Can I Mail a Tax Extension on April 15? Postmark Rules and Form 4868

You can mail a tax extension on April 15 and it counts as filed on time, provided the envelope carries a U.S. Postal Service postmark dated April 15 or earlier. Federal law treats the postmark date as your filing date, so even if Form 4868 doesn’t reach the IRS for another week, you’re on time. The extension moves your filing deadline to October 15, but any tax you owe is still due April 15, and interest starts running the next day.

The Postmark Rule That Makes It Work

The legal basis is 26 U.S.C. ยง 7502, the “timely mailed, timely filed” rule. When you deposit a tax document in the U.S. mail with proper postage and address, the postmark date is treated as the date the IRS received it.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 7502 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing and Paying The rule covers extension requests, returns, and payments.

The safest move on deadline day is to walk into a post office and have a clerk apply a physical USPS postmark. Metered postage from an office mailroom is riskier. If the envelope arrives late, the IRS can question a metered date, and you’d need to prove when the letter actually went into the mail. A clerk’s stamp shuts that argument down.

For a paper trail, ask for a certificate of mailing, or send the envelope certified with a return receipt. That receipt is what protects you if the IRS later claims your extension arrived late or the envelope goes missing entirely.

Private Carriers Also Qualify โ€” But Only Certain Services

The Postal Service isn’t your only option. The IRS designates specific services from FedEx, UPS, and DHL that get the same timely-filing protection.2Internal Revenue Service. Private Delivery Services (PDS) The list is narrow. FedEx Priority Overnight qualifies; FedEx Ground does not. If you’re planning to use a private carrier on April 15, confirm your service level is on the approved list before you hand over the package, and keep the written proof of the shipping date.

What You Need on Form 4868

Form 4868 is a single-page IRS form that grants an automatic six-month extension.3Internal Revenue Service. About Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return No explanation or justification is required. Download it from irs.gov and print it at home.

The form asks for your name, address, and Social Security number, plus your spouse’s information if you file jointly. Then you estimate three figures: your total tax liability for the year, the total you’ve already paid through withholding or estimated payments, and the balance due.4Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return The numbers don’t have to be exact to the penny, but a wildly inaccurate estimate can give the IRS grounds to invalidate the extension.

Where to Mail It

The correct address depends on your state of residence and whether you’re enclosing a payment. The current version of Form 4868 lists every address, and you should check that document before you seal the envelope.5Internal Revenue Service. If you’re sending a payment, most filers use one of two IRS payment processing centers: P.O. Box 1302 in Charlotte, NC, or P.O. Box 931300 in Louisville, KY. Without a payment, the form goes to a service center in Austin, TX; Kansas City, MO; or Ogden, UT, again depending on where you live. Sending to the wrong address won’t automatically void your extension, but it can add weeks of processing delay.

Payment Is Still Due April 15

An extension to file is not an extension to pay. This is the piece most people miss. If you owe tax, the IRS expects payment by April 15 whether you’ve filed a return, an extension, or nothing at all.6Internal Revenue Service. When to File Any unpaid balance after that date accrues both penalties and interest.

When mailing a check or money order with Form 4868, make it payable to “United States Treasury” rather than the IRS. Write your Social Security number, the tax year, and “Form 4868” on the memo line so the payment gets credited correctly if it becomes separated from the form during processing.4Internal Revenue Service. File the Extension Even If You Can’t Pay

Mailing Form 4868 is worth the trip to the post office even when you can’t cover the balance, because the penalty for failing to file is ten times the penalty for failing to pay.

  • Failure to file: 5% of unpaid taxes per month or partial month, capped at 25%. If a return is more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is the lesser of $525 or 100% of the tax owed.7Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 653, IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest Charges
  • Failure to pay: 0.5% of unpaid taxes per month or partial month, capped at 25%.8Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty
  • Interest: Charged on unpaid balances at a rate that adjusts quarterly. For the first half of 2026, the individual underpayment rate is 7% for January through March and 6% for April through June.9Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates

Mailing Form 4868 on April 15 eliminates the 5%-per-month failure-to-file penalty entirely, even if you owe money you can’t yet pay. You’ll still owe the smaller failure-to-pay penalty and interest on the balance, but that’s a fraction of what you’d face without the extension.

Faster Options on Deadline Day

You don’t have to mail paper. Form 4868 can be filed electronically through IRS Free File or through tax software, and an e-filed extension is timestamped when submitted, so a submission at 11:55 p.m. on April 15 is on time.10Internal Revenue Service. File an Extension Through IRS Free File

There’s also a shortcut that skips the form entirely. Make a payment through IRS Direct Pay and select “extension” as the payment reason; the payment itself counts as your extension request, and no separate form is required.11Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay Help The same works for extension payments made by credit card, debit card, or digital wallet.12Internal Revenue Service. After You Mail It

Don’t wait for a confirmation letter. The IRS generally doesn’t acknowledge extension requests it accepts. Silence means it went through, and your new filing deadline is October 15.4Internal Revenue Service. Get an Extension to File Your Tax Return

If something is wrong โ€” a mismatched Social Security number, missing information โ€” the IRS will send a notice explaining the problem and how to fix it. This is where your mailing receipt earns its keep. If the IRS ever claims your extension arrived late, a certified mail receipt or certificate of mailing is the proof that you sent it on time.

Two Situations Worth Flagging

U.S. Citizens Living Abroad

A U.S. citizen or resident alien living and working outside the country on April 15 gets an automatic two-month extension to file, with no form required. The filing deadline moves to June 15, and Form 4868 can extend it another four months to October 15.13Internal Revenue Service. Automatic 2-Month Extension of Time to File The same rule covers military personnel stationed outside the U.S. Payment is still due April 15, and interest accrues from that date on any unpaid balance. Attach a statement to your return explaining that you qualified.

State Returns

A federal extension doesn’t automatically cover your state income tax return in every state. Most states grant their own six-month extension, and many will honor the federal extension or accept a copy of Form 4868 without extra paperwork. Some require a state-specific extension form filed by the state deadline. If your state has an income tax, check the state tax agency’s website to see whether additional paperwork is needed and whether the state payment deadline matches the federal one.
