Can British Citizens Work in Canada? Permits, PR, and Tax

British citizens can work in Canada, and there are five realistic routes depending on your age, qualifications, and whether you want a temporary stay or permanent residency. If you’re under 36, the International Experience Canada program is the fastest way in. If you have a Canadian job offer, an employer-specific work permit is the standard path. Multinational staff can move on an intra-company transfer. Skilled workers aiming to settle apply through Express Entry. And if you study in Canada first, a Post-Graduation Work Permit lets you work for any employer afterward.1Government of Canada. International Experience Canada – Who Can Apply Each has its own eligibility rules and timeline, and picking the wrong one can cost months.

International Experience Canada if You’re Under 36

UK citizens aged 18 to 35 qualify for all three IEC streams: Working Holiday, Young Professionals, and International Co-op.1Government of Canada. International Experience Canada – Who Can Apply Age is measured at the time of application.2Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Who Can Participate in International Experience Canada

The Working Holiday stream is the flexible one: it gives you an open work permit, so you can arrive without a job lined up and work for any employer. Young Professionals and International Co-op are tied to a specific employer, and the role generally has to sit within TEER categories 0, 1, 2, or 3 of the National Occupational Classification.

Two things you’ll need to show at the border. First, health insurance covering medical care, hospitalization, and repatriation for the whole stay; if your policy is shorter than your permit, the officer can shorten the permit to match.3Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Employer-Specific Work Permits

Over 35, or under 36 but with a firm job offer? The employer-specific work permit is the standard route. In most cases, the Canadian employer must first get a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment from Employment and Social Development Canada, confirming that no Canadian citizen or permanent resident is available for the job and that hiring a foreign worker is genuinely needed.5Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. What Is a Labour Market Impact Assessment The employer runs the LMIA process, not you, but it adds weeks or months before you can even submit your permit application.

Intra-Company Transfers

Some jobs skip the LMIA. The most common exemption for British workers is the Intra-Company Transfer, which lets multinationals move executives, senior managers, functional managers, or workers with specialized knowledge into a Canadian office. To qualify you must have worked full-time for the company or an affiliate for at least one year within the past three, the Canadian operation must be a legitimate continuing establishment, and the Canadian role must sit in one of the qualifying categories. A sideways move to a junior post won’t clear the bar.

Express Entry for Permanent Residency

If you want to settle rather than dip in, Express Entry is the main federal pathway. It manages three programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class for people who already have Canadian work experience, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program.

Most British applicants outside Canada come in through the Federal Skilled Worker Program. First you need to score at least 67 out of 100 on a selection grid covering education, language ability, work experience, age, job offer, and adaptability factors. Clear that threshold and your profile enters the Express Entry pool, where the Comprehensive Ranking System scores you against every other candidate.6Government of Canada. Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Criteria

The CRS awards points for age, education, language, and Canadian work experience, with bonuses for a provincial nomination or a valid job offer. IRCC holds regular draws and invites the highest-ranked candidates to apply. Recent general draws have had CRS cutoffs around 393, but the number moves, and category-based draws for specific occupations can land elsewhere.7Government of Canada. Language Test and Credential Assessment

For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, you need Canadian Language Benchmark level 7 in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, or the French equivalent.8Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Language Test Results for Express Entry Being a native English speaker doesn’t exempt you. IRCC requires formal results from an approved test such as IELTS or CELPIP, whatever your passport says.

You’ll also need an Educational Credential Assessment confirming that your UK qualification is equivalent to a Canadian one. IRCC designates specific organizations to run these, and certain regulated professions must go through their own designated body — architects through the Canadian Architectural Certification Board, physicians through the Medical Council of Canada, pharmacists through the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada.9Government of Canada. Educational Credential Assessment British degrees generally convert well, but the assessment is still mandatory. Order it early; it takes several weeks.

Provincial Nominee Programs

Every province and territory except Quebec runs a Provincial Nominee Program. A nomination adds 600 CRS points to your Express Entry score, which effectively guarantees an invitation in the next draw.10Government of Canada. Immigrate as a Provincial Nominee Some provincial streams also operate outside Express Entry entirely, with separate applications and criteria.

Post-Graduation Work Permit After Studying in Canada

If you study at an eligible Canadian institution, you can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit when you finish. A PGWP is an open work permit valid for any employer. Programs of two years or more can yield up to three years; shorter programs match the program length (minimum eight months). Master’s graduates can receive a three-year PGWP even if the program was shorter than two years.11Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. About the Post-Graduation Work Permit

Rules tightened in late 2024. If you apply on or after November 1, 2024, you must show language proficiency of CLB 7 for university graduates or CLB 5 for college and polytechnic graduates. If your study permit application was submitted on or after November 1, 2024, you must also graduate in an eligible field of study. And if your studies started on or after September 1, 2024, at least 50% of the program has to be completed in-class within Canada; time studied online or outside Canada is deducted from your PGWP length.12Government of Canada. Post-Graduation Work Permit – Who Can Apply

You must apply within 180 days of your program completion, and your study permit must have been valid at some point during that window.12Government of Canada. Post-Graduation Work Permit – Who Can Apply

Bringing a Spouse or Children

If you move to Canada on a work permit, your spouse or common-law partner may qualify for their own open work permit, but the rules changed on January 21, 2025. Eligibility now depends on the TEER level of your job. If you work in a TEER 0 (management) or TEER 1 (professional) occupation, your partner qualifies. For TEER 2 and TEER 3 jobs, only certain listed roles qualify, mostly technical, health, and engineering-adjacent. Partners of workers in TEER 4 or 5 occupations generally no longer qualify.13Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Open Work Permits for Family Members of Foreign Workers – Who Can Apply

Minor children already in Canada with a parent on a work permit don’t need a study permit to attend primary or secondary school, though getting one is recommended so they can keep studying after turning 18, access co-op work permits, and receive certain provincial services. Children arriving from outside Canada with a work permit-holding parent must apply for a study permit before entry, but they don’t need a school acceptance letter.14Government of Canada. Regulated Professions: A Permit Isn’t a Licence

About 20% of Canadian jobs are in regulated occupations, and a work permit does not, on its own, let you practise. Fields including nursing, engineering, medicine, law, plumbing, and electrical work require a separate licence or certificate from the relevant provincial or territorial regulator, which often means additional exams, supervised hours, or bridging courses.15Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials. Find Out if Your Occupation Is Regulated or Not

Some regulated professions carry an exclusive right to practise, meaning only licensed members can do the work. Others use reserved title, where anyone can perform the work but only licensed members can use the professional title. Where an occupation isn’t regulated, recognition of your UK qualifications is up to the employer.15Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials. Find Out if Your Occupation Is Regulated or Not If you work in healthcare, architecture, pharmacy, or a licensed trade, start the licensing process well before you move.

Tax When You Work in Canada

Working in Canada creates Canadian tax obligations. If you set up significant residential ties, such as a home, a spouse in Canada, or dependants, the Canada Revenue Agency treats you as a factual resident, and you owe Canadian tax on your worldwide income for your residency period. Even without those ties, spending 183 days or more in Canada in a calendar year makes you a deemed resident taxed on worldwide income.16Government of Canada. Working in Canada Temporarily

The Canada-UK tax treaty prevents double taxation. If you pay Canadian tax on employment income, the UK gives you a credit for the Canadian tax against your UK liability.17Government of Canada. Convention Between the Government of Canada and the Government of the United Kingdom There’s a narrow exemption where tax stays UK-only: you must be in Canada fewer than 183 days, your employer must not be a Canadian resident, and the salary must not be paid by a Canadian office. Most British workers on Canadian permits won’t meet all three, so plan to file a Canadian return.

A separate social security agreement coordinates pension contributions between the Canada Pension Plan and the UK state pension, and can help you qualify for benefits in either country by combining contribution periods.18Government of Canada. Fees, Biometrics, and Processing

All work permit applications go through your IRCC secure account online, where you upload documents, pay, and track status.19Government of Canada. Work Permit – How to Apply The standard work permit processing fee is CAD $155 per person. Open work permits (Working Holiday, PGWP, and similar) carry an additional CAD $100 open work permit holder fee.20Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Citizenship and Immigration Application Fees

Most applicants also receive a Biometric Instruction Letter after submitting. Biometrics cost CAD $85 per person or CAD $170 for families of two or more applying together, and you give fingerprints and a photo in person at a visa application centre. In the UK, that usually means a VFS Global location in London, Edinburgh, or another city.21Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Pay Your Application Fees Online Book your appointment promptly, since slots fill up in peak periods.

You’ll also need a valid passport (the permit’s expiry generally can’t run past it), an ACRO police certificate, and, for anywhere you’ve lived six months or more outside the UK, a police certificate from that country too.22ACRO Criminal Records Office. Police Certificates A medical exam by an IRCC-designated panel physician may be required depending on your occupation (healthcare and childcare roles in particular) or the length of your stay. Panel physicians in the UK are limited, so book early.

Processing times vary by permit type, application volume, and country of residence. IRCC publishes current estimates on its processing times tool, and the range runs from a few weeks for straightforward IEC applications to several months for LMIA-based permits. Don’t quit your UK job or sign a Canadian lease until the approval is in hand.
