You can work while waiting for disability benefits, but your monthly earnings need to stay under strict limits or the Social Security Administration will almost certainly deny your claim. For 2026, that limit is $1,690 per month for most applicants and $2,830 for applicants who are statutorily blind.1Social Security Administration. Substantial Gainful Activity Even earnings well below those numbers can raise questions if the work looks inconsistent with the limitations you described in your application, and an initial decision typically takes six to eight months.2Social Security Administration. How Long Does It Take to Get a Decision After I Apply for Disability Benefits
The Substantial Gainful Activity Test
The SSA measures your work against a standard called Substantial Gainful Activity, or SGA. Work is “substantial” if it takes significant physical or mental effort, even part-time work or a job easier than the one you held before. It is “gainful” if you do it for pay or profit, or if it is the kind of work normally done for pay.3Social Security Administration. 20 CFR 404.1572
Each year the SSA sets a dollar threshold. If your countable monthly earnings top that number, the SSA treats you as capable of gainful work and denies the claim on that basis alone. The 2026 amounts are $1,690 for non-blind applicants and $2,830 for statutorily blind applicants.1Social Security Administration. Substantial Gainful Activity One boundary worth knowing: the blind SGA threshold does not apply to Supplemental Security Income claims. If you are blind and applying for SSI, SGA does not factor into your initial eligibility at all.4Social Security Administration. If You Are Disabled or Blind – Supplemental Security Income
Staying under the dollar limit is not the whole story. The SSA also weighs how many hours you work, whether your employer accommodates you with lighter duties or extra breaks, and whether the work itself contradicts the restrictions in your file. If you told the SSA you cannot stand for more than 10 minutes, a job that keeps you on your feet for four-hour shifts undermines your claim regardless of the paycheck.
Working While an SSDI Claim Is Pending
Social Security Disability Insurance requires that you be unable to engage in SGA because of a medical condition expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.5Social Security Administration. SSR 23-1p – Duration Requirement for Disability Earnings above the SGA threshold during the months your application is pending are direct evidence against that requirement, and the SSA will deny on that ground.
Part-time work that stays under $1,690 and lines up with the limitations you described is the safer path. Work that mirrors what you did before your condition worsened, even at reduced hours, invites closer scrutiny.
Working While an SSI Claim Is Pending
SSI is needs-based, so it layers income and resource limits on top of the SGA test. Earnings below SGA can still shrink or eliminate your payment. The SSA excludes the first $20 of most income you receive in a month, then the first $65 of earned income, then half of everything above that.6Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income – SSI Income So someone earning $500 in a month has roughly $207 counted against their SSI, not the full $500. If countable income tops the federal benefit rate, eligibility ends for that month.
Applicants under 22 who regularly attend school get a much larger buffer. The Student Earned Income Exclusion shelters up to $2,410 per month and $9,730 per year in 2026 before the other exclusions kick in.7Social Security Administration. Student Earned Income Exclusion for SSI It is the most generous income protection SSI offers and it is easy to miss.
Deductions That Lower Your Countable Earnings
SGA is measured against countable earnings, not gross pay. Two deductions can move you back under the line.
Impairment-Related Work Expenses
If you pay out of pocket for items or services you need because of your disability in order to work, the SSA subtracts those costs from your gross earnings before applying the SGA test. Qualifying expenses include medications, medical devices, service animals, attendant care for getting ready for work or traveling to work, and modifications to your home or vehicle that make working possible.8Social Security Administration. SSI Spotlight on Impairment-Related Work Expenses A wheelchair used both at home and at work still qualifies. Public transit fares and union dues do not.
The arithmetic can be decisive. Gross earnings of $1,800 minus $200 in qualifying medical supplies and attendant care puts your countable earnings at $1,600, under the $1,690 line.
Employer Subsidies and Special Conditions
If your employer pays you more than the reasonable value of what you actually produce, the SSA treats the difference as a “subsidy” and subtracts it. This often applies when the employer gives you extra breaks, assigns lighter duties, tolerates lower productivity, or provides a job coach. The SSA may send your employer Form SSA-3033 to compare your output against coworkers without a disability doing the same job. A similar deduction, called a “special condition,” applies when a vocational rehabilitation agency or nonprofit job coach supports you. If a coach spends 10 hours a month working with you and you earn $15 an hour, the SSA can subtract $150 from your monthly earnings.
The Unsuccessful Work Attempt Rule
People sometimes try to return to work and find their condition forces them to stop. The SSA has a rule for this. If you worked at or above SGA but stopped or dropped below it within six months because of your impairment, those earnings generally will not count against your claim.9eCFR. 20 CFR 404.1574 – Evaluation Guides if You Are an Employee
You need a clear break between the attempt and any earlier work. The SSA treats prior work as “discontinued” if you were out of work for at least 30 consecutive days, or if your condition forced you into a different type of job or a different employer.9eCFR. 20 CFR 404.1574 – Evaluation Guides if You Are an Employee Attempts of three months or less usually need little more than your own account. Attempts lasting three to six months typically require medical records or an employer statement confirming the job ended because of your disability. Work at SGA levels lasting longer than six months cannot be classified as an unsuccessful attempt no matter why it ended.
Reporting Work While Your Claim Is Pending
You are required to tell the SSA about work activity and earnings promptly while your application is pending. That includes starting or stopping a job, and changes in hours, pay, or duties. The SSA uses Form SSA-821, the Work Activity Report, to gather this information and decide whether the work rises to SGA.10Social Security Administration. Work Activity Report – SSA-821 How you describe the job on that form carries real weight. Spell out every accommodation, every limitation you deal with on the shift, and every way your condition shapes what you can do. Vague answers hurt.
If you are already receiving SSI while a later disability determination is pending, the SSA offers three tools for monthly wage reporting: the myWageReport tool inside your my Social Security account, the SSA Mobile Wage Reporting app for Apple and Android, and a toll-free telephone system.11Social Security Administration. SSI Spotlight on Automated Wage Reporting Tools Reporting during the first six days of the month helps avoid incorrect payments.
If You Earn Too Much
For SSDI applicants, earning above SGA leads to denial. The SSA reads the paycheck as evidence you can work, and that finding is hard to undo unless you can show the work was an unsuccessful attempt or that subsidies and impairment-related expenses drop your countable earnings under the line.
For SSI applicants, exceeding SGA or the program’s other income and resource limits leads to denial or a reduced payment. If you were already getting SSI and did not report changes, the SSA can assess an overpayment and ask for a full refund within 30 days.12Social Security Administration. Understanding Supplemental Security Income Overpayments Overpayments are recoverable even when the error was not your fault, though you can request a waiver if repayment would cause hardship.
Appealing a Denial Based on Your Work
If the SSA denies your claim because it concluded your work activity is SGA, you have 60 days from the date you receive the notice to request reconsideration.13Social Security Administration. Request Reconsideration You can file online or submit Form SSA-561 to your local Social Security office.14Social Security Administration. Request for Reconsideration
Reconsideration is where the deductions above earn their keep. If your gross pay went over $1,690 but impairment-related work expenses or an employer subsidy bring your countable earnings under it, lay that out with documentation. If the work ended within six months because of your condition, gather medical records and an employer statement showing what happened. Initial decisions often skip these adjustments because the applicant did not provide the detail the first time around.
