Can I Get a Copy of My 1099-R Online: Download, Timing, and Transcripts

You can usually get a copy of your 1099-R online by logging into the website of whoever paid the distribution and downloading it from their tax document center. If that route is closed, the IRS keeps the same data in a Wage and Income Transcript covering the current year and the nine years before it.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them Which portal you use depends on who sent the money.

Where Your 1099-R Lives Online

The payer is always the first stop. Banks, brokerages, and investment firms that hold IRAs, 401(k) assets, and annuities post 1099-R forms to their online tax document centers each January. Sign in to the account that held the money and look for a section labeled Tax Documents, Tax Center, or Statements. Most large custodians keep several prior years of forms available for download.

Federal civilian retirees get their form from the Office of Personnel Management. Sign in to OPM Retirement Services Online and choose the 1099-R Tax Form option from the menu. The same portal lets you request a paper copy by mail if you’d rather have one.2U.S. Office of Personnel Management. Get Your 1099-R Tax Form

Military retirees pull their 1099-R from the Defense Finance and Accounting Service. The fastest path is myPay, where the form can be viewed and printed as soon as it’s issued.3Defense Finance and Accounting Service. Getting Your 1099-R

If your distribution came from a former employer’s 401(k) or 403(b), the plan’s recordkeeper issues the form, not your old employer’s HR department. Companies commonly use recordkeepers such as Fidelity, Empower, or TIAA, so log into the recordkeeper’s site. If you’re not sure which company that is, an old account statement or a call to your former employer’s benefits office will tell you.

One boundary worth flagging: Social Security benefits are not reported on a 1099-R. The Social Security Administration issues its own form, the SSA-1099, and you retrieve it from a my Social Security account rather than searching for a 1099-R.4Social Security Administration. When the Form Actually Shows Up

Payers must furnish 1099-R forms by January 31 of the year after the distribution.5Internal Revenue Service. Publication 1099 General Instructions for Certain Information Returns In practice, electronic copies usually appear in the portal a few days before that deadline, and many payers don’t finish their reporting until mid-to-late January. If the form still isn’t there by the first week of February, contact the payer directly before assuming it’s lost.6Internal Revenue Service. Signing In and Downloading Safely

Every retirement account portal will ask you to verify your identity. That means your username and password at a minimum, and almost always a one-time code sent by text or email through multi-factor authentication.

If you’ve forgotten your credentials, the “forgot password” link will walk you through a reset. You’ll usually need the email address on file with the account, and you may have to confirm your Social Security number, date of birth, or answers to security questions. Keeping the email address and phone number on the account current is worth doing before tax season, not during it.

Once you’re in, go to the tax documents section, pick the correct tax year, and open the PDF. Save the file where you can find it again, and don’t download it over public Wi-Fi. A 1099-R carries your Social Security number, account numbers, and distribution amounts on a single page.

Using an IRS Transcript as a Backup

When the payer’s site is a dead end, the IRS keeps a parallel record. A Wage and Income Transcript contains everything payers reported to the IRS under your Social Security number, including the data from your 1099-R, and it’s available for the current year and the nine prior years.1Internal Revenue Service. Access runs through your IRS Online Account. If you don’t have one, you’ll verify your identity through ID.me, which asks for a photo of a government-issued ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport) plus a selfie taken with your phone or webcam.7Internal Revenue Service. New Identity Verification Process to Access Certain IRS Online Tools and Services Verification takes a few minutes, and once it’s done you have ongoing access.

Two limitations matter. Transcript data for the most recent tax year generally doesn’t appear until the first week of February, because payers haven’t finished filing their information returns.1Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them And IRS transcripts do not include state or local tax withholding.8Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 159, How to Get a Wage and Income Transcript or Copy of Form W-2 If state tax was withheld from your distribution, you’ll still need the original 1099-R or a statement from the payer to file your state return correctly.

The transcript won’t look like a 1099-R. It’s a plain-text document organized by data field rather than the familiar boxes, but the numbers are the same, and that’s what the IRS needs from you on your return.

If Online Verification Doesn’t Work

Not every taxpayer gets through ID.me. If online verification fails, request the transcript by mail instead. You can call the IRS automated phone transcript service at 800-908-9946, or submit Form 4506-T. Mailed transcripts arrive in 5 to 10 calendar days.9Internal Revenue Service. If the Form Never Comes

Start with the payer. Confirm the form was issued and that they have the correct mailing address and email for you. If nothing arrives by the end of February, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. Have the payer’s name, address, and phone number on hand along with your own identification details, and the IRS will contact the payer on your behalf.10Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect

A missing 1099-R does not push your filing deadline. If April is close and the form still hasn’t shown up, you can file using estimated figures on Form 4852 or request an extension to file. An extension to file does not extend your deadline to pay any tax you owe.

Filing With Form 4852

Form 4852 is the IRS-approved substitute for a missing or incorrect 1099-R. You use it to report your best estimate of the distribution and any taxes withheld.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 154, Form W-2 and Form 1099-R (What to Do if Incorrect or Not Received) Pull together whatever records you have: year-end account statements, distribution confirmations, or plan trustee records. The form asks you to explain how you arrived at your figures and what you did to try to get the actual 1099-R. If the real form eventually arrives and the numbers differ, you’ll file Form 1040-X to amend the return, so it’s worth getting your estimates as close as you can the first time.

If the 1099-R Is Wrong

An incorrect form can be worse than a missing one, because the mismatch may not surface until the IRS proposes changes to your tax. The most common problems are wrong distribution codes in Box 7 and incorrect taxable amounts in Box 2a. A wrong code can make a legitimate rollover look taxable, or fail to flag an early withdrawal penalty that does apply.11Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Forms 1099-R and 5498

Contact the payer and ask for a corrected form. Payers are required to fix errors as soon as possible, and the reissued form will be marked “CORRECTED” at the top. Use that version and discard the original. If the payer refuses to correct the form, or you can’t agree on what’s accurate, you can file using the figures you believe are right and attach a written explanation, or use Form 4852 if the correction won’t arrive in time.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 154, Form W-2 and Form 1099-R (What to Do if Incorrect or Not Received)

How Long to Keep the Form

1099-R forms deserve longer retention than most tax documents. If you made after-tax contributions to a retirement plan, you’ll need the forms to prove your cost basis when calculating the taxable portion of future distributions. For Roth IRA conversions, the 1099-R showing the conversion is what proves future withdrawals are tax-free. Holding on to these records for the life of the account is the safer approach.
