No, you can no longer claim a federal stimulus check. All three rounds of Economic Impact Payments had to be claimed through a federal tax return, and the last deadline, April 15, 2025, for filing a 2021 return and claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit, has passed. The only people still receiving money at this point are those the IRS identified for automatic payments in late 2024 based on 2021 returns already on file. If you never filed a 2021 return before that deadline, the money is no longer available to you outside a few narrow exceptions.
The Deadlines That Have Closed
Federal law gives taxpayers three years from the original filing deadline to submit a return and claim a refund. A return filed before its due date counts as filed on the due date, so the three-year clock runs from the original deadline regardless of when you actually sent the return in.1Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund
That rule sets two hard cutoffs for stimulus money:
- The first and second stimulus payments (up to $1,200 and $600 per eligible adult, from the CARES Act and the Consolidated Appropriations Act) had to be claimed on a 2020 return. The deadline to file that return was May 17, 2024.
- The third stimulus payment (up to $1,400 per eligible person under the American Rescue Plan Act) had to be claimed on a 2021 return. The deadline was April 15, 2025.2Internal Revenue Service. SOI Tax Stats – Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) Statistics
Once these deadlines pass, the IRS has no authority to issue the refund. For the 2021 tax year alone, the agency estimated that more than $1 billion in refunds went unclaimed by over 1.1 million people.3Internal Revenue Service. The Automatic Payments the IRS Sent in Late 2024
There is one group of people who received third-round stimulus money without doing anything in 2024 or 2025. In December 2024, the IRS announced it had identified roughly one million taxpayers who had filed 2021 returns but left the Recovery Rebate Credit line blank or entered $0, even though the agency’s records showed they were eligible. Instead of asking them to file amended returns, the IRS calculated the credit and sent the payments automatically.4Internal Revenue Service. Economic Impact Payments
Most of those payments arrived by late January 2025. The IRS used the banking information from each taxpayer’s 2023 return or mailed a paper check to the address on file. The maximum was $1,400 per person, or up to $2,800 for a married couple filing jointly, plus $1,400 for each qualifying dependent.
This program was limited to people who had already filed a 2021 return. If you never filed one, you were not included, and the April 15, 2025 deadline to file has now passed.
The Narrow Exceptions to the Three-Year Deadline
The IRS recognizes a handful of situations where the three-year refund clock can be extended. None of them create a general do-over for stimulus payments, but they can matter if your circumstances are unusual:1Internal Revenue Service. Time You Can Claim a Credit or Refund
- If you were affected by a presidentially declared disaster, you may have received up to one additional year to claim a refund.
- Service members deployed to designated combat zones or contingency operations get additional time to file, subject to specific requirements.
- If you and the IRS agreed in writing to extend the time limit for assessing tax, you get that agreed-upon period plus six months to claim a credit or refund.
There is no general “reasonable cause” exception. Not knowing about the stimulus, forgetting to file, or losing paperwork does not extend the deadline. If none of the exceptions above fit your situation, the money is no longer recoverable.
How to Confirm What You Actually Received
If you’re unsure whether you ever got the payments, the most reliable place to look is your IRS Online Account. After logging in, you can view your payment history and see the exact amount issued for each round. This is more dependable than digging through old mail.
The IRS also mailed confirmation notices at the time of each payment: Notice 1444 for the first round, Notice 1444-B for the second, and Notice 1444-C for the third. In early 2022, the IRS sent Letter 6475 summarizing the total third-round payments a taxpayer had received, which was the document meant to help people fill in the Recovery Rebate Credit line on their 2021 return.5Internal Revenue Service. 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit – Topic A: General Information
If you can’t get into your online account, you can request a tax transcript by calling the IRS automated line at 800-908-9946 or mailing Form 4506-T. Transcripts requested by mail usually arrive in five to ten calendar days.6Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts
If Your Automatic Payment Was Wrong or Adjusted
Some taxpayers who received the late-2024 automatic payments got less than expected, or received an IRS math error notice adjusting their Recovery Rebate Credit. You have 60 days from the date on the notice to call the IRS and ask that the adjustment be reversed. Within that window, the IRS is required to reverse the change even if you haven’t submitted supporting documentation.
After 60 days, you can still contest the adjustment, but you’ll need documentation showing the amount you claimed was correct. If the IRS disagrees, the dispute can proceed to a statutory notice of deficiency, which gives you the right to petition the U.S. Tax Court. The IRS number for math error notices is 800-829-0922.
State Rebate Programs Are a Separate Question
Several states ran their own inflation relief or tax rebate programs alongside the federal stimulus. Amounts, eligibility rules, and deadlines varied. Some states paid automatically from prior tax filings; others required a separate application. These programs had no connection to your federal Recovery Rebate Credit in either direction.7Internal Revenue Service.
