Yes, gold can be held in an IRA, but only inside a Self-Directed IRA and only if the metal meets federal purity or statutory-coin rules, is bought through an approved custodian, and is stored at an approved depository. The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 opened retirement accounts to direct ownership of qualifying bullion and certain coins.1Congress.gov. Public Law 105-34, Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997 The contribution caps, distribution rules, and tax framework are the same as any other IRA. What changes is what you can buy, who has to hold it, and where it has to sit.
What Gold Qualifies
Federal tax law treats metals and coins as “collectibles,” and buying a collectible with IRA funds is treated as a taxable distribution.2Internal Revenue Service. Publication 590-B, Distributions from Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs) Gold gets in through two narrow doors.
The first is the bullion purity rule. The statute requires bullion to meet the minimum fineness a contract market requires for a regulated futures contract.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 408 – Individual Retirement Accounts For gold that means COMEX, which sets the floor at .995 fineness, or 99.5% pure.4CME Group. COMEX Chapter 113 – Gold Futures Bars and rounds from accredited refiners such as PAMP Suisse and Credit Suisse commonly meet this standard.
The second door is a specific list of coins Congress carved out from the collectibles rule. The statute references coins described in 31 U.S.C. § 5112(a), plus coins issued under the laws of any state.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 408 – Individual Retirement Accounts The American Gold Eagle is the headline example. It’s only 22 karat, roughly 91.67% pure gold, well under .995, and it qualifies solely because Congress named it.5United States Mint. Bullion Coin Programs
Coins that aren’t on the statutory list and don’t clear .995 don’t qualify. The South African Krugerrand is 22 karat like the Eagle but isn’t a U.S.-minted coin named in the statute, so it fails. British Sovereigns and older European gold coins are out for the same reason. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf and Austrian Gold Philharmonic, both refined to .9999, clear the bullion test on their own. Rare or numismatic coins, whatever their metal content, are collectibles.
If your IRA buys a disqualified coin or bar, the amount spent is treated as a distribution in the year of the purchase.6Internal Revenue Service. Investments in Collectibles in Individually Directed Qualified Plan Accounts That amount goes on your taxable income, and if you’re under 59½, the 10% early withdrawal penalty stacks on top.2Internal Revenue Service. Who Has to Hold the Gold
You can’t hold IRA gold yourself. Federal law defines an IRA as a trust whose trustee is a bank or another entity the IRS has approved to administer retirement funds.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 408 – Individual Retirement Accounts Nonbank trustees have to demonstrate competence, recordkeeping, and reporting to the IRS before they qualify.7eCFR. 26 CFR 1.408-2 – Individual Retirement Accounts In practice, a Gold IRA involves two professional parties on top of you: a custodian, who opens the account, processes contributions and distributions, files IRS reports, and directs purchases; and a depository, a high-security vault that physically stores the metal on the trustee’s behalf. The IRS is explicit that qualifying bullion has to be in the physical possession of a bank or IRS-approved nonbank trustee.8Internal Revenue Service. Retirement Plans FAQs Regarding IRAs
No Home Storage, Even Through an LLC
IRA-owned gold cannot sit in your home safe, your safe-deposit box, or any storage arrangement you personally control. That prohibition reaches indirect setups too, including having an IRA-owned LLC buy the gold and take delivery for you.8Internal Revenue Service. Retirement Plans FAQs Regarding IRAs
The U.S. Tax Court applied this in McNulty v. Commissioner (2021). A couple had American Eagle coins purchased through an IRA-controlled LLC shipped to their home and kept in a personal safe. The court held that taking physical custody was itself a taxable distribution, notwithstanding the LLC layer. They owed income tax on the full value of the coins plus accuracy-related penalties. “Home storage IRA” marketing runs directly into that result.
Prohibited Transactions
Separate from the storage rule, the IRA can’t transact with “disqualified persons.” That group includes you, your fiduciary, and close family: spouse, parents, grandparents, children, grandchildren, and their spouses.9Internal Revenue Service. Retirement Topics – Prohibited Transactions You can’t sell gold you already own into your IRA, buy gold out of the IRA for personal use, or pledge IRA gold as collateral. The consequence in an IRA is severe: the account loses its tax-exempt status and is treated as having distributed everything on the first day of the year the violation occurred, triggering income tax on the full balance plus the 10% penalty if you’re under 59½.2Internal Revenue Service. Funding the Account
You can move money into a Self-Directed Gold IRA three ways. New contributions follow the standard IRA cap. For 2026, total contributions across all of your Traditional and Roth IRAs combined cannot exceed $7,500, or $8,600 at age 50 or older, and cannot exceed your taxable compensation for the year.10Internal Revenue Service. Retirement Topics – IRA Contribution Limits
The cleanest way to fund a larger balance is a direct transfer, sometimes called a trustee-to-trustee transfer. The old custodian sends funds straight to the new one. Direct transfers aren’t rollovers, so the 60-day deadline and the one-per-year rule don’t apply, and there’s no limit on how many you can do in a year.11Internal Revenue Service. Rollovers of Retirement Plan and IRA Distributions The contribution cap doesn’t apply either.10Internal Revenue Service. Retirement Topics – IRA Contribution Limits
An indirect rollover is riskier. The old custodian pays the money to you, and you have 60 days to redeposit it in the new IRA. Miss the deadline and the whole amount becomes a taxable distribution, plus a 10% penalty if you’re under 59½.12Internal Revenue Service. Retirement Plans FAQs Relating to Waivers of the 60-Day Rollover Requirement You’re also limited to one indirect IRA-to-IRA rollover per 12-month period across all your IRAs.11Internal Revenue Service. Costs to Expect
A Gold IRA carries more recurring cost than a conventional IRA because more parties are involved.
- Custodian fees. Typically a setup fee around $50 and an annual maintenance fee that generally runs $75 to $250 depending on custodian and account size.
- Storage fees. Commingled storage usually runs $100 to $150 a year, with segregated storage higher.
- Dealer markups. Dealers charge a spread over spot. The range is wide, from around 2% to as much as 20% depending on product, weight, and dealer, with many common IRA-eligible products in the 5% to 8% range.
Some dealers add transaction fees on buys and sells, and not every dealer commits to a buyback. That matters when the time comes to liquidate, especially to fund a required distribution.
Taxes on the Way Out
Distributions from a Traditional Gold IRA are taxed as ordinary income at your marginal rate, not at the 28% collectibles capital gains rate that applies to gold in a taxable account.2Internal Revenue Service. Publication 590-B, Distributions from Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs) Depending on your bracket in retirement, that can work in your favor or against you.
Roth Gold IRAs work the other direction. Qualified distributions are tax-free once you’re at least 59½ and the account has been open five years, so long-term appreciation escapes tax entirely. Early withdrawals from either type generally trigger the 10% penalty on the taxable portion; with a Roth, original contributions can come out penalty-free at any time, but earnings withdrawn early are subject to both income tax and the penalty.2Internal Revenue Service. RMDs and the Liquidity Problem
Traditional Gold IRAs are subject to required minimum distributions starting the year you turn 73.13Internal Revenue Service. Retirement Plan and IRA Required Minimum Distributions FAQs Gold isn’t liquid the way stocks are, so you’ll either sell enough metal inside the IRA to raise the cash, or take an in-kind distribution and have the physical gold shipped to you. An in-kind distribution satisfies the RMD, but the fair market value on the distribution date is reported as taxable income. Miss the RMD and the IRS imposes a 25% excise tax on the shortfall, dropping to 10% if you correct it within two years.14Internal Revenue Service. Retirement Topics – Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) Roth IRAs have no RMDs during the owner’s lifetime, which is part of why some investors use a Roth structure for long-hold gold positions.
