Yes, an Employment Authorization Document can be used as ID. The EAD (Form I-766) is a government-issued photo card from USCIS that proves both your identity and your right to work, and federal agencies accept it for employment verification, domestic air travel, opening a bank account, and applying for a state driver’s license. It does not, however, authorize international travel, and everything it lets you do ends the day it expires.
Using Your EAD at Work
Every U.S. employer must verify new hires on Form I-9. The EAD sits on the I-9’s “List A,” meaning it proves identity and work authorization in a single document. You do not need to bring a driver’s license, Social Security card, or anything else alongside it.1U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. 13.0 Acceptable Documents for Verifying Employment Authorization and Identity
Your employer must accept a valid, unexpired EAD. They cannot demand a green card, a U.S. passport, or any specific alternative once you have presented it. Asking for more or different documents than the law requires is called document abuse and violates the anti-discrimination provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Complaints go to the Department of Justice’s Immigrant and Employee Rights Section.2U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Employee Rights
If Your Card Is Lost or Stolen
If your EAD is lost, stolen, or damaged and you have applied for a replacement, the USCIS receipt showing you filed for a new card is valid for I-9 purposes for 90 days. Your employer must accept it during that window. Once the 90 days end, you must present the actual replacement card. A second receipt cannot extend the window.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Acceptable Receipts
Using Your EAD at the Airport
TSA explicitly lists the “U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)” as acceptable identification at airport security checkpoints.4Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint You can present your EAD to board any domestic flight without a passport or driver’s license.
REAL ID enforcement began in May 2025, but it applies to state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards. The EAD is federally issued, so the REAL ID star has nothing to do with it. TSA accepts your EAD on its own terms.5Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID
TSA currently accepts expired IDs on its list, including EADs, up to two years past the expiration date. Beginning February 1, 2026, travelers without acceptable ID can pay for TSA’s ConfirmID service to try to verify identity by other means; if that verification fails, you will not clear the checkpoint.4Transportation Security Administration. Why Your EAD Does Not Cover International Travel
A standard EAD is not a travel document. If you leave the United States while a Form I-485 adjustment of status is pending and you do not have advance parole, USCIS will typically treat your application as abandoned and deny it.6U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Travel Documents
To travel and return while your case is pending, you need advance parole. It comes as either a standalone document (Form I-512L) or a “combo card,” an EAD printed with the notation “Serves as I-512 Advance Parole.” The combo card is available to certain applicants with pending family-based or employment-based I-485 applications.7U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. USCIS to Issue Employment Authorization and Advance Parole Card for Adjustment of Status Applicants Advance parole lets airlines board you for return travel without a visa, but it does not replace your passport and does not guarantee reentry.
Even with advance parole, prolonged trips can prompt a USCIS request for evidence questioning whether you still intend to live and work in the United States, especially in employment-based cases. Keeping trips under six months is a common rule of thumb.
Using Your EAD at the DMV
State motor vehicle agencies accept the EAD as proof of identity and lawful presence when you apply for a driver’s license or state ID. The agency verifies your immigration status through the federal SAVE program.8U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Verification Process Bring separate proof of your residential address, such as a utility bill, lease, or bank statement.
Because your EAD has an expiration date, the license you receive is a limited-term license. Federal regulations prohibit states from issuing a license valid longer than your authorized stay; if no set expiration appears on your immigration documents, the ceiling is one year.9eCFR. 6 CFR 37.21 – Temporary or Limited-Term Drivers Licenses and Identification Cards When you renew your EAD, you will need to return to the DMV to extend your license.
An EAD also satisfies the identity and lawful-presence documentation states must verify before issuing a REAL ID-compliant card.10Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID Frequently Asked Questions
Using Your EAD at the Bank
Federal anti-money-laundering rules require banks to verify your identity before opening an account. The Customer Identification Program calls for “unexpired government-issued identification evidencing nationality or residence and bearing a photograph or similar safeguard,” listing a driver’s license or passport as examples.11eCFR. 31 CFR 1020.220 – Customer Identification Program Requirements for Banks An EAD fits that description, and most major banks accept it for checking and savings accounts.
For non-U.S. persons, banks also need a taxpayer identification number, passport number, or alien identification card number. If you have a Social Security number or an ITIN, bring it along with your EAD. Some banks apply internal policies stricter than the federal minimum, so calling the branch first can save a trip.
Building credit with an EAD is possible too. Several card issuers accept applications from noncitizens using an ITIN in place of an SSN, and your EAD paired with an ITIN or SSN generally satisfies their identity checks. Secured cards are the most accessible starting point if you have no U.S. credit history.
Getting a Social Security Number With Your EAD
You can request a Social Security number on Form I-765 when you apply for the EAD itself. If you check the box, USCIS forwards your information to the Social Security Administration once the EAD is approved, and the card arrives by mail, typically within two weeks of your EAD.12Social Security Administration. Apply for Your Social Security Number While Applying for Your Work Permit and/or Lawful Permanent Residency
If you did not request an SSN on the I-765, you can apply in person at a Social Security office after receiving your EAD. Bring the original card. SSA does not accept photocopies or notarized documents.12Social Security Administration. Apply for Your Social Security Number While Applying for Your Work Permit and/or Lawful Permanent Residency
Your Social Security card will carry the notation “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION.” That does not limit which jobs you can hold while your EAD is current, but it does mean the Social Security card alone will not prove work authorization; you still need your EAD or another current DHS document.13Social Security Administration. What Expiration Does to All of This
An expired EAD is where most holders get into trouble. A major policy change took effect on October 30, 2025: USCIS ended the automatic extension of EADs for most categories when a renewal application is filed.14Federal Register. Removal of the Automatic Extension of Employment Authorization Documents Before that date, timely filing bought you up to 540 days of continued work authorization while USCIS processed the new card. That safety net is now gone for most applicants.
The main exception is Temporary Protected Status. TPS-based EADs can still be automatically extended through Federal Register notices, generally for up to one year or the duration of the TPS designation, whichever is shorter.15U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Automatic Employment Authorization Document (EAD) Extension
For everyone else, when the card expires, so does your work authorization. Your employer must stop accepting it on the I-9. Your limited-term driver’s license may end on the same date. TSA will still accept the card at the checkpoint for up to two years past expiration, but that is the only setting where an expired EAD keeps working. If you filed a renewal before October 30, 2025, and already received an automatic extension, that extension remains valid.14Federal Register. Removal of the Automatic Extension of Employment Authorization Documents For non-TPS renewals filed on or after that date, there is no bridge period, so file well ahead of your expiration and count on months of processing.
