Can US Citizens Live in New Zealand? Visas, Residency, and Taxes

US citizens can live in New Zealand, but only with a visa tied to a specific purpose: a job, a study program, a qualifying family relationship, or a substantial investment. There is no general relocation visa, so the question of whether you can move to New Zealand as an American really comes down to which category you fit.

Visa Routes Open to Americans

Employment is the most common path. The Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) requires a full-time job offer (at least 30 hours per week) from a New Zealand employer holding accreditation with Immigration New Zealand, plus either two years of relevant work experience or a qualification at level 4 or higher on New Zealand’s framework.1Immigration New Zealand. Accredited Employer Work Visa It lasts up to five years for most roles and three years for lower-skilled ones. Partners and children are not covered on the same application and need their own visas.

The Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa is the residence-class version many people aim toward. You need a full-time skilled job offer from an accredited employer and at least six skilled resident points from a mix of qualifications and New Zealand work experience.2Immigration New Zealand. Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa A bachelor’s degree or higher, occupational registration requiring two or more years of training, or earnings of at least 1.5 times the median wage can each get you to the threshold. If you already have six points, you can apply directly without first working in New Zealand. Short of that, each year of skilled work in the country on a temporary visa adds points.3Immigration New Zealand. Skilled Migrant Category Pathway to Residence

If you are between 18 and 30, the USA Working Holiday Visa lets you live and work in New Zealand for up to 12 months.4Immigration New Zealand. USA Working Holiday Visa It is built for travel with incidental work, not careers, but it gets you on the ground with time to look for something longer term.

Study

A student visa requires acceptance from a New Zealand education provider and proof of funds: at least NZ$20,000 per year for living costs, or NZ$17,000 for primary and secondary school students.5Study with New Zealand. New Zealand Student Visas Most student visa holders can work up to 25 hours a week during term and full-time during scheduled breaks.6Immigration New Zealand. Working on a Student Visa

Family

If you have a New Zealand citizen or resident partner, parent, or adult child, family-sponsored visas may apply, including partnership visas, parent visas, and dependent child visas. Each has its own rules for relationship evidence, financial support, and sponsorship. Some, like the Parent Retirement Resident Visa, carry substantial financial thresholds of their own.7Immigration New Zealand. Parent Retirement Resident Visa

Investment

The Active Investor Plus Visa is for high-net-worth applicants. The Growth category requires at least NZ$5 million invested for 36 months; the Balanced category requires NZ$10 million for 60 months.8Immigration New Zealand. Active Investor Plus Visa After maintaining the investment for the required period, you can apply for permanent residence.

Requirements Every Applicant Has to Meet

Whichever visa you pursue, a common set of baseline checks applies.

Health. Depending on the visa and length of stay, you may need a medical exam, a chest X-ray, or both, and any pre-existing conditions must be declared.9Immigration New Zealand. Who Needs an X-ray or Medical Examination Immigration New Zealand assesses whether your health would impose significant costs on the public system, and conditions that might do so can complicate approval.

Character. Applicants aged 17 and older must provide police certificates from their country of citizenship and from every country where they have lived for 12 months or more. A serious criminal history can disqualify you, though waivers are considered in some circumstances.

English language. Many categories require proof of English proficiency through tests such as IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, Cambridge B2 First, or the Occupational English Test. US citizens who have spent at least five years working or studying in the United States, the UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand are exempt from testing for skilled residence visas; Immigration New Zealand confirms citizenship from your passport.10Immigration New Zealand. Funds. Non-work categories, and any gap before a job starts, require evidence you can support yourself and any dependents. Student applicants face a fixed threshold; other categories are judged by personal circumstances and local cost of living.

How the Application Works

Most applications go through Immigration New Zealand’s online portal, where you upload documents and pay fees in one process.11Immigration New Zealand. Applying Online Have these ready:

  • A valid US passport with enough remaining validity to cover your planned stay.
  • Police certificates from the US and any other country where you have lived for 12 or more months.
  • Medical results completed through an approved panel physician before submission.
  • Supporting documents such as birth and marriage certificates, educational transcripts and degrees, job offer letters or employment contracts, and financial statements.

Both countries are members of the Hague Apostille Convention, so US-issued civil documents like birth and marriage certificates generally need an apostille from the relevant US state office before New Zealand authorities will accept them.

Fees vary by visa, and Immigration New Zealand provides an online calculator that gives an exact figure once you enter your citizenship, location, and category.12Immigration New Zealand. How Much Visa Applications Cost and When to Pay Most international visitors also pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy of NZ$100 at the time of application.13Immigration New Zealand. Paying the International Visitor Levy Processing runs from a few weeks for straightforward cases to several months for residence-class applications, and Immigration New Zealand may ask for more information or schedule an interview along the way.

Healthcare Once You Arrive

Your access to New Zealand’s public health system depends on your visa. Work visa holders with a stay of two or more consecutive years qualify for the full range of publicly funded health and disability services, the same coverage available to New Zealand residents.14Health New Zealand. Eligibility for Publicly Funded Health and Disability Services The two-year threshold can be met by one visa or by consecutive ones.

Under two years, no public coverage. Student and working holiday visa holders normally fall on the wrong side of that line and need private health insurance in place before arrival. Even people who qualify for public care often carry supplemental private cover for specialists, dental care, and shorter waits.

You Still Owe US Taxes

This is where Americans get caught out. The United States taxes its citizens on worldwide income regardless of where they live, so moving to New Zealand does not end your annual US federal filing obligation. New Zealand also taxes residents on worldwide income, so without planning you can face two bills on the same paycheck.

The main relief is the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion. For tax year 2026 it lets you exclude up to $132,900 of foreign earned income from your US return.15Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 To claim it you must meet either the bona fide residence test (a full uninterrupted tax year of New Zealand residence) or the physical presence test (at least 330 full days outside the US in a 12-month period). A foreign housing exclusion of up to $39,870 in 2026 is also available for qualifying housing costs.16Internal Revenue Service. Figuring the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion

The US and New Zealand also have a tax treaty aimed at preventing double taxation, and foreign tax credits can offset remaining US liability on income above the exclusion. The interaction between the exclusion, credits, and New Zealand’s tax system gets complicated fast, and a tax professional with expatriate experience is worth the fee.

From Visa to Residence to Citizenship

New Zealand distinguishes a Resident Visa from a Permanent Resident Visa. A Resident Visa lets you live in the country indefinitely but comes with a travel condition, usually a 24-month window during which you can leave and return. If that window closes while you are overseas, your resident status is at risk. After two consecutive years on a Resident Visa, you can apply for a Permanent Resident Visa, which drops the travel restriction.2Immigration New Zealand. Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa

The Skilled Migrant Category is the most common route to a Resident Visa. Family sponsorship, investor categories, and partnership-based applications are the other main paths. Whichever you use, you have to still meet the health and character requirements when you apply for residence.

After five years of living in New Zealand as a resident, you become eligible to apply for citizenship.17Immigration New Zealand. Becoming a Permanent Resident of New Zealand A Permanent Resident Visa is not a prerequisite, but the physical presence rules are strict: at least 1,350 days in New Zealand across those five years, with at least 240 days in each 12-month period.18New Zealand Government. Presence in NZ Requirements In practice you cannot spend more than about four months a year outside the country without breaking eligibility.

New Zealand recognizes dual citizenship, and the United States does not require you to renounce US citizenship when naturalizing elsewhere.19New Zealand Government. Dual Citizenship You can hold both passports and use both freely.

If You Are Bringing a Pet

New Zealand’s biosecurity rules are strict, and moving a pet takes more lead time than most people expect. Dogs and cats arriving from the US face a mandatory quarantine of at least 10 days on arrival, and you will need original vaccination records and documentation of acceptable parasite treatments completed before departure.20Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Pet Travel From the United States to New Zealand The process runs through a USDA-accredited veterinarian and the current checklist from New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries. Start at least six months out. A missed vaccination window can delay your pet’s entry well past your own.
