The best class action lawyers in the United States are concentrated in a small group of plaintiffs’ firms that appear repeatedly across the major rankings: Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd, Bernstein Litowitz Berger & Grossmann, Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro, Lieff Cabraser Heimann & Bernstein, Motley Rice, and Cohen Milstein Sellers & Toll. Each has recovered billions for classes, held court-appointed lead counsel roles in the largest cases in its practice area, and been recognized by ISS Securities Class Action Services, The Legal 500, Law360, Chambers USA, Benchmark Litigation, or the National Law Journal. Which of them is best for you depends on the kind of case you have.
How the Rankings Work
No single list is authoritative, so the firms that surface across several methodologies are the most reliable signal.
- ISS Securities Class Action Services ranks firms by the total dollar value of final securities class action settlements where the firm served as lead or co-lead counsel. It is the most objective measure for securities work because it relies on hard settlement data.
- The Legal 500 evaluates firms on lawyer and team quality, billing efficiency, sector knowledge, and client satisfaction measured through Net Promoter Score.
- Law360 Practice Groups of the Year recognizes firms based on the size, complexity, and significance of the year’s litigation.
- The National Law Journal Elite Trial Lawyers honors plaintiffs’ firms in specific practice-area categories, drawing winners from finalist shortlists.
- Chambers USA and Benchmark Litigation rank firms and individual attorneys using peer review, client feedback, and case analysis.

Matching a Firm to Your Case
The legal requirements for a securities fraud case differ sharply from those in a consumer protection or antitrust case, so experience in the specific type of class action matters more than overall firm size.30LawInfo. The Phases of a Class Action Lawsuit A rough guide based on where each firm has repeatedly held lead counsel positions:
- Securities fraud and shareholder rights: Robbins Geller, Bernstein Litowitz, Kessler Topaz, Cohen Milstein, Labaton Keller Sucharow.
- Antitrust: Berger Montague, Hausfeld, Hagens Berman, Grant & Eisenhofer, Cohen Milstein.
- Consumer protection and defective products: Hagens Berman, Lieff Cabraser, Motley Rice.
- Mass torts, opioids, public health: Motley Rice, Lieff Cabraser, Robbins Geller.
- Environmental: Lieff Cabraser, Berger Montague, Motley Rice.
- Employment discrimination and wage suppression: Lieff Cabraser, Cohen Milstein.
- Data privacy and emerging technology: Susman Godfrey, DiCello Levitt, Hausfeld.
Court-appointed leadership roles are the most useful proxy for judicial confidence, since judges select lead counsel after reviewing competing applications. Financial depth also matters. Class actions require years of discovery, expert witnesses, and trial preparation, and only firms that can fund that work see them through.30LawInfo. The Phases of a Class Action Lawsuit
What You’ll Pay
Class action plaintiffs’ firms work on contingency. They advance all litigation costs and collect a fee only if the case succeeds, with the fee taken as a percentage of the total recovery and subject to court approval. An empirical study of 689 common-fund class action cases found the mean fee award was 23 to 24 percent of the class recovery, and the percentage declined as the recovery grew. Courts granted the requested fee in over 70 percent of cases; when they cut the fee, the approved amount averaged 68 percent of what was asked. Litigation costs generally came in below three percent of the recovery on both a mean and median basis.31United States Courts. Attorneys’ Fees in Class Actions
What to Ask Before You Hire
Before signing anything, get clarity on a handful of practical questions. Will the lead attorney personally manage the case, or will it be delegated to associates? What is the specific contingency percentage, and are there any out-of-pocket expenses you could be responsible for? Does the firm have any conflicts of interest that could affect the case? How quickly does the attorney return calls and emails? You should receive a written fee agreement before joining any case.30LawInfo. The Phases of a Class Action Lawsuit If you are already a class member in a certified case, you are represented by the court-appointed lead counsel by default; the questions above matter most when you are choosing counsel to bring a new case or seeking to be named lead plaintiff.
