In most cases, you cannot check into a hotel under 18 in the United States. Booking a room is a contract, and a minor generally can’t sign a binding one, so the large chains set 18 as the floor and many properties push it to 21. There are a few workable paths around this, but showing up alone at 17 with cash and hoping for the best is not one of them.

Why Hotels Won’t Rent to Minors

Identity verification is the second gate. You’ll need a government-issued photo ID at check-in, typically a driver’s license or passport. Even if a hotel were willing to bend on age, no ID means no room.

Minimum Age at Major Hotel Chains

There’s no single industry-wide rule. Each chain, and often each individual property, sets its own minimum:

Casino Hotels and Party Destinations Require 21 or Older

Some hotels almost never bend. Casino properties enforce a strict 21-plus rule because state gambling and alcohol laws demand it. Resort destinations popular with spring break crowds sometimes go further. Hotels in places like Miami Beach, Gulf Shores, and parts of the Florida Keys have been known to require guests to be 25 during peak seasons. The same property that welcomes 18-year-olds in October may refuse them in March. The restriction usually applies to the person whose name is on the reservation, not every guest in the room.

The Credit Card Hold Is a Second Barrier

Even at hotels that will rent to an 18-year-old, the payment hold catches many younger travelers by surprise. Hotels place a temporary hold on your card at check-in to cover incidentals like room service, minibar charges, and possible damage. These holds commonly run $20 to $200 above your room rate and stay on your card until a few days after checkout.

Getting a credit card before 21 isn’t easy. Debit cards work at many hotels but come with tradeoffs. The hold ties up real money in your checking account instead of available credit, and it can take several business days to release after you leave. If the hold drops your balance too low, you can trigger overdraft fees on unrelated transactions. Some hotels require a larger deposit when you pay with debit. Prepaid Visa or Mastercard products are accepted at some properties but not all, and you’ll need enough loaded to cover both the room and the incidental hold.

Ways a Minor Can Still Get a Room

A Parent or Guardian Books and Checks In

This is the most reliable route. When a parent or legal guardian is the contracting party, the hotel’s age concern goes away. The adult puts their card on file, their name goes on the reservation, and any charges or damages fall on them. Some properties will also accept a parent’s written authorization along with a copy of their ID and credit card if the adult can’t be there in person, but this is far from universal. If you plan to try it, call the hotel ahead of time and get confirmation in writing.

Emancipated Minors

A legally emancipated minor holds many of the same rights as an adult, including the general ability to enter contracts.10Legal Information Institute. Front desk staff often aren’t familiar with the concept, so bringing your court order and asking for a manager works better than trying to explain the law to a clerk.

Active Duty Military Under 21

There’s no federal law and no universal industry policy giving service members under 21 an automatic right to check in. Many hotels will accommodate active duty travelers who present a valid military ID and official travel orders, but many is not all. Some properties refuse regardless of military status; others accept it only with a government or military rate. Call the specific hotel in advance and confirm before you rely on it.

School Trips and Organized Groups

Minors traveling with school trips, sports teams, or other supervised groups are routinely accommodated because the adult chaperone or group leader is the contracting party. These bookings are usually arranged in advance through the hotel’s sales department rather than at a normal check-in counter.

What to Do If You Booked Online and Get Turned Away

Booking a room online does not guarantee you’ll be allowed to check in. Third-party platforms like Expedia, Booking.com, and Hotels.com typically require you to be 18 to make a reservation, but they don’t always flag that the specific hotel’s check-in age is 21 or higher. You can complete the booking, pay in full, and still be refused at the desk.

If that happens, your refund path depends on how you booked. For third-party reservations, the hotel doesn’t hold your money; the platform does. Contact the platform’s customer service to request a refund or rebooking. If the platform failed to disclose an age restriction that appeared in the hotel’s own policies, your case for a full refund is stronger. Save your confirmation emails, note the name of the front desk agent who turned you away, and screenshot any policy signs at the property.

For direct bookings on the hotel’s website, your options track the cancellation policy you agreed to. Flexible rates usually refund without a fight. Prepaid non-refundable rates are harder to recover, though some properties will make an exception if the age requirement genuinely wasn’t clear.

Alternatives Worth Considering

Hostels are often more flexible. Hostelling International has no upper age limit and welcomes solo travelers, families, and groups. Minors under 18 need written permission from a parent or legal guardian to stay unaccompanied, and families with young children or groups of minors are placed in private rooms rather than shared dorms.11Hostelling International. Vacation rental platforms don’t solve the problem. Airbnb requires the booking guest to be at least 18 to create an account or reserve a listing, and hosts can set their own minimum up to 25, which is common for whole-home rentals.12Airbnb. If you’re under 18 and need a hotel room, the cleanest answer is still to have a parent book it. Confirm with the hotel a day or two before arrival, make sure the parent’s name is on the reservation, and make sure their card is on file for incidentals.
