Yes, Uber drivers can accept cash tips. Uber’s own rider help page tells passengers they “can also give cash to your driver instead” of tipping in the app, and the company takes no cut of a tip paid in either form.1Uber Help. How to Tip a Driver The money in your hand is yours in full. What changes with cash is not whether you can accept it, but what you owe on it and how you prove you earned it, because cash tips never touch Uber’s records.
What Uber Allows and What It Doesn’t
Uber’s tipping policy is permissive by design: riders are free to tip and drivers are free to accept, in the app or in person, and Uber does not take a commission on either.2Uber. In-App Tips on Uber
The line the Community Guidelines draw is against pressuring riders. Verbally pushing passengers for tips or posting unauthorized signs asking for them can trigger negative ratings and, in some cases, deactivation.3Uber. Uber Community Guidelines Offering water, a phone charger, or other small amenities is not soliciting. The distinction is between making a rider comfortable and making them feel obligated.
Cash Tips vs. In-App Tips on Your Records
In-app tips ride along with your other earnings. A passenger has up to 30 days after a trip to add or adjust a tip through the app, the website, or their emailed receipt, and the amount hits your linked bank account with your weekly deposit.2Uber. In-App Tips on Uber That creates an automatic paper trail.
Cash tips do not. They never appear on your Uber earnings statement, and they will not show up on any 1099 Uber sends you, because Uber’s forms only capture what moved through its payment system. If you do not write cash tips down, no one else will, and the IRS still expects them on your return.
Reporting Cash Tips as a Self-Employed Driver
Every dollar of cash tips is taxable income. A common mix-up worth clearing up directly: the rule that lets workers skip reporting tips under $20 in a month applies only to employees reporting to an employer. It does not apply to rideshare drivers, who are independent contractors.4Internal Revenue Service. Publication 531 (12/2024), Reporting Tip Income
As a self-employed driver, you report all tip income, cash included, on Schedule C (Form 1040) as part of your business income. There is no minimum. Five dollars in cash tips from a single shift belongs on the return alongside your fares.4Internal Revenue Service. Publication 531 (12/2024), Reporting Tip Income
Skipping cash tips is not a minor omission. The IRS can assess a penalty equal to 50% of the Social Security and Medicare taxes owed on unreported tips, on top of the taxes themselves.4Internal Revenue Service. Publication 531 (12/2024), Reporting Tip Income
The Qualified Tips Deduction for 2025 Through 2028
A federal deduction now lets eligible tipped workers, including certain self-employed individuals, deduct up to $25,000 in qualified tips per year. The deduction runs for tax years 2025 through 2028 and is available whether you itemize or take the standard deduction.5Internal Revenue Service. One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act – Tax Deductions for Working Americans and Seniors
Qualified tips include voluntary cash and in-app tips from customers. The deduction phases out once modified adjusted gross income exceeds $150,000, or $300,000 for joint filers. For a self-employed driver, the deduction cannot exceed net income from the business where the tips were earned, and it is claimed on Schedule 1-A rather than Schedule C.6Internal Revenue Service. One catch: you have to be in an occupation the IRS has listed as one that customarily receives tips. Self-employed workers in a Specified Service Trade or Business under Section 199A are generally excluded, though the IRS has issued transition relief for some. Before you claim the deduction, check the IRS’s published list of qualifying occupations to confirm rideshare driving is covered for your situation.7Internal Revenue Service. Keep a Daily Log of Cash Tips
The IRS expects a daily record of tips received. For a rideshare driver, that log does three practical things: it lets you report accurately at tax time, it supports your estimated payments during the year, and it stands up if the IRS ever asks.8Internal Revenue Service. Tip Recordkeeping and Reporting
At a minimum, record the date you received the tip, the amount, and whether it was cash or in-app. A spreadsheet, notebook, or expense app all work. The IRS provides Form 4070A as a template inside Publication 1244 if you prefer a ready-made format.8Internal Revenue Service. Tip Recordkeeping and Reporting The trick is doing it at the end of each driving session, before the memory of who tipped what fades.
Why Reporting Cash Tips Protects Your Social Security
The self-employment tax you pay on tip income is not just money leaving your account. Part of it buys Social Security credits that determine your eligibility for retirement and disability benefits. In 2026, one credit costs $1,890 in covered earnings, and you can earn up to four credits a year, meaning $7,560 in reported earnings gets you the full four.9Social Security Administration. Social Security Credits
Unreported cash tips do not count. Over a driving career, leaving cash off the return can lower the monthly benefit you eventually collect, because Social Security calculates payments from your average reported earnings across your working years.9Social Security Administration. Social Security Credits Reporting every tip is a legal requirement, and it is also how you protect the benefit you are paying into.
