Can I Reschedule My Citizenship Interview? Reasons and Timeline

You can reschedule your citizenship interview, and USCIS will not penalize you for doing so as long as you notify the agency before your appointment date and have a genuine reason.¹ The real danger is not the reschedule itself. It’s failing to show up and then failing to contact USCIS within 30 days, which allows the agency to treat your application as abandoned and close it administratively.²

How to Request a New Date

Start with your appointment notice. It contains the specific instructions USCIS wants you to follow, and those instructions usually point to your myUSCIS online account at my.uscis.gov.¹ Log in, find your scheduled interview, and submit the rescheduling request before the appointment date.

If you cannot use the online portal, or if your interview is less than 12 hours away, call the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833).³ Phone wait times can run long, and USCIS asks applicants to try online tools first.⁴ Have your receipt number, alien registration number, and appointment details ready either way.

Keep proof of the request. Take screenshots of your online submission, save any confirmation emails, and if you call, write down the date, time, and name of the representative you spoke with. USCIS does not have a clearly documented process for confirming receipt of rescheduling requests, so your own records may be the only evidence you asked in time.

Reasons USCIS Will Accept

USCIS evaluates rescheduling requests under a “good cause” standard.⁵ The regulations don’t spell out every qualifying reason, but officers look for circumstances that are genuine, documented, and outside your reasonable control. Situations that usually meet the bar:

Medical emergencies affecting you or an immediate family member. USCIS has said directly that sick applicants should stay home and will be rescheduled without penalty.¹
Death of a spouse, child, parent, or sibling.
Unavoidable work conflicts, such as required travel or an inflexible obligation in a role like emergency services.
Legal obligations like jury duty or a court appearance on the same day.
Sudden caregiving needs for a dependent when no alternative is available.

What generally does not qualify: ordinary inconvenience, feeling unprepared for the civics or English test, or conflicts you could have avoided with reasonable planning. If test readiness is the concern, USCIS already builds in a second chance. If you fail any portion of the test, an officer schedules a re-examination 60 to 90 days after the initial interview.⁵

When USCIS Reschedules for You

Sometimes the cancellation comes from the agency’s side. If your field office closes because of severe weather, a federal holiday, or another emergency, USCIS reschedules automatically and mails a new appointment notice.⁶ You don’t need to do anything.

If the office stays open but weather keeps you from getting there safely, USCIS may still reschedule if you can show that conditions made attendance impossible.⁶ Contact the agency as soon as you can and document road closures, travel advisories, or transit shutdowns.

Evidence to Send With Your Request

You are not required to submit a legal brief, but proof helps. For a medical reason, a doctor’s letter on official letterhead that names the illness or injury, the date it began, and why you cannot attend works well; hospital discharge papers or an urgent care summary also suffice. For a death in the family, a death certificate or obituary that shows the date and your relationship to the deceased. For a work conflict, a letter from your employer, signed by a supervisor or HR, explaining why the absence is unavoidable. For a legal obligation, a copy of the jury summons, subpoena, or court notice.

Attach a copy of your original interview notice so USCIS can find your case file quickly. If you mail documents, send them to the field office listed on your appointment notice and use a method with delivery confirmation.

What Happens If You Miss the Interview

Federal regulations give you 30 days after a missed interview to notify USCIS in writing, explain why you didn’t appear, and ask for a new date. If you do that, USCIS should reschedule you. Miss the interview and let those 30 days pass in silence, and USCIS may deem your application abandoned and close it administratively without deciding whether you qualified for citizenship.²

Reopening a Closed Application

An administrative closure is not always the end. You have one year from the date of closure to submit a written request asking USCIS to reopen the case, and there is no additional filing fee.² The catch matters: USCIS treats the date of your reopening request as the new filing date for eligibility purposes. Your continuous residence, physical presence, and good moral character periods are measured from that new date rather than your original filing date.⁵

Let the full year lapse and the application is permanently abandoned and dismissed without further notice.² You would then have to file a fresh N-400 and pay the full fee again, currently $710 online or $760 by paper.⁷

How a Reschedule Affects Your Timeline

Even one reschedule adds time. USCIS books interviews based on officer availability and field office capacity, so your new date could land weeks or months out depending on the local backlog. That delay can push back a U.S. passport application, plans to vote in an upcoming election, or sponsoring relatives for immigration benefits.

Be cautious about international travel while you wait. Extended trips can raise questions about continuous residence and whether you still meet the residency requirements for naturalization. Watch your USCIS online account and your mail closely; a new interview notice can arrive with only a few weeks of lead time. Missing the rescheduled appointment triggers the same 30-day notification requirement and the same abandonment risk as missing the first one.

A closed application and a denied application are separate paths. If USCIS closes your case for failure to appear, the reopening process above applies. If USCIS denies your application on the merits after an interview, you would look instead at Form I-290B motions or, in cases of long delay after examination, a district court petition under 8 USC 1447 — different problems with different remedies, and worth reviewing with an immigration attorney if that’s where you end up.⁸⁹
