Yes, you can FedEx your tax return to the IRS, but the protection that treats your shipping date as your filing date only applies if you use one of the FedEx services the IRS has specifically designated. Pick the wrong service and the IRS will judge your return by the date it physically arrives, not the date you handed it over.
Which FedEx Services the IRS Accepts
Under Internal Revenue Code Section 7502(f), only certain private delivery services trigger the “timely mailing treated as timely filing” rule.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 7502 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing and Paying The IRS-approved FedEx services are:2Internal Revenue Service. Private Delivery Services (PDS)
- FedEx First Overnight
- FedEx Priority Overnight
- FedEx Standard Overnight
- FedEx 2 Day
- FedEx International Next Flight Out
- FedEx International Priority
- FedEx International First
- FedEx International Economy
That’s the whole list. FedEx Ground, FedEx Home Delivery, FedEx Express Saver, and FedEx SameDay are not on it. Using any of those for a deadline-sensitive return gives you no legal protection on the filing date, even if the package moves faster than an approved service in practice.
Where to Send It
FedEx cannot deliver to a P.O. Box, and the addresses printed in most Form 1040 instructions are P.O. Boxes. The IRS maintains three street addresses specifically for private delivery services:3Internal Revenue Service. Submission Processing Center Street Addresses for Private Delivery Service (PDS)
- Internal Revenue Submission Processing Center, 3651 S IH35, Austin, TX 78741
- Internal Revenue Submission Processing Center, 333 W. Pershing, Kansas City, MO 64108
- Internal Revenue Submission Processing Center, 1973 Rulon White Blvd., Ogden, UT 84201
Which of the three you use depends on your state and the form you’re filing. For Form 1040, taxpayers in the southeastern states and Texas generally ship to Austin; the Midwest, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic go to Kansas City; and much of the West and parts of the Midwest go to Ogden. Filers from a foreign country, a U.S. territory, or a military APO/FPO address generally send individual returns to Austin.4Internal Revenue Service. One thing that trips people up: with USPS, a return with a payment sometimes goes to a different address than a return without one. With a private delivery service, both go to the same street address.3Internal Revenue Service. Submission Processing Center Street Addresses for Private Delivery Service (PDS)
Get a Dated Receipt at the Counter
The reason to use an IRS-designated service is that the date FedEx records when it accepts your package becomes your legal filing date. To make that protection work, you need written proof of that date.2Internal Revenue Service. Private Delivery Services (PDS) The shipping receipt handed to you at a staffed FedEx location does that job.
Drop boxes are riskier. When you drop a package in an unattended box, the date it enters FedEx’s system depends on when the box is collected and scanned, not when you dropped it off. On April 15, that gap can decide whether your return is on time. If you’re filing close to the deadline, go inside and get a receipt printed with the acceptance date. Keep it with the delivery confirmation showing the IRS received the package.
Extensions, Amended Returns, and Payments
Section 7502 covers “any return, claim, statement, or other document required to be filed, or any payment required to be made.”1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 7502 – Timely Mailing Treated as Timely Filing and Paying You can FedEx a Form 4868 extension request, an amended return, or a payment and get the same timely-filing protection, as long as you use one of the designated services.
If you’re sending a payment, include a completed voucher (Form 1040-V for individual taxes) with a check or money order payable to “United States Treasury.” Write your Social Security number, the tax year, and the form number on the check. The payment ships to the same submission processing center street address as the return.3Internal Revenue Service. Submission Processing Center Street Addresses for Private Delivery Service (PDS)
What Using the Wrong Service Costs
The failure-to-file penalty is 5% of unpaid tax per month or partial month, capped at 25%.5Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty If the return is more than 60 days late, there’s a minimum penalty of $525 (for returns required to be filed in 2026) or 100% of the tax owed, whichever is less.6Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 653, IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest Charges A separate failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5% per month runs on any unpaid balance, also capped at 25%.7Internal Revenue Service. Failure to Pay Penalty
Ship on an approved service and the date FedEx accepts the package is your filing date. Ship on a non-approved service, even a faster one, and there’s no protection. If the package arrives on April 17, the IRS treats you as having filed on April 17. The dollar difference between an approved FedEx service and an unapproved one is small next to a penalty that scales with your tax bill.
FedEx or USPS?
USPS gets you the same timely-filing protection through its postmark: if the envelope is postmarked by the due date, it counts as on time. First-class postage costs a few dollars. Certified Mail adds proof of mailing, and a return receipt confirms delivery.
FedEx costs more. A standard document envelope by FedEx 2 Day runs roughly $14 to $28, and Priority Overnight ranges from about $24 to $30 or more depending on distance. First Overnight and international services cost more still. What you’re paying for is guaranteed next-day delivery and live tracking, which matters most when you’re filing on deadline day and need certainty rather than hoping a standard envelope arrives in a few days. If you’re filing well before the deadline, USPS does the job.
