Liberty from Camp Lejeune is capped by road miles from the nearest base gate, and the cap grows with the length of the absence: 85 miles for regular overnight liberty, 250 miles for a regular weekend, 350 miles for three-day special liberty, and 450 miles for four-day special liberty. How the Mileage Is Measured

Commanders can shrink the limits. The base order lets a commanding officer reduce the authorized distance based on weather, safety concerns, or the condition of a Marine’s transportation. Battalion and unit-level commanders are directed to issue their own local orders that align with the base guidance, so your unit may enforce something tighter than the base ceiling. Check your unit’s standing order before you plan a trip near the edge of the limit.
Check-In, Check-Out, and What to Carry
Enlisted Marines in the grade of E-5 and below who travel beyond the authorized liberty boundary must be issued a Liberty Request/Out of Bounds Pass on NAVMC Form 10471.2Marine Corps Installations East. MCIEAST-MCB CAMLEJO 1050.6 – Leave and Liberty Officers and staff noncommissioned officers may check in and out by telephone or through Marine On-Line. Sergeants and below follow whatever check-in method their commanding officer directs.
Carry your military ID at all times during liberty. Holding liberty or leave documents issued to someone else is prohibited. Leave is tracked in Marine On-Line, and Marines with meal cards turn them in to the S-1 or Officer of the Day when checking out. Permission to check in or out by phone is a convenience only; it can’t be used to stretch an authorized absence.
When You Need Leave Instead
Liberty is a short authorized absence that is not charged against your leave balance, and you have to be back in your normal commuting area when it ends.3I Marine Expeditionary Force. I MEFO 1050.1J – Leave and Liberty Leave is a formal entitlement charged against accrued leave days and requires approval through the chain of command.4Department of Defense. DoDI 1327.06 – Leave and Liberty Policy and Procedures If your trip needs more time or more distance than liberty allows, request leave.
Special liberty of three or four days can be granted by local commanders for reasons such as recognition of exceptional performance, compensation for long deployments, or traffic safety around holiday weekends. Four-day special liberty cannot exceed four calendar days under any circumstances, and special liberty cannot be combined with regular liberty or a holiday period if the total continuous absence would exceed the authorized duration.
If a MEF Order Governs You Instead
The base order isn’t the only liberty policy a Marine at Camp Lejeune might fall under. I Marine Expeditionary Force Order 1050.1J sets its own tiers: 100 miles for overnight or 24-hour liberty, 200 miles for two-day special liberty, 300 miles for three-day, and 400 miles for four-day.3I Marine Expeditionary Force. The 450-Mile Recall Radius
The 450-mile figure does double duty. Beyond capping four-day special liberty, it also sets the radius the Public Affairs Officer uses to request that radio and television stations broadcast recall information when a recall is ordered.2Marine Corps Installations East. Everyone on leave or liberty remains subject to military authority and can be apprehended for conduct that discredits the armed forces, no matter how far from base they are.
