both.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 U.S. Code 1344 – Bank Fraud
Keep the Original Until Funds Clear
Hold onto the physical money order after a successful mobile deposit. Regulation CC sets no retention period for consumers, but its dispute process allows up to 40 calendar days for a claim and another 5 for the bank to resolve it.9eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) Many banks suggest 14 days; keeping it for 45 to 60 days covers the full dispute window. Store it somewhere secure, not loose in a drawer where it could be found and deposited again. Once the retention period passes and the funds are confirmed, shred it.
