Can a British Citizen Live in Canada? Visas, PR, and Citizenship

A British citizen can live in Canada, but not automatically. Every route requires an application and fees, and the right one depends on your age, whether you have a job or school place lined up, and whether you have close family already in Canada. The main options are the International Experience Canada youth mobility program (open to UK nationals aged 18 to 35), an employer-specific work permit, a study permit, permanent residence through Express Entry or a provincial nominee program, and family sponsorship by a Canadian citizen or permanent resident relative.

Visiting Is Not the Same as Living There

Short trips are easy: UK passport holders don’t need a visitor visa for stays of up to six months, though you do need an Electronic Travel Authorization to fly in, which costs CAD $7 and is linked to your passport.1Government of Canada. Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA): How to Apply Visitor status doesn’t let you work or study long-term.2Government of Canada. International Experience Canada: The Easiest Route for Under-36s

If you’re a British citizen aged 18 to 35, this is usually the fastest way in. Under a 2024 expansion of the UK-Canada youth mobility arrangement, UK nationals can stay for up to three years through IEC, longer than the two years available to most other nationalities.3Government of Canada. International Experience Canada: About the Program

There are three categories. The Working Holiday stream is the popular one: no job offer required, and you get an open work permit that lets you work for almost any employer, anywhere in Canada, in almost any role. The Young Professionals stream requires a job offer in a skilled occupation (TEER 0 to 3) and gives you an employer-specific permit. International Co-op is for students enrolled at a post-secondary institution outside Canada who need a placement to complete their studies.

The IEC participation fee for the 2026 season is CAD $184.75. Working Holiday applicants also pay a CAD $100 open work permit holder fee. Biometrics are CAD $85, valid for ten years.3Government of Canada. International Experience Canada: About the Program4Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Fees

Other Work Permits

Outside IEC, work permits fall into two categories. Employer-specific permits are tied to a particular job, and the employer may need a Labour Market Impact Assessment showing no Canadian was available for the role. Open work permits let you work for almost any employer and are usually granted through specific programs (like IEC or a Bridging Open Work Permit). The application fee is CAD $155, plus CAD $100 for an open work permit holder fee where applicable, plus CAD $85 for biometrics.4Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Fees

Time on a Canadian work permit isn’t wasted if you’re aiming for permanent residence later. It builds the Canadian work experience that feeds directly into the Canadian Experience Class stream of Express Entry.

Study Permits

You need a study permit for any Canadian program longer than six months.5Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. I Want to Study in Canada for Less Than 6 Months. Do I Need a Study Permit? Shorter programs don’t require one. The fee is CAD $150, plus CAD $85 biometrics.4Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Fees

To qualify you need an acceptance letter from a Designated Learning Institution, proof you can cover tuition and living expenses, and a clean criminal record. A medical exam may be required depending on your circumstances. Studying in Canada also strengthens a later Express Entry application, because Canadian education and any post-graduation work experience improve your ranking.

Permanent Residence Through Express Entry

Express Entry is Canada’s main economic immigration system. It handles three federal programs that share a single pool of candidates:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program, for people with skilled work experience gained outside Canada, scored on age, education, language, and work history.
  • Canadian Experience Class, for people who already have recent skilled work experience in Canada — the natural next step after an IEC permit.
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program, for qualified tradespeople with a valid job offer or a Canadian certificate of qualification.6Government of Canada. Express Entry: Federal Skilled Worker Program

You create an online profile and get a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score out of 1,200 based on age, education, language ability, and work experience.7Government of Canada. Express Entry: Check Your Score Canada holds regular draws and invites the highest scorers to apply. A provincial nomination adds 600 points, which effectively guarantees an invitation.8Government of Canada. Express Entry: Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) Criteria

Unless you’re applying through the Canadian Experience Class or already hold a valid Canadian job offer, you must show settlement funds. As of July 2025, a single applicant needs CAD $15,263, rising to CAD $28,362 for a family of four, with additional amounts for larger families. Your family-size count includes a spouse and dependent children even if they aren’t coming with you, and the figures are updated annually.9Canada.ca. Documents for Express Entry: Proof of Funds

The federal processing fee is CAD $950 plus a Right of Permanent Residence Fee of CAD $575 — CAD $1,525 per applicant.4Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Fees

Bridging Open Work Permits

If you’re already working in Canada and your permit is about to expire while you wait for a PR decision, a Bridging Open Work Permit lets you keep working legally in the gap. You must be living in Canada, be the principal applicant on the PR file, and have passed the completeness check on your submission.10Government of Canada. Provincial Nominee Programs

Every province and territory runs its own nomination program targeting workers who fit local labor needs. Enhanced PNPs link into Express Entry and add the 600-point bonus. Base PNPs work independently: you apply to the province, then file a separate federal PR application once nominated.11Government of Canada. Express Entry: Rounds of Invitations

Provincial fees vary. Some charge nothing; others charge up to several thousand dollars for the provincial portion, on top of federal fees. Eligibility criteria, application windows, and processing times differ by province, so research the specific one you’re targeting before applying.

Family Sponsorship

If you have a spouse, common-law partner, parent, grandparent, or dependent child who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, they may be able to sponsor you for PR. The sponsor must be at least 18, must live in Canada (or plan to return if sponsoring a spouse, partner, or dependent child), and must sign a legally binding financial undertaking.12Government of Canada. How long that undertaking lasts depends on the relationship:

The sponsor is financially responsible for the sponsored person’s basic needs throughout that period, even if the relationship breaks down. Parent and grandparent sponsors also have to meet minimum income thresholds for the three tax years before applying, adjusted annually and scaled to family size.14Government of Canada. What Permanent Residence Actually Gives You

PR lets you live, work, and study anywhere in Canada, access most social benefits, and eventually apply for citizenship. You’re not yet Canadian, but the day-to-day differences are small. The main condition: you must be physically present in Canada for at least 730 days within every rolling five-year period to keep your status.15Canada.ca. Understand Permanent Resident Status

Your PR card is usually valid for five years and costs CAD $50 to renew.16Canada.ca. How Much Does a Permanent Resident Card Cost? Your PR status itself doesn’t expire when the card does; you remain a permanent resident until an official decision says otherwise, you give it up, or you become a citizen.

Healthcare is administered provincially. New permanent residents may face a waiting period of up to three months before provincial coverage starts, depending on the province, and private insurance during that gap is advisable.17Government of Canada. Access Our Universal Health Care System Once you establish residential ties (a home, a spouse or dependants in Canada) or spend 183 or more days in a tax year, you become a Canadian tax resident and must report worldwide income.18Canada.ca. T4058: Non-Residents and Income Tax The UK-Canada tax treaty prevents double taxation on the same income, though a cross-border tax advisor in your first year is usually worth the fee.

Becoming a Canadian Citizen

After enough time as a permanent resident, you can apply for citizenship. You must have been physically present in Canada for at least 1,095 days (three years) during the five years before signing your application, and at least 730 of those days must have been as a permanent resident. Time in Canada as a temporary resident before getting PR counts at half rate, up to a maximum of 365 credit days.19Government of Canada. Apply for Canadian Citizenship: Adults and Minor Children

Applicants between 18 and 54 must show adequate English or French (roughly CLB level 4) and pass a knowledge test on Canadian history, geography, and rights. Applicants 55 and older are exempt from both. The adult fee is CAD $649.75, covering both processing and the right of citizenship.4Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Fees

Canada allows dual citizenship, so a British citizen who becomes Canadian keeps the UK passport too.
