Yes. You can pull a free ChexSystems report online through the company’s Consumer Portal, and federal law entitles you to at least one free copy every twelve months without having to give a reason.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681j – Charges for Certain Disclosures ChexSystems is a specialty consumer reporting agency that tracks checking and savings account history, so what shows up here can decide whether a bank approves your next account application.
What You’ll Need Before You Log In
ChexSystems asks for four pieces of identifying information to find your file and confirm it’s you: full legal name, current mailing address, date of birth, and Social Security number.2ChexSystems. Consumer Disclosure Enter your name and address exactly the way your bank has them on file. Small mismatches — a missing apartment number, a maiden name, an old ZIP — can keep the system from locating your record.
How to Request the Report Online
Go to the ChexSystems Consumer Disclosure page and either log into the Consumer Portal or create an account.2ChexSystems. Consumer Disclosure After you enter your identifying details, the system runs a real-time search of its database and then asks you a short set of multiple-choice identity verification questions pulled from your financial history. Expect prompts about past account relationships or previous addresses.
Answer within the time window the screen gives you. If verification succeeds, the portal generates your disclosure right then as a downloadable PDF. ChexSystems also offers a separate consumer score — a numerical risk score that is distinct from the disclosure itself — and you can request that through the same portal.
If the Online System Can’t Verify You
A failed verification doesn’t close the door. The request shifts to manual review, and ChexSystems mails the report to you instead. Federal law requires the agency to send the disclosure within fifteen days of receiving a valid request.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681j – Charges for Certain Disclosures The mailed copy contains the same information as the online version.
You can also skip the portal entirely:

- Mail: Send a written request with your full name, current address, date of birth, and Social Security number, plus a color copy of your driver’s license or state ID (front and back), a copy of your Social Security card, and proof of your current address dated within the last 90 days (such as a utility bill). When You Qualify for More Than One Free Report a Year
The twelve-month free copy is the baseline. Several situations entitle you to another free report outside that limit. If a bank or credit union denies your account application based on your ChexSystems record, the denial notice must identify ChexSystems as the source and tell you that you have sixty days to request a free copy of the report that was used.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681m – Requirements on Users of Consumer Reports You also qualify for a free report if you are unemployed and plan to look for work within the next sixty days, currently receive public assistance, or believe your file contains errors caused by identity theft.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681j – Charges for Certain Disclosures
What You’ll See in the Report
A ChexSystems disclosure is not a traditional credit report. It focuses on deposit-account history rather than credit cards or loans, and it is laid out in several sections:6ChexSystems. Sample Consumer Disclosure Report
- Reported information: accounts closed with a negative balance, with the reporting bank’s name, the reason for closure (unpaid overdrafts, suspected fraud, and the like), the date of closure, the original amount owed, and whether it has been paid.
- Inquiries viewed by others: banks or credit unions that pulled your file, typically when you applied for a new account.
- Retail information: returned checks reported by merchants or other businesses.
- Check ordering history: a log of when and where checks were ordered under your name.
- Security freeze and fraud alert status: whether a freeze or alert is currently active.
Federal law requires the disclosure to include everything in your file, the sources of that information, and a list of everyone who requested your report — two years back for employment-related inquiries and one year for other inquiries.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681g – Disclosures to Consumers Negative entries generally fall into two broad buckets: account abuse (unpaid fees, overdrafts) and suspected fraud (check fraud, identity-related issues).8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Long Entries Stay — and What Paying Them Does
ChexSystems generally keeps negative entries for five years from the date of the reported incident.9HelpWithMyBank.gov. How Long Does Negative Information Stay on ChexSystems and EWS Reports Paying off a reported debt does not automatically remove the entry. The item typically stays but updates to show a “paid in full” status, which can still help with a bank reviewing your history.
Disputing Something That’s Wrong
If your report lists an account closure you don’t recognize or a debt you already settled, you can dispute it. ChexSystems takes disputes through the Consumer Portal, by phone at 800-428-9623, or by mail.4ChexSystems. Dispute A mailed dispute should include your full name, current address, date of birth, Social Security number, and a clear explanation of which item you are challenging and why.
Once ChexSystems receives the dispute, it must complete a reinvestigation within thirty days. If you submit additional supporting documents during that period, the deadline can extend by up to fifteen extra days.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy Supporting documents are not required to start the process, but items like account statements, a paid-in-full letter, or a police report for fraud cases can strengthen your case.11ChexSystems. Frequently Asked Questions If the investigation finds the information inaccurate or unverifiable, ChexSystems must correct or delete the entry.
