Can I Go to a USCIS Biometrics Appointment Early?

Going to a USCIS biometrics appointment early is allowed under USCIS policy, which states an applicant “may appear at the ASC before the scheduled date.”¹ Whether the Application Support Center actually processes you that day is a different question, and it comes down to the center’s capacity and staffing. If early attendance matters to you, you have two real options: walk in and hope, or reschedule to an earlier date through your USCIS online account.

Walking In Before Your Scheduled Date

Policy permits it. Practice varies. Some ASCs routinely take early walk-ins; others turn people away when the waiting area is full. USCIS does not guarantee you’ll be seen, so treat an early visit as something that usually works but isn’t a sure thing.

A few things improve your odds:

Arrive early in the morning. Waiting areas fill up as the day goes on.
Bring your printed appointment notice (Form I-797C) and a valid, unexpired photo ID such as a Green Card, passport, or driver’s license.¹
Be prepared to come back on your original date. If the ASC can’t fit you in, your scheduled appointment remains valid.

There is no penalty for trying and being turned away. You simply return on the date your notice lists.

Rescheduling to an Earlier Date Online

If you don’t want to gamble on capacity, you can formally move your appointment to an earlier available slot. USCIS now directs applicants to reschedule through their online account at my.uscis.gov rather than by phone.² The process:

Log in or create an account at my.uscis.gov.
Select the biometric rescheduling option and follow the prompts to pick a new date, time, or location.
Choose email or text confirmation.
Print the new notice. Electronic copies on a phone are not accepted.

You must submit the request before the date and time of your original appointment, and you need to show “good cause” for the change.² The online tool won’t work if your appointment is less than 12 hours away, if you’ve already rescheduled twice, or if the appointment has already passed.³ Call the USCIS Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283 in those situations.

What Counts as Good Cause

USCIS defines good cause as a sufficient reason for being unable to appear on the scheduled date. The Policy Manual gives these examples:¹

Illness or medical appointment, including hospitalization
Previously planned travel booked before the notice arrived
Significant life events such as a wedding, funeral, or graduation
Transportation problems getting to the ASC
Inability to take time off from work or caregiving duties
An appointment notice that arrived late or never arrived

The list is illustrative, not exhaustive, and USCIS has discretion to accept other reasons. Wanting to finish sooner for convenience isn’t listed, so if the tool asks for a reason, one of the categories above will need to fit your situation. Most reasonable explanations are accepted in practice.

Don’t Skip the Appointment Instead

If early attendance is on your mind because the scheduled date is inconvenient, reschedule; don’t simply not show up. USCIS treats a missed biometrics appointment as abandonment of the underlying application and will deny it, unless a rescheduling request or change-of-address notice was received by the appointment time.¹ When an application is denied for abandonment, the priority date and processing date can’t be transferred to a future filing.

If you’ve already missed an appointment, call the Contact Center as soon as possible. The online tool won’t accept a missed-appointment reschedule, but the Contact Center can.³ USCIS may excuse the miss while the case is still pending, weighing how much time has passed, whether you had a sufficient reason, and whether denial would cause undue hardship or expense.¹ The shorter the gap, the better.

Asylum applicants who filed Form I-589 face different rules. USCIS won’t deny an asylum application for abandonment after a missed biometrics appointment; instead, USCIS may dismiss it if the applicant is in lawful status, or refer it to an immigration judge if not.¹

What to Bring, Early Visit or Not

Your appointment notice (Form I-797C), printed. If you rescheduled and have multiple notices, bring all of them.
A valid, unexpired photo ID: Green Card, passport, or driver’s license.¹

You don’t need a check or money order. Since April 1, 2024, USCIS no longer charges a separate biometrics services fee; the cost is built into the filing fee.⁴

If English is a challenge, a family member, attorney, or accredited representative may accompany you for language assistance.² Whether your phone can come inside varies by facility; USCIS leaves it to each office, so keep yours silenced if allowed and off while you’re being served. Photography and recording are prohibited at all USCIS offices except naturalization ceremonies.⁵

What the Visit Itself Looks Like

The appointment is short. You check in at the front desk, staff verify your identity and notice, and a technician then collects fingerprints digitally, takes a photograph, and captures a digital signature. Most people are in and out within 30 minutes, and most of that time is waiting.

Children under 14 may attend but aren’t required to sign; a parent or legal guardian signs on the child’s behalf.²
