For almost everyone, the answer is no: you can no longer claim a missed stimulus check. The three-year window to file for the first and second payments closed on May 17, 2024, and the window for the third payment closed on April 15, 2025. The only remaining path is a narrow one for people who were financially disabled during that filing period, an exception in federal tax law that pauses the deadline when a serious medical condition prevents someone from managing their own finances.
Why the Deadlines Are Final
The stimulus payments were built into the tax code as a refundable credit called the Recovery Rebate Credit. The first and second Economic Impact Payments were claimed on a 2020 return; the third was claimed on a 2021 return. Under 26 U.S.C. ยง 6511, a taxpayer has three years from a return’s due date to file and receive a refund.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund After that, the IRS has no legal authority to issue the money, even if you were fully eligible.
The 2020 return’s extended due date was May 17, 2021, which set the final refund date at May 17, 2024.2Taxpayer Advocate Service. Last Chance to Claim the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit The 2021 return was due April 18, 2022, so the last day to claim the third payment was April 15, 2025. Both dates have passed. The IRS has confirmed that all three rounds have been issued and that missed payments had to be claimed through the Recovery Rebate Credit within those windows.3Internal Revenue Service. The same three-year limit applies to amended returns. If you filed a 2020 or 2021 return but left the Recovery Rebate Credit off it, the deadline to correct that through Form 1040-X has also closed, absent the exception below.4Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X
The Financial Disability Exception
Federal law suspends the three-year filing clock for any period when a taxpayer cannot manage their own financial affairs because of a medically determinable physical or mental impairment that either can be expected to last at least 12 continuous months or is expected to result in death.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6511 – Limitations on Credit or Refund – Section: (h) This is the one route that may still be open.
The exception has strict edges. It does not apply if a spouse or anyone else was authorized to handle your financial matters during the same period. It requires medical documentation, generally a physician’s statement establishing the nature of the impairment, when it began, and how long it was expected to continue. And the clock resumes as soon as the disability ends, so anyone who thinks they qualify should file quickly. Delay narrows an already narrow opening.
Which Return To File
If you’re claiming the first or second payment, you file a 2020 Form 1040 (or Form 1040-SR if you’re 65 or older). For the third payment, you file a 2021 return. Use the form and instructions for that specific tax year, not the current year’s version; prior-year forms are available on the IRS website.3Internal Revenue Service. Economic Impact Payments
Even people who normally have no filing requirement because their income is too low must submit a return to claim the credit. The IRS has recommended filing electronically where possible, since tax software calculates the credit for you.6Internal Revenue Service. 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit – Claiming the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit if You Aren’t Required to File a Tax Return If you file on paper, include the medical documentation supporting the financial disability claim with the return.
If you already filed a return for the applicable year and simply left the credit off, the correction goes on Form 1040-X. Amended returns can be filed electronically or by mail, and processing generally takes 8 to 12 weeks, sometimes as long as 16.7Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions
Get the Payment Amount Exactly Right
A late claim depends on entering the correct figure for what you already received, if anything. If IRS records show you were paid $1,400 and you claim $1,400 again, the system rejects the credit automatically. If you received a partial payment, you can only claim the difference. Someone who got $800 of a $1,400 third payment, for example, can claim the remaining $600 on a 2021 return.
The IRS issued notices confirming payment totals. Letter 6475 states the full amount of your third Economic Impact Payment, including any later “plus-up” adjustments.8Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Letter 6475 Letter 6419 covers advance Child Tax Credit payments and is often confused with stimulus records; it is a separate program.9Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Letter 6419 If those letters are no longer in your files, log in to your IRS Online Account and look under Tax Records, where the payment history is listed.3Internal Revenue Service. Entering the wrong number is the most common reason the IRS adjusts or denies the credit, and each adjustment adds weeks of delay.
The Amounts and Who Qualified
For reference in preparing a late return, the three rounds paid different amounts under different rules:
- First payment (CARES Act, spring 2020): up to $1,200 per individual or $2,400 for married couples filing jointly, plus $500 per qualifying child under 17.10United States Committee on Ways and Means. CARES Act: Coronavirus Relief Check Questions Answered
- Second payment (Consolidated Appropriations Act, late 2020): up to $600 per individual or $1,200 for married couples, plus $600 per qualifying child.11U.S. Department of the Treasury. Treasury and IRS Begin Delivering the Second Round of Economic Impact Payments

The first two payments went in full to single filers with adjusted gross income at or below $75,000 and joint filers at or below $150,000, phasing out completely at $99,000 single and $198,000 joint with no children.13Internal Revenue Service. SOI Tax Stats – Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) Statistics The third payment started at the same thresholds but phased out faster, ending at $80,000 single and $160,000 joint. A valid Social Security number was required, dependents could not claim on their own, and nonresident aliens were excluded.14Social Security Administration. The first two rounds paid the child amount only for qualifying children under 17. If You Do Get a Refund, It Can Be Offset
A Recovery Rebate Credit claimed on a return becomes part of your overall refund, and refunds are subject to the Treasury Offset Program. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service can reduce a refund to cover past-due child support, federal agency debts, state income tax obligations, and certain state unemployment compensation debts.15Internal Revenue Service. Reduced Refund If that happens, you receive a notice showing the original amount, how much was taken, and which agency was paid. To find out in advance whether a debt has been submitted for offset, call the Bureau of the Fiscal Service at 800-304-3107.
One thing worth knowing: the stimulus payments themselves were structured as refundable credits, not income. Claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit does not add to your adjusted gross income and does not affect eligibility for means-tested federal benefits like SNAP, Medicaid, or SSI.
