You can get your 1098 form online in one of two places: the website of whoever issued it, or the IRS’s own transcript tool as a backup. Mortgage lenders, student loan servicers, colleges, and charities that received vehicle donations post these documents to a secure account portal by early February each year. If that portal is unavailable or the issuer is unresponsive, the IRS will show you what was reported under your Social Security number through its Individual Online Account.
Know Which 1098 You Need First
“Form 1098” is a family of documents, and each one comes from a different issuer. You won’t find them all in one place.
- Form 1098 reports mortgage interest and comes from your mortgage lender when you paid more than $600 in interest during the year.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6050H – Returns Relating to Mortgage Interest Received in Trade or Business From Individuals
- Form 1098-E reports student loan interest and comes from your loan servicer when you paid $600 or more.2Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1098-E, Student Loan Interest Statement
- Form 1098-T reports tuition and comes from your college or university.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6050S – Returns Relating to Higher Education Tuition and Related Expenses
- Form 1098-C reports a donated car, boat, or airplane worth more than $500 and comes from the charity.4Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1098-C, Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes
Once you know which form applies, go to that issuer’s website. If your mortgage was sold or transferred to a new servicer partway through the year, expect two 1098s covering the two halves; check both portals.
Download It From the Issuer’s Portal
This is the fastest route, and nearly every major lender, servicer, and school offers it. To log in you’ll need your Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number and whatever account credentials you set up with that institution.5Internal Revenue Service. How to Register for IRS Online Self-Help Tools If you’ve never made an online account with that issuer, expect a short registration that includes multi-factor authentication, usually a code texted or emailed to you.
Once you’re in, look for a section labeled “Tax Documents,” “Tax Center,” or “Statements.” The wording varies. It’s almost always tucked under account settings or a documents menu rather than the main dashboard. Pick the tax year, and the form downloads as a PDF. Save it to a secure folder. The downloaded PDF is fully acceptable for electronic filing.
Turn On Electronic Delivery If You Don’t See It
Here’s a detail that catches a lot of people out. Many issuers won’t post your 1098 to the portal at all unless you’ve specifically consented to electronic delivery. Federal rules require them to get your affirmative consent before replacing the paper copy with a digital one.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1098-E and 1098-T (2025) If you never flipped that switch, the issuer likely mailed a paper copy and skipped the upload.
Look in your account preferences or communication settings for an option to receive tax documents electronically. Turning it on now means future forms show up in your portal automatically, and usually faster than mail.
When to Expect the Form
For the 2025 tax year, issuers must furnish 1098 forms to you by February 2, 2026. The statutory deadline is January 31, but because that date falls on a weekend, it shifts to the next business day.7Internal Revenue Service. First Quarter – Tax Calendar Electronic forms usually appear in your portal on or before that date. Paper copies arrive around the same time, though postal delays can push mailed delivery into mid-February.
Don’t panic on February 1 if your form isn’t there yet. Institutions often upload in batches during the final days before the deadline. Give it until mid-February before contacting the issuer.
Pull It From the IRS as a Backup
When an issuer’s portal is down, the company has closed, or you simply can’t track down the form, the IRS itself has the data. Its online transcript tool lets you request a Wage and Income Transcript, which lists every information return filed under your taxpayer ID for a given year, 1098s included.8Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them
You get to it through your Individual Online Account at irs.gov. If you don’t already have one, you’ll verify your identity through ID.me by uploading a photo ID; the self-service option takes about 10 minutes.9Internal Revenue Service. One timing catch: current-year 1098 data generally doesn’t appear on IRS transcripts until the first week of February, and some filings show up later than that.8Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them If you check too early and see “No Record of Return Filed,” the data just hasn’t populated. Try again in a week or two. Can’t create an online account? Call 800-908-9946 and request a transcript by mail. It arrives within five to ten business days.
If the Form Has Errors or Never Comes
Mistakes happen. A lender might report the wrong interest, or a school might list incorrect tuition. If the numbers don’t match your own records, contact the issuer directly. For mortgage interest, call the lender’s customer service line and request a corrected Form 1098. For tuition, reach out to your school’s bursar or financial aid office. The issuer will file an updated return with the IRS and send you a new copy marked “CORRECTED.”10Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1098
Don’t file using numbers you know are wrong just to avoid the hassle. A corrected form now beats an IRS mismatch notice later.
You also don’t technically need the physical or digital 1098 to claim a deduction or credit. The form is an information return the IRS uses for matching; your right to a deduction comes from the payments you actually made. If your issuer is unresponsive, closed, or just slow, you can file using your own records. Monthly mortgage statements or a year-end summary show interest paid. Servicer payment histories cover student loan interest. School billing statements document tuition. The IRS Wage and Income Transcript is another backup that shows whatever was reported.9Internal Revenue Service. Get Your Tax Records and Transcripts
Just keep your numbers aligned with what the issuer reports. If the IRS receives a 1098 showing $8,000 in interest and you claim $12,000, expect a letter.
