You can deposit a Western Union money order into a bank account the same way you deposit a check: at a teller window, at a deposit-enabled ATM, or through your bank’s mobile app. Because the money order is prepaid, the funds are guaranteed by the issuer at purchase, so it carries less bounce risk than a personal check. Your bank will still place a hold while it verifies the item, and that hold is usually longer than people expect.
Prepare the Money Order Before You Go
Every field needs to be filled in. The “Pay to the Order of” line should show the legal name that matches your bank account records, and the “Purchaser” or “From” section should show the buyer’s full name and address.1Western Union. Send Money Safely: The Ultimate Guide to Using Money Orders Blank fields can raise questions during processing and slow the deposit down.
Endorse the money order by signing the back in the designated area, using the same name that appears on your account. If the “Pay to” name doesn’t match your account name exactly (a nickname instead of your legal name, for example), the bank may reject the deposit. Bring a government-issued photo ID.
One practical note on timing: some banks suggest signing the money order in front of the teller instead of ahead of time, because an already-endorsed instrument could be cashed by anyone if you lose it on the way.2Western Union. Money Orders: Purchase and Cash at a Western Union Near You
Depositing at a Teller Window or ATM
At a teller window, hand over the endorsed money order, a deposit slip, and your ID. The teller verifies the item, confirms your identity, and posts the deposit.
At a deposit-enabled ATM, choose the deposit option and insert the money order into the scanner. Most machines use optical character recognition to read the amount and routing details, then show you a digital image to confirm before you complete the transaction. Keep the receipt. It records the date, time, and amount credited, and it’s your proof of submission if anything goes wrong.
Depositing Through a Mobile Banking App
If your bank offers mobile deposit for checks, the same feature usually accepts money orders. Open the app, go to the remote deposit screen, pick the account, and enter the exact dollar amount printed on the money order.
The app will prompt you to photograph the front and back. Use a dark, flat surface and good lighting so the camera can capture the printed text, the amount, and the security features clearly. Before you photograph the back, add a restrictive endorsement: your signature plus wording like “For mobile deposit only at [your bank’s name].” Many banks require that specific language for mobile deposits and will reject submissions without it.
Hold onto the physical money order for at least 14 days after the deposit clears. If the bank runs into a verification problem, you may need to produce the original.
When the Money Actually Becomes Available
This is where Western Union money orders differ from what a lot of people assume. Federal Regulation CC sets the availability rules, and only U.S. Postal Service money orders deposited in person with a bank employee get next-business-day availability.3eCFR. 12 CFR 229.10 – Next-Day Availability Western Union money orders are treated like regular checks, so your bank uses its standard hold schedule.4eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks
Under that schedule, the bank must make the first $275 available by the next business day.5Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance The remainder generally becomes available by the second business day after deposit. The bank can extend the hold in specific situations:
- Deposits over $6,725 can be held beyond the standard schedule.5Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance
- Accounts open for fewer than 30 days face longer holds.
- If your account had a negative balance on six or more banking days in the previous six months, the bank can extend the hold.5Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System. A Guide to Regulation CC Compliance
- If the bank has reasonable doubt about whether the money order will clear, it can hold funds longer and must notify you.
One thing to understand about the released funds: they are provisional. Availability is not the same as final settlement. If the money order later comes back as fraudulent or uncollectable, the bank can debit the full amount from your account, even if you have already spent it.4eCFR. 12 CFR Part 229 – Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks
Check That the Money Order Is Real Before You Deposit It
Because a bad money order becomes your problem, spend a minute on the item before you deposit it. Western Union money orders are printed on special paper with watermarks that are hard to counterfeit.6Western Union. What Is a Money Order? Hold it up to the light and look for the watermark embedded in the paper. Flimsy paper, uneven printing, or a missing watermark are all reasons to treat it as suspicious.
You can also verify the status directly with Western Union using the 11-digit serial number. Western Union’s money order inquiry line is 1-720-945-9361.7Western Union. Contact Customer Service in the United States That call will confirm whether the serial number is valid and whether the money order has already been cashed.
Watch for the Overpayment Scam
The most common money order scam works like this: a buyer sends you a money order for more than the agreed price and asks you to refund the difference. The money order turns out to be counterfeit, but the bank often doesn’t catch it for days or weeks. By then you’ve sent real money back to the scammer. If you deposited a counterfeit money order, you owe your bank the full amount, even if you’ve already withdrawn and spent the credit.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Someone Bought Something I Was Selling Online and Sent Me a Check or Money Order for More Than the Price
Two rules protect you. Never accept a money order for more than the amount owed. And treat funds appearing in your account as tentative, not final; availability under Regulation CC does not mean the money order has fully cleared.
