Phone Calls With Bryan on the Day of the Killings
Four University of Idaho students were stabbed to death in their off-campus home in Moscow, Idaho, in the early hours of November 13, 2022. He first tried Maryann at 6:13 a.m. When she did not pick up, he called his father a minute later, then reached his mother at 6:17 a.m. for a 36-minute conversation. He called her again at 8:03 a.m. for 54 minutes. Investigators found that during that second call he was driving back toward the crime scene. A third call at 9:00 a.m. lasted nine minutes. Barnhart noted that Kohberger communicated almost exclusively with his parents. No texts with friends appeared on his phone. He often called his mother first, then his father, and would text his father asking why his mother was not answering.3People. The Text About Xana Kernodle
Four days later, on November 17, 2022, mother and son were again on the phone for hours. That evening, Maryann texted Bryan a link to a news article describing the injuries sustained by victim Xana Kernodle, including how Kernodle had fought back during the attack.4NewsNation. The FBI Interview the Night of the Arrest
In mid-December 2022, Bryan and his father drove roughly 2,500 miles from Pullman to the family home in Pennsylvania for the holiday break. They were pulled over twice in Indiana but not detained. Her first reaction was to declare, “He’s my angel.” She told agents she would “stake my life” on Bryan’s innocence and said, “What’s going through my mind right now is that this is a really, really bad mistake, what’s going on, like what’s happening here.” She described him as a quiet homebody with a 3.8 GPA who did not drink, party, or have a large social circle. When agents told her the victims had been stabbed with a Ka-Bar knife like one Bryan had bought nine months earlier, Maryann claimed the purchase had been her idea. She said she had suggested he “obtain something to defend himself in the event of a bear attack” while hiking in the western United States. In the same interview, according to the FBI report, she acknowledged she did not actually know whether he had bought anything for that purpose and was unaware of him specifically buying a knife.9Yahoo News. The Family Statement and Witness Lists
On January 1, 2023, the Kohberger family issued a public statement through Monroe County public defender Jason A. LaBar expressing sympathy for the victims’ families and support for Bryan. “As a family, we will love and support our son and brother,” the statement said, adding that they wished to “promote his presumption of innocence rather than judge unknown facts.” The family said they had “fully cooperated with law enforcement agencies.”10FOX 56. Court documents later unsealed by Judge Steven Hippler showed Maryann, Michael, Amanda, and Melissa Kohberger among 56 potential defense witnesses for the mitigation case that would have been presented during a penalty phase to argue against the death penalty.11Oxygen. At Her Son’s Sentencing
Bryan Kohberger pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary under a deal that removed the death penalty. Sentencing took place on July 23, 2025, at the Ada County Courthouse in Boise. Maryann and her daughter Amanda were the only members of Bryan’s family in the courtroom.
