Can I Do DoorDash With an ITIN Number? Background Check and Tax Rules

You cannot complete a Dasher signup using only an ITIN. DoorDash runs every applicant through a background check with Checkr, and Checkr’s system requires a Social Security Number; it will not accept an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number in its place.1Checkr Help Center. Why Do I Need to Provide My Social Security Number (SSN), and What if I Don’t Have One If you already earn gig income under an ITIN through some other channel, the ITIN still matters for reporting that income to the IRS, but it will not get you onto the DoorDash platform.

Why the Background Check Blocks ITIN-Only Applicants

Checkr, the third-party screening company DoorDash uses, runs criminal record searches and motor vehicle checks keyed to Social Security Numbers. Checkr states directly that it cannot accept an ITIN or an Employer Identification Number as a substitute.1Checkr Help Center. Why Do I Need to Provide My Social Security Number (SSN), and What if I Don’t Have One Without an SSN, the report cannot be generated, and without the report DoorDash will not activate the account.

This is a technical limit rather than an immigration screen. Consumer reporting agencies search criminal databases and state motor vehicle records using SSNs. An ITIN does not appear in those databases because it exists only inside the federal tax system.2Internal Revenue Service. Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

Background checks for gig platforms are covered by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. If a report contains errors, the company that ordered it must tell you which screening agency was used, and you can dispute the information with that agency directly.3Federal Trade Commission. Employer Background Checks and Your Rights Those dispute rights address inaccurate reports, not the situation where no report can be produced at all.

What an ITIN Is and Isn’t

An ITIN is a nine-digit number the IRS issues to people who need to file federal tax returns but are not eligible for an SSN. Resident aliens, nonresident aliens, spouses, and dependents can apply regardless of immigration status, and the IRS confirms the number with a CP565 notice.2Internal Revenue Service. Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)4Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP565 Notice

The IRS is explicit about the limits. An ITIN does not authorize work in the United States, does not confer or change immigration status, does not qualify you for Social Security benefits or the Earned Income Tax Credit, and does not function as identification outside of tax filing.2Internal Revenue Service. Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) That last point is precisely why a screening company cannot use it.

The Independent Contractor Rule Doesn’t Change This

DoorDash classifies Dashers as independent contractors, not employees. Under federal rules, independent contractors are not covered by Form I-9, so DoorDash is not required to verify work authorization the way a traditional employer would.5U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Exceptions People sometimes read that exemption as a workaround for the SSN issue. It isn’t.

The I-9 exemption and the Checkr background check are two separate systems with different rules. Even without an I-9 obligation, DoorDash still needs a completed screening report before activating an account, and that report still needs an SSN. The contractor classification changes what DoorDash must collect from you for immigration compliance; it does not change what the screening vendor needs to run its checks.

If You Earn Gig Income, Your ITIN Still Matters for Taxes

If you earn gig income through any platform that does accept your paperwork, the ITIN is the number the IRS uses to track that income. Federal law requires any business that pays you $2,000 or more in a calendar year to file an information return reporting those payments,6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S.C. 6041 – Information at Source and under 26 U.S.C. ยง6109 both you and the platform must include a valid identifying number on those filings.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S.C. 6109 – Identifying Numbers For contractor work, that filing is Form 1099-NEC.

If the number on file is missing or incorrect, the platform is required to withhold 24 percent of each payment as backup withholding and remit it to the IRS.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S.C. 3406 – Backup Withholding You only recover that money by filing a return and claiming the withholding as a credit, so keeping an accurate ITIN on file matters for cash flow.

Even if you earn less than the $2,000 threshold and never receive a 1099-NEC, the income is still taxable and still has to appear on your federal return. The threshold decides whether the platform must send you a form, not whether you owe tax.

Keeping the ITIN Active

An ITIN expires if it isn’t used on a federal tax return for three consecutive years, with the expiration taking effect on December 31 after that third year.9Internal Revenue Service. How to Renew an ITIN To renew, submit Form W-7 with the “Renew an existing ITIN” box checked. Filing with an expired ITIN can delay your return and block certain credits.

An expired ITIN can still appear on information returns like a 1099-NEC that a platform sends to the IRS; renewal is only required when the ITIN will appear on your own filed return.9Internal Revenue Service. How to Renew an ITIN If you later obtain an SSN, stop using the ITIN entirely, do not renew it, and notify the IRS so your tax records can be consolidated under the new number.

What This Means in Practice

If your goal is to drive for DoorDash, an ITIN by itself will not get you activated. That does not change until you have an SSN to give Checkr. If your goal is to stay compliant with the IRS on any gig income you already earn, your ITIN is exactly the number the tax system expects you to use, and keeping it accurate on any payer’s file avoids backup withholding and filing problems later.
