Lenders cannot see soft pulls on your credit report. When a bank, card issuer, or other creditor requests your file to evaluate a new credit application, the version they receive leaves soft inquiries out entirely. Those entries show up only on the consumer-disclosure copy you see when you check your own report, and neither FICO nor VantageScore counts them in your score.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Inquiry?
Why Soft Inquiries Are Hidden From Lenders
Credit bureaus produce two different versions of your report. The consumer-disclosure version, which you can request for yourself, lists every inquiry logged against your file. The version delivered to a lender who is underwriting a new application does not.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Inquiry? A lender reviewing you for a loan or card has no way to count how many times your credit has been checked softly, by you or by anyone else.
Scoring models follow the same split. FICO and VantageScore both ignore soft inquiries when they calculate your number.2Experian. What Is a Soft Inquiry? You can pull your own report daily, sit through employer background checks, and collect dozens of prescreened mailers without moving your score by a point.
What Counts as a Soft Pull
Soft inquiries come from routine activities that don’t involve you applying for new credit. Recognizing them helps you tell the harmless entries on your report apart from the hard pulls that actually matter to a lender.
- Checking your own credit through a free monitoring service, your bank’s app, or AnnualCreditReport.com.
- Prescreened credit card and insurance offers, where a company screens your file to decide whether to mail you a pre-approved offer.2Experian. What Is a Soft Inquiry?

- Employment background checks. Employers must get your written permission first, and the pull is always classified as soft.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports

One boundary worth flagging: asking your card issuer for a credit-limit increase is not always a soft pull. Some major issuers process the request with only a soft check, while others run a hard inquiry. Ask your issuer before submitting the request if you want to avoid the possibility of a score hit.
What Lenders Do See: Hard Inquiries
Hard inquiries are the other side of the split. When you apply for a mortgage, auto loan, credit card, or personal loan, the lender’s credit check is logged as a hard pull, shared with any other lender who later requests your report, and counted by scoring models. A single hard inquiry usually lowers a FICO score by fewer than five points and a VantageScore by five to ten points, and the effect fades within a few months.7Experian. How Long Do Hard Inquiries Stay on Your Credit Report? FICO only weighs hard inquiries from the past 12 months; VantageScore may look at the full two-year window.
So if a lender is looking at your report and evaluating your history of credit-seeking behavior, they are seeing your hard inquiries. Not the soft ones.
How Long Soft Inquiries Stay on Your Report
Soft inquiries remain on the consumer version of your report for two years before they drop off automatically.4Experian. Hard Inquiry vs. Soft Inquiry: What’s the Difference? Throughout that entire period they stay invisible to lenders and irrelevant to your score. If you request your own report and find a long list of soft pulls from monitoring services, insurers, marketers, and your existing creditors, that is normal, and it carries no consequence for future applications.
If a Pull Is Misclassified as Hard
Occasionally an inquiry that should have been coded soft appears on your report as a hard pull, or a hard inquiry shows up that you never authorized. Either situation is worth disputing, because a misclassified pull can affect your score and an unauthorized one may signal identity theft.
File the dispute directly with the credit bureau — Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion — that shows the inquiry. Explain in writing which inquiry you are challenging and why, and include any supporting documents, such as a letter from the company confirming they only ran a soft pull. The bureau generally has 30 days to investigate and report back. Certified mail with a return receipt gives you proof of delivery. If the bureau does not resolve the matter, you can escalate by filing a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Stopping Promotional Soft Pulls
Soft inquiries don’t hurt you, but if the volume of prescreened credit card and insurance offers bothers you, federal law lets you take your name off the marketing lists the bureaus sell.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports Opt out through OptOutPrescreen.com or by calling 1-888-567-8688.10Federal Trade Commission.
