Buying Car Tax Mid-Month: Full Month Charge, Cost, and SORN

When you’re buying a car mid month, Vehicle Excise Duty starts from the 1st of that month, so you pay for the full month no matter which day you take ownership. The seller’s tax cancels automatically at the transfer, and you have to set up your own tax before driving the car on public roads. Done online with the right paperwork, it takes a few minutes.

Why the Full Month Applies

Vehicle Excise Duty runs in whole calendar months. Buy on the 25th and your tax period still begins on the 1st. There’s no pro-rata option and no partial-month discount for new keepers. This framework sits under the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 and has applied to every ownership change since tax discs were abolished in 2014.1Legislation.gov.uk. The practical effect is that the government collects VED from both parties for the month of sale. When the car changes hands, the seller’s tax is cancelled automatically and they get a refund for any full calendar months still remaining. You start a fresh tax period from the 1st of the current month. The old tax doesn’t carry over, even if you’re buying from a family member.2GOV.UK. To keep the refund side working, the seller needs to notify DVLA of the sale using the yellow V5C/3 section of the logbook. That triggers the cancellation and their refund. It has no effect on your obligation to tax the car before driving it.

What You Need Before You Can Tax It

Three things have to be in place on the day:

  • The V5C/2 new keeper supplement. This is the green slip torn from the logbook by the seller and handed to you. Its 12-digit reference number lets you tax the vehicle before the updated V5C arrives in your name, which takes several weeks.3GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle Without a Vehicle Tax Reminder
  • A valid MOT, if the car is over three years old. The tax system checks this electronically, so no paper certificate is needed online.4GOV.UK. Getting an MOT – Vehicles That Do Not Need an MOT
  • Active insurance showing on the Motor Insurance Database. Insurers usually update the database within a few days of the policy starting but it can occasionally take up to seven days. If your insurance isn’t on the database, the tax application will be rejected.5Motor Insurers’ Bureau. Check Your Vehicle Insurance Status

A dealer should hand you the V5C/2 at the point of sale. In a private sale, the seller tears it from the logbook and gives it to you directly. Without that green slip you can’t tax the car online or by phone, and you’d have to wait for the full V5C in your name. Private sales trip up here more often than you’d expect — sellers forget the green slip, and the buyer is stuck with an untaxable car.

How to Tax the Car on the Day

Three routes, same legal result:

  • Online at the GOV.UK vehicle tax service. Enter the 12-digit reference from the V5C/2 and you’re done in a few minutes with immediate confirmation.6GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle
  • By phone on 0300 123 4321, open 24 hours. You can’t set up a Direct Debit over the phone, so you’d need to pay upfront for the full period.
  • At a Post Office branch that handles vehicle tax. Take the V5C/2 and either payment or bank details for Direct Debit. If the car needs an MOT you may be asked to show evidence of it, such as a screenshot of the MOT history.6GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle

In Northern Ireland, the Post Office route also requires a paper insurance certificate or cover note and the original MOT test certificate.

Online is the fastest and the one most buyers use on the day of purchase. Confirmation comes back immediately and you can drive off legally.

What It Will Cost

For most cars registered on or after 1 April 2017, the standard annual rate from April 2026 is £200. This flat rate applies regardless of fuel type or CO2 emissions, including zero-emission vehicles registered on or after 1 April 2025.7GOV.UK. V149 Rates of Vehicle Tax April 2026

Cars with a list price above £40,000 when first registered attract an extra £440 per year on top of the standard rate for five years after the first licence, bringing the total to £640. For zero-emission cars, the threshold is £50,000.7GOV.UK. V149 Rates of Vehicle Tax April 2026

To spread the cost, you can pay by Direct Debit monthly, every six months, or annually. Monthly and six-monthly Direct Debits carry a 5% surcharge. Annual Direct Debit has no surcharge. On the £200 rate, monthly payments bring the yearly total to £210.8GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Direct Debit Payments

Cars registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017 are taxed on a sliding scale by CO2 band. Cars registered before March 2001 are taxed on engine size. The exact figure appears when you enter the vehicle details into the tax service.

If the Car Has Been Declared SORN

A Statutory Off Road Notification doesn’t transfer with the vehicle, so if the previous owner had it declared SORN, you can’t legally drive it on public roads until you’ve taxed and insured it in your name.9GOV.UK. When You Need to Make a SORN

The only exception is driving to a pre-booked MOT appointment. Any other use of a SORN’d vehicle on the road can bring a fine of up to £2,500.9GOV.UK. When You Need to Make a SORN

If the car is over three years old and the MOT has expired, you’ll need to sort that first. Options are limited: book an MOT at a station you can reach without using public roads, use a mobile MOT service, or transport the car on a trailer. Once the MOT is valid, you can tax and insure online and drive home legally. Working this out before handing over money saves a lot of frustration.

Confirming Your Tax Is Live

Use the GOV.UK “Check if a vehicle is taxed” service with the registration number. It shows whether the vehicle is taxed or SORN’d, plus the expiry date.10GOV.UK. Check if a Vehicle Is Taxed

Records usually update instantly, but it can take up to two working days for the database to catch up.10GOV.UK. Check if a Vehicle Is Taxed Keep the confirmation email or Post Office receipt to hand during that window in case you’re stopped by police or flagged by an ANPR camera.

What Happens If You Drive Untaxed

The first step from DVLA is usually an out-of-court settlement letter: a £30 charge plus one and a half times the outstanding tax. If the car had a SORN in force, that becomes £30 plus double the outstanding tax.11Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency. DVLA Enforcement of Vehicle Tax, Registration and Insurance Offences

Ignore the letter and the case goes to magistrates’ court. The penalty is £1,000 or five times the tax due, whichever is greater. For vehicles caught on the road while under SORN, that rises to £2,500 or five times the tax.11Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency. DVLA Enforcement of Vehicle Tax, Registration and Insurance Offences

DVLA can also clamp or impound the vehicle. Release requires paying the outstanding tax plus fees, and if you can’t tax the vehicle before collection, a surety deposit of £160 applies for cars and motorcycles, rising to as much as £700 for other vehicles.
