Yes, you can change your DS-160 after booking a visa appointment, and doing so does not cancel the interview on its own. You have two routes: reopen the submitted DS-160 and edit it directly, or submit a new DS-160 and link its new barcode to your existing appointment. The main thing is to get the correct barcode onto your appointment profile before you show up at the embassy.

Two Ways to Fix the Form

For any DS-160 submitted on or after November 1, 2010, you can return to the Consular Electronic Application Center, enter your application ID, answer the security questions, and edit the application in place.¹ This is the cleanest option for a typo, a corrected date, or a change of employer or address. Because you keep the same application, the barcode does not change, and your appointment profile stays valid as it is.

The alternative is starting a fresh DS-160. You’d do this if you can no longer access the original, if the corrections are too extensive to be worth editing one field at a time, or if you saved a draft on the CEAC site more than 30 days ago and the system has since deleted it. A partial draft only stays on CEAC for 30 days unless you also saved a local copy, which you can reload through the “Upload a Previously Saved Application” option on the Getting Started page. A new submission generates a new confirmation barcode, the one that starts with “AA,” and that new number is what needs to get into your appointment profile.¹

Update the Barcode on Your Appointment

If you submitted a new DS-160 rather than editing the original, your appointment is still tied to the old barcode. Consular staff pull up your application using whatever number is on your profile, so a mismatch means they may not see your corrected answers at the window.¹

To swap the barcode in the U.S. visa appointment system:

Log in at ais.usvisa-info.com.
On the Applicant Summary Page, click the settings icon next to your name.
Select “Edit.”
Replace the old DS-160 number with the confirmation number from your new application.
Save the change and print a fresh appointment confirmation.

Multiple U.S. embassies require the update at least three business days before the interview, counting only days the embassy is open.² If your interview is closer than that when you catch the mistake, contact the embassy where you’re applying and ask how they want you to handle it. The State Department routes these questions to the specific post because each one handles corrections a little differently.³

Will You Have to Reschedule the Interview?

Usually not. Editing an existing DS-160 keeps the same barcode, so nothing in the appointment portal needs to change and your date stays. Submitting a new DS-160 also lets you keep the date in most cases, as long as you update the barcode in the portal within the required window.

The State Department does warn that incomplete or inaccurate answers “may” require you to “correct your application and reschedule your visa interview appointment.”¹ Whether a reschedule is actually needed comes down to the individual embassy, so once you’ve made the correction, check with the post where you applied.

What to Look For Before the Interview

Some errors matter more than others, but all of them are easier to fix now than to explain at the window. The ones that come up most often:

Name spelling that doesn’t match the passport, including missing hyphens or middle names.
Travel dates that no longer reflect your itinerary.
Prior U.S. trips left off the form. An omission reads like concealment, even when it wasn’t.
Wrong employer or job title. Consular officers use employment details to weigh ties to your home country and financial stability.
For F and M student visa applicants, SEVIS ID and program dates that don’t match the I-20.

The consular officer uses the DS-160, together with the interview itself, to decide whether you qualify for a nonimmigrant visa.⁴ Gaps between what’s on the form and what you say in person are one of the most common reasons an interview slows down.

What Happens if You Don’t Fix It in Time

At the interview, the officer has your DS-160 on screen and will ask questions that overlap with your answers. If something doesn’t line up, the officer will ask why. For forms submitted after November 1, 2010, the embassy can reopen the DS-160 on the spot and ask you to correct it.¹ In practice, that pauses the case. You fix the form, then wait for the embassy to tell you whether they’ll process the corrected version or want you to come back on a new date. Weeks can go by.

Bring a printed copy of your DS-160 confirmation page to the interview. The confirmation page carries the barcode the embassy uses to pull up your application.¹ If you submitted a corrected form, bring both the old and new confirmation pages so the officer can see the update.

When a Correction Is More Than a Correction

One thing worth knowing before you edit: signing the DS-160 is an unsworn declaration under penalty of perjury, which the State Department treats as carrying the same legal weight as sworn testimony.¹ Under 8 U.S.C. § 1182(a)(6)(C)(i), a foreign national who uses fraud or willfully misrepresents a material fact to obtain a visa is inadmissible to the United States.⁵

That statute is aimed at willful, material misstatements, not typos or honest mistakes. The Board of Immigration Appeals held in Matter of Tijam that a misrepresentation must be made with knowledge of its falsity to count as willful.⁶ Correcting a genuine error before the interview is exactly the kind of thing the system contemplates. The practical point is only this: fix problems by editing the form, not by presenting a different story at the window than the one already on file.
