You generally cannot walk into an IRS office without an appointment. The roughly 360 Taxpayer Assistance Centers around the country run on a scheduled system, and the only regular exception is a handful of Saturdays during filing season when many locations open their doors for walk-in help.1Internal Revenue Service. Here’s What Taxpayers Should Know Before Visiting an IRS Office Show up on any other day without booking ahead and you’ll almost certainly be turned away.
The appointment rule exists because it works. Scheduling ahead lets the IRS assign a representative who handles your kind of issue and pull your account before you arrive, which is why the agency steers routine tasks toward its website and phone lines and reserves in-person slots for things that actually need a person across the desk: liens and levies, audit responses, identity verification, ITIN applications, and payment arrangements.2Internal Revenue Service. The Saturday Walk-In Exception
Many Taxpayer Assistance Centers open for walk-in service on select Saturdays during filing season. In 2026, those dates are February 28, March 28, April 11, April 25, May 30, and June 27, with hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.3Internal Revenue Service. IRS Face-to-Face Saturday Help Not every office participates on every date, so check your local listing before driving over.
On these Saturdays you can get help with almost anything a TAC normally handles: account questions, ITIN renewals, identity theft victim assistance, payments other than cash, refund inquiries, and picking up transcripts or forms.3Internal Revenue Service. How to Book an Appointment Any Other Day
Call 844-545-5640 to schedule.1Internal Revenue Service. If a visit really is warranted, be specific about why. Quote the notice number, name the form, describe the problem plainly. That’s how the local office knows which representative to schedule and what to pull up beforehand. You can opt in to text reminders during the same call, and it’s worth doing: if you arrive more than 15 minutes late without checking in, the IRS may cancel the appointment.2Internal Revenue Service. What to Bring So the Visit Isn’t Wasted
Showing up without the right paperwork is one of the quickest ways to burn an appointment. The representative can’t help if they can’t confirm who you are or see the records tied to your issue.
Two Forms of ID
Bring a valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport) plus at least one additional form of identification from a different category, such as a Social Security card, a utility bill matching the address on your ID, a mortgage statement, a lease, a car title, a voter registration card, or a birth certificate.6Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Letter 5747C Two is the minimum for identity verification appointments. Bringing more won’t hurt.
The Notice and the Records Behind It
Bring the IRS letter or notice that prompted the visit. If your appointment involves a specific tax return, bring a copy of that return along with the supporting W-2s, 1099s, and documentation for any credits claimed. Complete paperwork is what turns one appointment into a resolution instead of a first of two.
Federal Building Security
TACs sit inside federal buildings, so expect a metal detector and bag screening. Weapons, pocket knives with blades longer than 2.5 inches, pepper spray, and anything else prohibited in federal facilities has to stay outside.7Internal Revenue Service. Physical Access Control (PAC) If a pacemaker or medical condition rules out standard screening, you can ask for an alternative and you don’t have to prove the condition.
What a TAC Won’t Do
TAC staff answer account questions, handle basic tax law questions, accept payments, process ITIN applications, and verify identities.8Taxpayer Advocate Service. The Filing Season: How to Get Assistance They will not prepare your tax return. For that, the IRS runs the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program at community sites, which handles free return preparation for people earning $69,000 or less, people with disabilities, and taxpayers with limited English proficiency; the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program covers taxpayers 60 and older.9Internal Revenue Service. TAC employees also don’t give legal advice or represent you in a dispute. They explain your account and your options. If you need someone to advocate for you in an audit or a collection matter, that requires authorizing a tax professional through Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative.10Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2848 A representative can attend the appointment in your place if the signed form is on file and they bring a copy along.
When You Don’t Need to Go at All
A lot of what draws people to a TAC can be done from a laptop. Your IRS Online Account shows balances by tax year, refund status, transcripts, digital copies of notices, and lets you make or schedule payments from a bank account up to 365 days out, set up or change a payment plan, and get an Identity Protection PIN.11Internal Revenue Service. Online Account for Individuals You can also approve a Power of Attorney electronically through the account, which removes one of the more common reasons to book an appointment in the first place.
The main IRS phone line, 800-829-1040, handles payment plans and transcript requests too. And if a notice arrived in the mail, look at it carefully: notices typically include a direct phone number and a return address, and a written response with the requested documentation is often all the IRS wants.2Internal Revenue Service.
