You cannot get a W-2 from Social Security online. The my Social Security account at ssa.gov/myaccount shows only yearly earnings totals, not the wage-and-tax breakdown that appears on an actual W-2. To pull itemized W-2 data from the Social Security Administration, you have to mail in Form SSA-7050-F4, pay a fee starting at $61, and wait up to 120 days. For most people, a free IRS wage and income transcript is faster and does the job.
What My Social Security Shows You
Logging into my Social Security gives you a summary of annual earnings going back to your first year of work. Each year appears as a single total for wages and self-employment income the SSA has on file, drawn from employer wage reports the agency processes each year to calculate future retirement and disability benefits.1Social Security Administration. Review Record of Earnings
Those totals are useful for spotting errors in your earnings history or getting a rough picture of your income, but they leave out what most people actually need from a W-2: federal tax withheld, Social Security wages, Medicare wages, and any state or local tax information. If yearly totals are all you need and you don’t need them certified, the online view is free.2Social Security Administration. Request for Social Security Earnings Information Form SSA-7050-F4
