Can I Get a U.S. Passport in a Month? Mail, Agencies, Couriers

You can get a passport in a month. The Department of State’s expedited processing currently takes two to three weeks from the time your application reaches a passport agency, which fits comfortably inside a 30-day window if you apply promptly and pay for fast shipping.1U.S. Department of State. Processing Times for U.S. Passports If your trip is closer than that, a separate urgent travel tier at regional passport agencies can issue one in days.2U.S. Department of State. Which Path Fits Your Timeline

Routine processing currently runs four to six weeks and won’t reliably clear a 30-day deadline. Expedited processing runs two to three weeks.1U.S. Department of State. Processing Times for U.S. Passports Both clocks start when your application reaches a passport agency or center, not when you mail it, so add postal transit each way unless you pay for overnight service.

The dividing line is 14 calendar days before departure. With more than that, expedited processing by mail is the right track. With less, or if you need a foreign visa within 28 calendar days, you qualify for an in-person urgent travel appointment at a regional passport agency.2U.S. Department of State. Expedited Processing by Mail

Expedited service is the ordinary way people get a passport inside a month. You submit at an acceptance facility or by mail, pay an extra fee, and the Department of State moves your application ahead of routine ones. The accelerated track is authorized under 22 CFR 51.56.3eCFR. 22 CFR 51.56 – Expedited Passport Processing

For a first-time adult passport book with expedited service as of February 2026, the fees are:

  • Application fee: $130
  • Acceptance facility fee: $35
  • Expedited processing fee: $60
  • 1-3 day delivery: $22.05

That comes to roughly $247, and you should budget separately for overnight shipping on the way in if you want to shave off transit days.4U.S. Department of State. Passport Fees The 1-3 day return delivery is available for passport books only. Write “EXPEDITE” on the outside of your mailing envelope so the processing center routes it correctly.

If you’re eligible to renew by mail using Form DS-82, expedited renewal is the fastest option overall because you skip the acceptance facility. You qualify if your most recent passport is undamaged, was never reported lost or stolen, was issued within the last 15 years, and was issued when you were 16 or older.5U.S. Department of State. Renew Your Passport by Mail The online renewal option only offers routine processing and asks for at least six weeks before travel, so it doesn’t help on a one-month deadline.6U.S. Department of State. Urgent Travel Appointments at Passport Agencies

Regional passport agencies are different from the post offices and libraries that act as acceptance facilities. They handle applications on-site and can issue a passport during your visit or within a few days.2U.S. Department of State. Make an Appointment at a Passport Agency or Center

How you book depends on whether you’ve already applied:

  • If you haven’t applied yet, use the Department of State’s Online Passport Appointment System to check eligibility and reserve a slot. Identity verification uses an email code and a text message code.
  • If you’ve already applied and are waiting, call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778. Representatives are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern, and weekends from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Appointments fill quickly in peak travel months, and the Department of State makes no guarantee one will be available. Bring your completed application, citizenship evidence, photo, identification, and printed proof of your upcoming international travel (a flight itinerary, cruise reservation, or hotel booking with your name and departure date). Without that proof, the agency won’t process your application on the urgent tier.

What You Need to Apply

The document list is the same whichever speed you use. Assemble everything before you submit, because a missing piece can pause your file long enough to blow the deadline.

The Right Form

First-time applicants and anyone whose previous passport was lost, stolen, or damaged use Form DS-11 and apply in person at an acceptance facility or passport agency. Eligible renewals use Form DS-82 by mail. If your name has changed since your last passport, include a marriage certificate or court order showing the change.5U.S. Department of State. Citizenship Evidence

You need to prove U.S. citizenship. The usual documents are an original or certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate (issued by a city, county, or state, with the registrar’s signature and a raised seal), a Certificate of Naturalization, or a previously issued U.S. passport. Originals mail with your application and come back separately after processing.

Photo and Identification

Your passport photo must be 2 by 2 inches, in color against a white or off-white background, and no more than six months old. Glasses aren’t allowed unless you attach a signed doctor’s note explaining a medical reason.7U.S. Department of State. U.S. Passport Photos Keep a neutral expression with both eyes open and skip uniforms. Most pharmacies and shipping stores take a compliant photo for a few dollars.

You’ll also submit a clear photocopy of a valid, current government-issued photo ID showing your face and signature, such as a driver’s license. Your application requires a Social Security number, and providing an incorrect one can trigger a $500 penalty per application.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6039E – Information Concerning Resident Status

If the Passport Is for a Child

A minor’s application adds coordination that can eat your timeline. Both parents or legal guardians must approve and appear in person with the child.9U.S. Embassy & Consulates. DS-11 / DS-3053 – Wizard Results When one parent can’t attend, the absent parent completes Form DS-3053 (Statement of Consent) and has it notarized. If the other parent can’t be located, Form DS-5525 (Statement of Exigent/Special Family Circumstances) takes its place, with more paperwork and more potential for delay.

For applicants aged 16 and 17, one parent’s presence is generally enough, though the absent parent may need to send a signed statement with a copy of their ID. Passports issued under age 16 are valid five years; those issued at 16 or 17 are valid ten.10USAGov. Get a Passport for a Minor Under 18 Start the consent step the same day you decide to travel.

Life-or-Death Emergencies

A separate emergency tier exists for something more serious than a tight schedule. You may qualify if you need to travel abroad within the next two weeks because an immediate family member outside the United States has died, is dying, or has a life-threatening illness or injury.11U.S. Department of State. Get a Passport if You Have a Life-or-Death Emergency Immediate family is defined narrowly here: parent or legal guardian, child, spouse, sibling, or grandparent. Aunts, uncles, and cousins do not qualify, and traveling for your own medical treatment does not qualify.

Documentation is required: a death certificate, a mortuary statement, or a letter on hospital letterhead signed by a doctor describing the condition. Documents not in English need a professional translation. Call 1-877-487-2778 to request this appointment.

What Passport Couriers Actually Do

Companies advertising 24-hour passport service are private businesses, not part of the Department of State. Some are registered with the Department, but registration is not endorsement, and the Department of State states plainly that using a courier will not get your passport faster than applying directly at a passport agency.12U.S. Department of State. Courier and Expeditor Companies

What couriers sell is convenience: handling paperwork, standing in line, and navigating the process for you at a premium above the government fees. The Department of State takes no responsibility if a courier loses or damages your documents and won’t mediate disputes with a courier company. Be wary of websites using logos that resemble official seals, and treat any request to pay for an appointment as a fraud signal, since appointments themselves are free.

Tracking Your Application

Once you’ve submitted, you can check status online with your last name, date of birth, and the last four digits of your Social Security number. It can take up to two weeks from the day you apply before your status shows as “In Process” at a passport agency, which reflects mail transit and intake rather than a problem.13U.S. Department of State. Check Your Application Status

Watch for the status “Additional Information Needed.” That means the agency mailed or emailed you a request, and your processing clock pauses until you respond. You have 90 days before the application is abandoned. If you’re up against a deadline and your status isn’t moving, call the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-487-2778.
