You can get a loan with a 560 credit score, but your realistic options narrow to subprime personal loans, subprime auto financing, an FHA-backed mortgage with a larger down payment, and small-dollar payday alternative loans from a federal credit union. A 560 sits in the subprime range on the FICO scale, so lenders price in extra risk through higher rates, origination fees, and stricter terms. Approval is possible; cheap credit is not.
Personal Loans
Unsecured personal loans are the most straightforward option at this credit level. Several online lenders work specifically with subprime borrowers and weigh income stability and employment history alongside the score itself. You won’t pledge any property, but you’ll pay for that convenience with higher rates and lower borrowing limits.
Secured personal loans are easier to qualify for and usually carry a lower rate for the same amount. You pledge a savings account, a certificate of deposit, or a vehicle title, and the lender can take that asset if you stop paying. If an unsecured application is coming back as a denial or at the top of the rate range, a secured loan is often the next move.
Auto Loans at 560
Subprime auto financing is one of the more accessible categories at this score. Specialized finance companies and “buy here, pay here” dealerships focus on the vehicle’s value and your current income more than the credit history alone. Double-digit APRs are standard, and most lenders will ask for a larger down payment to offset their risk.
The bigger danger at the dealership is the add-ons. Documentation fees, extended warranties, and gap insurance can inflate the amount financed well beyond the price of the car. Read every line of the financing agreement before signing, and compare the total cost over the full term rather than fixating on the monthly payment.
FHA Mortgages
A 560 keeps you inside FHA territory, but just barely. The Federal Housing Administration allows borrowers with scores between 500 and 579 to qualify with a minimum 10% down payment; at 580 and above, the minimum drops to 3.5%.1U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Does FHA Require a Minimum Credit Score and How Is It Determined On a $200,000 home, that’s at least $20,000 at closing.
The FHA sets the floor, but individual lenders set their own minimums on top of it. Many FHA-approved lenders won’t go below 580, and some won’t go below 620. Finding one willing to work with a 560 takes legwork, and credit unions and smaller community banks tend to be more flexible than large national lenders. In most cases you’ll also pay mortgage insurance premiums for the life of the loan.
Payday Alternative Loans From a Credit Union
Federal credit unions offer a product designed for members with low scores: payday alternative loans, or PALs. PALs I let you borrow $200 to $1,000 with a repayment period of one to six months. PALs II raise the ceiling to $2,000 with repayment terms up to 12 months.2eCFR. 12 CFR 701.21 – Loans to Members and Lines of Credit to Members Interest is capped by federal regulation at 1,000 basis points above the board-set maximum, which keeps PALs far cheaper than payday or title loans.
The amounts are small, but for a few hundred dollars to cover an emergency, a PAL is one of the least expensive options available at a 560. You’ll need to be a credit union member, which usually means opening a share account with a modest deposit.
Adding a Co-signer
A co-signer with good credit can push a borderline application into approval and often lowers the rate as well. Most lenders look for co-signers with scores of 670 or higher plus enough income to cover the payments. The exposure runs in both directions: late payments damage both credit files, and if you default, the lender can pursue the co-signer for the full balance. Treat the ask seriously.
What These Loans Cost
Personal loan APRs at this credit level frequently land between 25% and 36%. On a $5,000 loan at 30% over three years, interest alone runs roughly $2,600, more than half the amount borrowed.
Origination fees are common and usually run from 1% to 10% of the loan amount, deducted from the proceeds before the money hits your account. A $5,000 loan with a 5% origination fee puts $4,750 in your pocket while you still repay $5,000 plus interest. Federal law requires lenders to disclose the APR, total finance charge, and payment schedule in writing before you finalize the agreement.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1601 – Congressional Findings and Declaration of Purpose Those disclosures are the clearest picture of what the loan actually costs.
Repayment terms on subprime personal loans typically range from 12 to 60 months. Shorter terms mean higher monthly payments and less total interest. Many lenders knock a small amount off the rate for automatic payments. Once a payment goes 30 days past due, the lender can report it to the credit bureaus, which is the last thing a 560-score borrower needs.4TransUnion. How Long Do Late Payments Stay on Your Credit Report
Your debt-to-income ratio carries extra weight when your credit score is low. Most conventional lenders prefer DTI below 43%; subprime lenders may tolerate a bit more, but above 50% approval gets hard regardless of other factors. Paying down a credit card before you apply can meaningfully improve your odds.
If You’re in the Military
Active-duty servicemembers, their spouses, and certain dependents are shielded by the Military Lending Act. The law caps the Military Annual Percentage Rate at 36% on most consumer loans, including payday loans, auto title loans, and certain installment loans. The cap includes interest, finance charges, credit insurance premiums, and most fees, so lenders can’t pile on extras to work around it.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Loans to Avoid
Car Title Loans
Title loans are marketed heavily to subprime borrowers and are almost always a bad deal. The typical monthly finance charge is around 25%, which translates to an APR near 300%. If you can’t repay on time, the lender rolls the loan over with new fees stacked on. Default means losing your vehicle, and in some states the lender keeps every dollar from the sale even if the car is worth more than the balance.6Federal Trade Commission. What To Know About Payday and Car Title Loans Title lending is prohibited in roughly two-thirds of states; where it’s legal, it remains one of the most expensive forms of credit available.
Advance-Fee Scams
Scammers target subprime borrowers because they know you’re struggling to qualify elsewhere. The pattern: an ad promises guaranteed approval regardless of credit, you apply, they say you’re approved, and then they ask for an upfront payment labeled as a processing fee, insurance, or application fee before releasing the funds. Once you pay, the money and the “lender” vanish. Legitimate lenders don’t guarantee approval before reviewing your finances, and it is illegal for a telemarketer to demand upfront payment before delivering a loan.7Federal Trade Commission. What You’ll Need to Apply
Documents vary by lender, but the core list is consistent:
- Government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport.
- Proof of income: two to four recent pay stubs, or two years of tax returns if you’re self-employed.
- Bank statements, usually three months, which lenders use to verify cash flow.
- Social Security number for the credit check.
- Your rent or mortgage payment amount, used to calculate DTI.
Before submitting a full application, check whether you pre-qualify. Many online lenders show estimated rates and terms using a soft credit pull that doesn’t affect your score. Pre-qualification isn’t an approval, but it lets you compare offers without triggering hard inquiries. Save the hard pulls for the lender you actually want to borrow from.
Protecting Your Score While You Shop
Each hard credit inquiry can knock your score down by about five points. At 560, a few unnecessary inquiries can push you below a lender’s cutoff. Most credit scoring models treat multiple inquiries for the same auto loan or mortgage within a 14- to 45-day window as a single inquiry, so rate-shop those within a tight window. That treatment doesn’t always apply to personal loan inquiries, so be deliberate about how many full applications you file. And keep every current bill paid on time while you shop; at 560, another late payment on your file hurts far more than it would at 750.
