Yes, H1B visa holders can travel to Canada. Whether you need a Canadian visa, an electronic authorization, or just your passport depends on your country of citizenship, not your H1B status, because Canada does not treat a U.S. work visa as a Canadian travel document. The harder part of the trip is usually the return: re-entering the United States has its own document requirements, and one misstep can leave you stranded at the border.
What Canada Requires to Let You In
Every traveler needs a valid passport. Beyond that, Canada sorts visitors into three tracks based on nationality.
If you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country, you need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) to fly into a Canadian airport. The eTA costs CAD $7, is applied for online, and stays valid for up to five years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. You do not need an eTA if you enter Canada by car, bus, train, or boat.1Government of Canada. Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) – Who Can Apply
If your country is on Canada’s visa-required list, you must apply for a Temporary Resident Visa (visitor visa) before your trip. Processing times vary by country and can run weeks or longer, so plan ahead. Some citizens of visa-required countries may qualify to apply for an eTA instead when arriving by air, but they still need a visitor visa if entering by land or sea.1Government of Canada. Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) – Who Can Apply
U.S. citizens need neither an eTA nor a visitor visa. Lawful permanent residents of the United States are exempt from the eTA but must carry a valid passport from their country of nationality along with a valid green card.2Government of Canada. Find Out About Electronic Travel Authorization
Your H1B status does not exempt you from any of this. An Indian citizen on an H1B, for example, is a visa-required national from Canada’s perspective and needs the corresponding authorization.
Documents You Need to Get Back Into the United States
To re-enter the U.S. in H1B status, present a valid passport, a valid H1B visa stamp inside that passport, and your Form I-797 Approval Notice for your current H1B petition.3Office of Visa and Immigration Services. H-1B Travel
CBP officers may ask for evidence that your employment is ongoing. Carry an employment verification letter from your employer stating your job title, salary, and continued employment, along with recent pay stubs. These are not strictly required, but having them ready smooths the inspection.4International Services. Documents Required to Reenter the US After Travel Abroad
After re-entry, check your electronic I-94 record on the CBP website. The I-94 shows your class of admission and the date your authorized stay expires. Errors happen more often than you would expect, and an incorrect I-94 can create problems later with travel, employment verification, and petition filings.5U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Automatic Visa Revalidation for Expired Stamps
This is where Canada trips become genuinely useful. If your H1B visa stamp has expired, you can still re-enter the United States without getting a new one, provided you qualify for automatic visa revalidation. The rule exists specifically for short trips to Canada and Mexico.
You must meet all of the following:
- Your absence from the United States was 30 days or less.
- You traveled only to Canada, Mexico, or adjacent islands, with no side trips to other countries.
- You have a valid, unexpired admission stamp or I-94 record.
- You did not apply for a new U.S. visa while abroad. If you applied and were denied, automatic revalidation is off the table.
- You are not a national of a country currently designated as a state sponsor of terrorism.
The countries currently designated as state sponsors of terrorism are Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Syria. Nationals of these countries cannot use automatic revalidation regardless of trip length.7U.S. Department of State. State Sponsors of Terrorism
Applying for a New Visa Stamp in Canada
Some H1B holders plan to renew a visa stamp at a U.S. consulate during a Canada trip. It is technically possible, but the practical picture is difficult. U.S. consulates in Canada prioritize Canadian residents. Non-residents can face wait times of roughly 600 calendar days for a nonimmigrant visa appointment, according to the U.S. Embassy in Canada.8U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Canada. Consular Services
Individual posts have their own restrictions. The U.S. Consulate in Montreal, for example, limits nonimmigrant visa appointments to emergency cases while it prioritizes immigrant visa categories. Check appointment availability before you travel.8U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Canada. Consular Services
There is a serious catch. If you apply for a new visa in Canada and get refused, you have broken the conditions for automatic revalidation. You would then need to obtain a new valid visa before returning to the United States, and that could leave you stuck outside the country until you secure one elsewhere. Many immigration practitioners advise against applying for a visa stamp during a short Canada trip unless you are confident in the outcome.6U.S. Department of State. Automatic Revalidation
Traveling With a Pending Petition
If your employer has filed a Form I-129 to extend or amend your H1B status, you can generally travel while that petition is pending, as long as you were physically in the United States when it was filed. You re-enter using your existing H1B visa stamp and your most recent I-797 Approval Notice.
The situation changes if you have a pending Form I-485 (adjustment of status to permanent residence). Leaving the United States without an approved advance parole document generally counts as abandoning your I-485, which means losing your place in line for a green card.9U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. If you are anywhere in the green card process, talk to your immigration attorney or your employer’s immigration counsel before booking international travel.
Passport Validity and Practical Preparation
The United States generally requires visitors to carry a passport valid for at least six months beyond their intended stay, though citizens of certain countries are exempt from that rule.10U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Six-Month Validity Update
Make sure your passport will not expire during your trip or within six months of your return. Airlines sometimes deny boarding to passengers whose passports are close to expiration, even if the destination would technically accept them.
Keep copies of your passport, H1B visa stamp, I-797 Approval Notice, and any Canadian entry authorization stored separately from the originals. A photo on your phone and a copy in cloud storage are both worth having. If your documents are lost or stolen at the border, a digital backup can be the difference between a delay and a disaster.
