Can Anyone Get a PTIN? Denials, SSN Exceptions, and Renewal

To get a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN), submit Form W-12 through the IRS Tax Professional PTIN System, pay the $18.75 fee, and, in most cases, receive your number within about 15 minutes. No license or degree is required, but the IRS runs a suitability check that looks at your criminal history and your personal tax compliance before issuing the number.1Internal Revenue Service. Do You Actually Need a PTIN

A PTIN is required for every individual who is paid to prepare, or substantially help prepare, a federal tax return or claim for refund. Job title and credentials do not matter: CPAs, attorneys, enrolled agents, and seasonal employees at a tax office all need one.2Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions: Do I Need a PTIN?

Signing the return is not the trigger. If you do the substantive preparation work for pay and a supervisor signs, you still need your own PTIN.2Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions: Do I Need a PTIN?

You do not need one if you prepare returns entirely without compensation, such as at a VITA or TCE site; if your work is limited to clerical tasks like data entry under a preparer’s direction with no independent judgment on tax positions; or if you prepare your own employer’s return as part of your regular duties.2Internal Revenue Service. An intern who only pulls documents and fills in fields specified by a preparer does not need one; the same intern independently preparing a Form 1040 does, whether or not they sign it.

Your Own Tax Compliance

The IRS checks whether you have filed all required personal and business returns and whether you owe outstanding balances. There is no formal grace period. Miss the deadline and you cannot prepare returns for compensation until you renew. If your PTIN has been expired for more than one full calendar year, you must renew for each expired year in which you prepared returns or held enrolled agent status. After three consecutive inactive years, you must submit a brand-new application.10Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions: PTIN Application/Renewal Assistance
