Calgary Sales Tax Rate: 5% GST, Higher-Rate Items, Visitor Refunds

The sales tax rate in Calgary is 5%, and it all comes from the federal Goods and Services Tax. Alberta charges no provincial sales tax, there is no Harmonized Sales Tax, and Calgary has no municipal sales tax of its own. If a receipt shows 5% tax on a purchase, that is the full amount owed.1Canada Revenue Agency. Charge and Collect the GST/HST – Which Rate to Charge

Why the Rate Stops at 5%

Canadian sales tax works in layers. The federal government levies GST at 5% on most goods and services under the Excise Tax Act.2Department of Justice Canada. Excise Tax Act Most provinces then add a provincial sales tax or fold their tax into a single HST with the federal portion. Alberta does neither. It’s the only province with no general provincial sales tax, so nothing stacks on top of the 5% GST at checkout.1Canada Revenue Agency. Charge and Collect the GST/HST – Which Rate to Charge Combined rates in other provinces run as high as 15%, which is why Calgary consistently sits among the lowest-taxed major Canadian cities for everyday spending.

What You Pay Nothing On

Some purchases carry a GST rate of exactly 0%. These are called zero-rated supplies, and for the shopper the effect is simple: no tax at the register, and no provincial tax either because Alberta doesn’t have one.

Basic groceries fall into this category, including milk, bread, and fresh vegetables. Prescription drugs and drug-dispensing fees are also zero-rated.3Canada Revenue Agency. A separate group of goods and services is exempt rather than zero-rated. The buyer still sees no tax on the bill, though the mechanics behind the scenes differ.3Canada Revenue Agency. General Information for GST/HST Registrants The common exempt categories in Calgary are:

  • Long-term residential rent. Renting an apartment or house as your home is GST-exempt. Short-term rentals like Airbnb stays are not, and they also attract the provincial tourism levy.
  • Health and dental services performed by licensed practitioners for medical reasons.
  • Daycare and educational programs offered by recognized schools and universities.
  • Most banking and investment services.

Where You’ll Pay More Than 5%

The 5% headline rate covers general shopping and dining. A handful of purchases carry additional provincial or federal charges on top, and it’s worth knowing which ones before the bill lands.

Hotels and Short-Term Stays

Hotels, motels, short-term rental units, and similar temporary accommodations in Calgary carry a provincial tourism levy. As of April 1, 2026, the rate is 6% of the purchase price, up from 4% for bookings made before that date.5Alberta.ca. Tourism Levy The levy applies to the room rate and to related fees such as pet charges, cleaning fees, and booking fees charged by online platforms. A hotel stay is therefore subject to 5% GST plus the 6% tourism levy, for 11% on the accommodation portion of the bill. Some hotels also add a voluntary destination marketing fee, which is set by the property and is not a government tax.

Gasoline and Diesel

Fuel sold at Calgary pumps includes a provincial fuel tax of 13 cents per litre. Marked fuel used for farming or other qualifying off-road purposes carries a lower rate of 4 cents per litre.6Alberta.ca. Fuel Tax – Overview The fuel tax is built into the price at the pump rather than added at the register, and the 5% GST applies on top.

Tobacco

Alberta levies a per-unit tobacco tax under the Tobacco Tax Act. The current rate is 30 cents per cigarette, which works out to $7.50 on a standard package of 25 cigarettes and $60.00 for a carton of eight packages.7Alberta.ca. Tax, Levy, and Prescribed Interest Rates This is collected at the wholesale level and embedded in the retail price, with GST charged on top of the tobacco-inclusive price.

Insurance Premiums

Alberta charges a 4% tax on insurance premiums, including auto insurance. It shows up as a line item on insurance bills rather than at a point of sale, so it doesn’t look like a sales tax, but it is an additional provincial charge that Calgary residents pay.

Luxury Vehicles

Since September 2022, Canada has imposed a federal luxury tax on new passenger vehicles priced above $100,000. The tax is calculated as the lesser of 10% of the vehicle’s full price or 20% of the amount over $100,000. On a $120,000 SUV, that works out to $4,000, since 20% of the $20,000 over the threshold is less than 10% of the full price. The luxury tax is added before GST is calculated on the total. As of November 5, 2025, the federal luxury tax no longer applies to aircraft or vessels; it now applies only to subject vehicles.8Canada Border Services Agency. Memorandum D18-4-1 – Select Luxury Items Tax on Importation Used vehicle sales between private parties are not subject to this tax.

Refunds for Visitors

International visitors cannot claim back the GST paid during a trip to Calgary. Canada eliminated its general visitor rebate program years ago. The only remaining program for non-residents is the Foreign Convention and Tour Incentive Program, which is limited to convention organizers and non-resident exhibitors rather than ordinary tourists.9Canada Revenue Agency. For anyone budgeting a Calgary trip, the practical numbers are 5% GST on most shopping and dining, 11% total on hotel stays, and no tax at all on basic groceries and prescription medications.5Alberta.ca. Tourism Levy
