Can I Pick Up My USPS Package at a Distribution Center?

You can’t pick up a USPS package at a distribution center. These facilities are sorting and routing hubs with no retail counter and, in most cases, no public entrance at all.1PostalPro. Service Hubs and Facilities When a package needs to be picked up in person, it goes to the Post Office that serves your delivery address, and that’s where you go to get it.

What a Distribution Center Actually Does

USPS network distribution centers and sectional center facilities exist to move sorted mail between regions. They accept containers, sort them, and push them downstream to local delivery units.1PostalPro. Service Hubs and Facilities Your package passes through one or more of them on its way to you, but there’s no counter to walk up to and no window where a clerk can hand it over. Showing up at one won’t help, and in most cases you won’t get past the door.

The one exception worth flagging: a carrier’s redelivery notice sometimes lists a larger facility rather than a standard Post Office as the pickup location. If your notice says that, go where the notice sends you. Otherwise, your destination is the local Post Office.

Finding the Post Office That Has Your Package

After a missed delivery, USPS brings the package back to the Post Office responsible for your address at the end of the delivery day. The fastest way to confirm which office that is: enter your tracking number into USPS Tracking on usps.com. Once the package is back at the office, the tracking results show the facility name, address, and hours.2USPS. Picking Up Mail that is Being Held at Your Post Office

Pickup hours at the package counter often differ from the general lobby hours, so check the counter times specifically before you drive over.3USPS. MACDILL AFB Post Office

If a carrier attempted delivery and no one was available, you should find a PS Form 3849 redelivery notice. The back of the form lists the specific Post Office holding the package and a barcode you can use as a tracking number.4USPS. PS Form 3849 Redelivery Notice

Lost the notice? You can still pick up the package. Use the Post Office Locator on usps.com: open Filter & Sort, select Pickup Services, choose Pickup Notice Left Mail, and enter your delivery address to see which office holds packages for you. You can also call 1-800-ASK-USPS (1-800-275-8777), staffed Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. EST and Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. EST.2USPS. What to Bring to the Counter

You need valid government-issued photo identification every time. USPS accepts a range of documents, including:

  • State-issued driver’s license or non-driver’s identification card
  • U.S. or foreign passport
  • U.S. military Common Access Card (CAC) or Uniformed Service ID
  • Tribal identification card
  • U.S. certificate of citizenship or naturalization
  • Permanent resident card
  • Matricula Consular (Mexico) or NEXUS card (Canada)5USPS. Acceptable Forms of Identification

Bring your tracking number too. It’s in your shipping confirmation email, your online order details, or on the barcode of the PS Form 3849. Bring the form itself if you have it. It speeds up the counter transaction, but it isn’t required as long as you have your ID and the tracking number.

For accountable mail (certified, registered, or insured), you’ll sign a delivery receipt before the clerk releases the package.6USPS. USPS Mail Requiring a Signature – Accountable Mail Once you sign, the item is considered delivered.

Picking Up for Someone Else

You can pick up another person’s package with your own photo ID plus written authorization from the recipient. The note doesn’t have to be formal: a signed statement on plain paper is enough, and the recipient can also write the authorization directly on the back of the PS Form 3849.2USPS. Sharing a last name and an address doesn’t change this. You still need written authorization or a standing delivery order on file to collect someone else’s accountable mail.2USPS. Picking Up Mail that is Being Held at Your Post Office

If a package is marked Restricted Delivery, USPS will only release it to the addressee or a specifically authorized agent. For repeated pickups by an agent, the addressee files PS Form 3801 (a standing delivery order) at the Post Office or writes to the Postmaster. For a single pickup, the addressee can authorize an agent on the PS Form 3849.7USPS. What is Restricted Delivery

How Long You Have Before It Goes Back

Timing matters, because the hold clock starts on the first delivery attempt, not when you find the notice. After the hold period ends, USPS returns the package to the sender. The window depends on the service:

You’ll usually get a second notice during the hold period, but don’t rely on it. If you know something is waiting, act on it.

Smart Package Lockers

Some Post Office locations have USPS Smart Package Lockers in the lobby. If your package is placed in one, you’ll get an email with a six-digit access code or a QR code. Many locker locations offer 24/7 access. Where the lobby locks after hours, the same QR code opens the lobby door during extended-hours access.9USPS. USPS Smart Package Locker

Lockers run on a shorter clock than counter pickups. You have five calendar days to grab the package before USPS pulls it and moves it to the retail window; two reminder emails go out during that window, and after it closes the access code stops working and you’ll pick up at the counter with ID.9USPS. Alternatives to Going in Person

If a trip to the Post Office isn’t practical, you have a few options.

Schedule a redelivery. You can request redelivery online at usps.com using your tracking or barcode number, or fill out the back of PS Form 3849 and leave it in your mailbox for the carrier.10USPS. Schedule a Redelivery

Sign electronically. USPS Electronic Signature Online (eSOL) works through Informed Delivery, the free dashboard that previews incoming mail. Once you’re enrolled in Informed Delivery, you can opt in to eSOL through your usps.com account preferences and then apply your signature to eligible packages individually through the dashboard.11USPS. USPS Electronic Signature Online

eSOL covers Priority Mail Express, Signature Confirmation, and insured items over $500. The timing is strict: you have to apply the signature before the package receives its Out for Delivery scan. If you already have a redelivery notice, you can still use eSOL, but you need to apply it before scheduling the redelivery, and once applied the signature is final.11USPS. USPS Electronic Signature Online Business Informed Delivery accounts can’t use eSOL; it’s a residential tool.

One boundary worth knowing: if you want a package rerouted to a Post Office for pickup before delivery is attempted, only the sender or their authorized representative can request USPS Package Intercept.12USPS. Package Intercept – Stop Delivery of Letter or Package As the recipient, you can’t initiate it yourself.
